Teena Ella Becomes Beholder’s First Winner

5th-Santa Anita, $69,000, Msw, 2-12, 3yo, f, 6fT, 1:09.42, fm, 1 1/4 lengths.

TEENA ELLA (f, 3, War Front–Beholder {Ch. 3-year-old Filly, 2x Ch. Older Mare, Ch. 2-year-old Filly, MGISW, $6,156,600}, by Henny Hughes), the third foal out of Beholder, became the champion's first winner while making her turf debut at Santa Anita Sunday. The 2-1 favorite broke alertly and was keen while in tight quarters between rivals battling for the lead in the early strides. She settled back just off the dueling leaders behind fractions of :22.76 and :45.71. Tipped out four wide at the top of the lane, the bay filly closed determinedly to win going away by 1 1/4 lengths. Irish Rose (Irish Surf) was second.

Teena Ella faded to sixth behind subsequent GI Starlet S. and GIII Las Virgenes S. winner Faiza (Girvin) in her six-furlong debut at Del Mar last November. She was most recently third going six furlongs over the main track at Santa Anita Jan. 6. Her victory capped a powerful hour for Spendthrift Farm, which was also represented by Kingsbarns (Uncle Mo), who took his record to a perfect two-for-two with a powerful victory at Tampa Bay Downs.

Nov. 26 Insights: Intriguing Juveniles Debut on All 2yo Card at Churchill

1st-CD, $120K, Msw, 2yo, 7f, 1:00 p.m. EDT

Whisper Hill Farm and Three Chimneys Farm homebred SHOPPER'S REVENGE (Tapit) is one of several well-bred juveniles debuting on this card. The gray is out of three-time Grade I winner and multi-millionaire Stopchargingmaria (Tale of the Cat), whose career highlight was a win in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff. Three Chimneys acquired the mare for $2.8 million at the conclusion of her career at the 2016 FTKNOV sale and re-offered her at that auction two years later carrying a Tapit colt. Mandy Pope went to $4.4 million to take home Stopchargingmaria that day, with Three Chimneys staying in as partner, and went to $1.9 million for her first foal, a Pioneerof the Nile filly now named Stillchargingmaria. The Tapit colt she was carrying, now named Fifty Chevy, brought $825,000 from Japanese interests at KEESEP, but Shopper's Revenge RNA'd for $275,000 the following year.

Al Stall unveils another well-pedigreed colt in Sense You Asked (Street Sense). The $270,000 KEESEP buy is out of a half-sister to MGISW and young sire McKinzie (Street Sense), making his second dam MGSW & MGISP Runway Model (Petionville). TJCIS PPs

Clarkland Farm is represented by the final produce of their blue hen Leslie's Lady (Tricky Creek) in LADY IRENE (Kantharos). A stakes winner in her own right, the 26-year-old golden goose has been the gift that keeps on giving for the Mitchell family. One year after she produced Into Mischief, who went on to be a Grade I winner and now the nation's leading sire, the Mitchells snagged her for $100,000 in foal to Orientate at KEENOV. Her third foal for their operation was Hall of Famer, four-time Eclipse winner, 10-time Grade I winner and earner of over $6.1 million Beholder (Henny Hughes). Her first million-dollar yearling was the Curlin filly Leslie's Harmony, who brought $1.1 million at KEESEP. Her Scat Daddy colt Mendelssohn topped that sale in 2016 when purchased by Coolmore for $3 million. He went on to win the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and is now a successful young sire at Ashford. Leslie's Lady's 2018 American Pharoah filly America's Joy set a record at KEESEP when summoning a whopping $8.2 million from Mandy Pope, but unfortunately she passed away in a training accident before ever making the races. Leslie's Lady 3-year-old filly Marr Time (Not This Time) is a 'TDN Rising Star'.

Chuck Fipke is also represented by a regally bred firster in his homebred Medaglia Forever (Medaglia d'Oro). She is out of GI Breeders' Cup Distaff heroine and champion Forever Unbridled (Unbridled's Song), a four-time top-level scorer and multi-millionaire. Out of GI Kentucky Oaks upsetter Lemons Forever (Lemon Drop Kid), Forever Unbridled is a full-sister to GI Ballerina S. winner Unbridled Forever (Unbridled's Song). TJCIS PPs

OXO Equine's Larry Best went to $1.4 million to acquire the well-related ITZOS (Bolt d'Oro) at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale. He was the third-priced offering at the sale and the most expensive yearling from the first crop of Bolt d'Oro. The bay is out of SW & GSP Lotta Kim (Roar), who is best known for being the dam of Horse of the Year and Hall of Famer Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro), who in turn is the dam of GISW Rachel's Valentina (Bernardini). Itzos is also a half to GSP runners Dolphus (Lookin At Lucky) and Gladys (Medaglia d'Oro).

Rodolphe Brisset saddles an expensive and nicely bred second timer in $850,000 KEESEP buy Talladega (Into Mischief). The WinStar and Siena Farm colorbearer will need to step up after a poor effort first out going shorter than he probably prefers at 5 1/2 furlongs in the slop at Churchill Oct. 30. He enters off back-to-back bullets over synthetic on the Keeneland training track, most recently going a half-mile in :47 4/5 Nov. 18. Girvin’s Faiza Powers To ‘Stardom’ At Del Mar

Sent right to the front after a fast beginning by jockey Flavian Prat, FAIZA (Girvin–Sweet Pistol, by Smart Strike), a $725,000 2-year-old purchase out of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale, hooked up early with Teena Ella (War Front) and outlasted her rival to earn 'TDN Rising Star' status on debut. The pair kept the pace honest, covering the first quarter in :21.92 as Teena Ella, the daughter of four-time champion Beholder, stuck a head in front and the top two pulled several lengths clear of the rest of the field. Though it looked briefly as if Teena Ella might get away, Faiza threatened past the quarter pole with Prat sitting cool while Juan Hernandez was already hard at work on his filly. By the top of the lane, Faiza began to assert her dominance, coming into the final eighth well clear as Teena Ella faded from contention. Lily Poo chased her home from second but was ultimately no match as Faiza hit the wire a wrapped-up 3 1/2 lengths ahead.

The second 'TDN Rising Star' and 16th winner for her freshman sire (by Tale of Ekati), Faiza is out of a half-sister to MGSW and Spendthrift Farm stallion Thousand Words (Pioneerof the Nile) while second dam Pomeroys Pistol, a graded-stakes winner herself, placed in both the GI Prioress S. and the GI Test S. Faiza's yearling half-sister by Cairo Prince recently brought $160,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Beholder, herself out of blue hen Leslie's Lady (Tricky Creek), is a half-sister to the likes of GISW & top-10 freshman sire Mendelssohn (Scat Daddy) as well as GISW & perennial leading sire Into Mischief (Harlan's Holiday). The first of her siblings to make the races as 2-year-old, Teena Ella enters off a pair of back-to-back six-furlong bullets, working from the gate in 1:12 4/5 (½) Oct. 27 and timed in 1:13 2/5 (1/4) Nov. 3.

A $940,000 yearling purchase by David Wilson out of last year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale, Miss Monarch Bay (Into Mischief) is a half-sister to MGSP Sine Wave (Big Brown) and from the family of G1SW Menhoubah (Dixieland Band). She picks up jockey Victor Espinoza for trainer Mike McCarthy.

Following a workman-like breeze in :10, Wudi (Uncle Mo), originally a $117,000 yearling purchase, sold for $725,000 to Donato Lanni out of the OBS Spring Sale. The second foal out of a half-sister to MGSW His Race To Win (Stormy Atlantic) and the dam of GISW El Tormenta (Stormy Atlantic) and GSW Zero Tolerance (Mizzen Mast), this is the family of leading sire Smart Strike (Mr. Prospector), Canadian Horse of the Year Dance Smartly (Danzig) and Canadian champion 2-year-old filly Hello Seattle (Deputy Minister). Wudi races for trainer Bob Baffert in the silks of Baoma Corp.

The other half of the un-coupled Bob Baffert entry, Faiza (Girvin) also brought $725,000 as a 2-year-old out of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale following a breeze in :10.1.
