Beat Ray At Del Mar: Bo Derek’s Latest Role May Be Her Easiest Ever

Bo Derek's autobiography is entitled “Riding Lessons: Everything That Matters in Life I Learned From Horses.” Today at Del Mar, we'll find out whether those lessons included handicapping.

The former commissioner with the California Horse Racing Board and current Del Mar Thoroughbred Club board member is the latest celebrity handicapper getting a chance to take on Paulick Report publisher Ray Paulick in the seaside track's Beat Ray Everyday Beach Boss competition. (To be honest, it hasn't been that tough to Beat Ray — he's hit the skids with his selections against track announcer Larry Collmus last week and Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens in the previous installment.)

Derek, the well-known actress, animal advocate and tireless volunteer for U.S. veterans affairs, joined host/handicapper Michelle Yu and Paulick from her Santa Ynez Valley ranch, where she explained how she plans to wager her mythical $100 in Saturday's final race at Del Mar.

Beat Ray Everyday is an online contest offered every racing day of the Del Mar meet. It's free to play and you can sign up here. Bet a mythical $100 each day on the selected contest race in win, place or show bets on any horse or horses.  At the end of the meet, the player with the highest bankroll from those wagers becomes the “Beach Boss” and wins two VIP tickets to the 2021 Breeders' Cup at Del Mar. Other prizes are available to top finishers in the competition.

Beat Ray At Del Mar: From Announcer’s Booth To Beach Boss?

After calling the winners of the 14 Breeders' Cup world championship races on NBC Sports last weekend, Larry Collmus is back in the announcer's booth for the Bing Crosby season at Del Mar racetrack north of San Diego, Calif.

Collmus has encountered a couple of foggy afternoons at Del Mar, once during this past summer meet and again in the fall, but his calls have been crystal clear and precise. But can his handicapping match those skills?

In this week's Beat Ray “Beach Boss” competition, Collmus and Paulick Report publisher Ray Paulick join handicapper/host Michelle Yu to dissect Saturday's sixth race at Del Mar, a one-mile allowance-optional claiming event that has attracted the razor-sharp 6-year-old Secret Touch and several promising 3-year-olds coming off maiden wins. (Note: Paulick's selection, Divine Armor, has been scratched. His alternate pick is Secret Touch.)

It’s Back: Another Chance To ‘Beat Ray Every Day’ At Del Mar

Hard to believe, but more than a few people managed to “Beat Ray” in Del Mar's summer Beach Boss handicapping contest, so Paulick Report publisher Ray Paulick has been given an opportunity for a rematch during the autumn Bing Crosby Season that gets under way today at the seaside track north of San Diego, Calif.

As before, the contest is free to enter and runs every day during the 15-day meet, which offers live racing on a Friday through Sunday basis and then Thursday through Sunday on Thanksgiving's closing weekend.

All you have to do is bet a mythical $100 each day on the selected contest race in win, place or show bets on any horse or horses. Winner of the contest – the person who builds the largest bankroll at the end of the meet – will receive VIP tickets to the 2021 Breeders' Cup at Del Mar. There are a slew of other prizes as well.

Sign up here before the first contest race, today's Kathryn Crosby Stakes that goes as the seventh race on the opening day program with a first post of 12:30 p.m. Pacific. The Crosby goes off at 3:30 p.m. Pacific. I've already turned in my picks and am wagering $50 to win on two horses: Ellie Arroway and Proud Emma.

Each weekend, Del Mar is lining up a guest handicapper to go head-to-head against Ray in a streaming video segment hosted by handicapper and television analyst Michelle Yu and shown on the track's social media platforms (FacebookTwitterYoutube).

TVG's Todd Schrupp took time out of his busy schedule hosting “Breakfast At the Breeders' Cup” to offer his handicapping insights on the Kathryn Crosby, selecting morning line favorite Cordiality with a $70 win/$30 place wager. Todd also reminded Ray of the drubbing he gave him during a season long head-to-head contest at Del Mar in 2018.

Beat Ray: There Is No ‘I’ In Team Rotondo

It's been a fun couple of months but all good things must end.

This weekend marks the final edition of the Beach Boss competition as the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club meet concludes on the traditional Labor Day finale on Monday.

Today's Beat Ray challenger is Peter Rotondo, the vice president of media and entertainment for the Breeders' Cup, which will be returning to the seaside track for the two-day championships in 2021. More importantly, he's a member of Team Rotondo, whose exploits at the betting windows at various racetracks were chronicled in the cable television reality series “Horseplayers” a few years ago.

I imagine Peter is calling in all favors from his teammates, including his father, Peter Rotondo Sr., the senior member of the team, to sift through Sunday's contest race, the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby, in hopes of finding the winning play. He's not too proud to ask for help, since there is no “I” in Team Rotondo.

Peter will join fellow handicapper Michelle Yu and me on Sunday at 11 a.m. PT on Del Mar's social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube) to handicap this challenging mile and one-eighth turf race that drew a dozen entries (though No. 7, Warren's Showtime, one of three fillies entered against males, has been scratched). Tune in to hear our handicapping strategies and bets for the contest.

Beat Ray Everyday is an online contest offered every racing day of the Del Mar summer meet. Other prizes are available to top finishers and anyone who finishes ahead of me is entered in a drawing for even more prizes.
