Beat Ray At Del Mar: Royalty In The Yellow Ribbon?

TVG's Mike Joyce and I have something in common: as lifelong Chicago Cubs fans, we are used to cheering for losers. That practice comes in handy in horse racing, where favorites only win about one-third of the time. Horses I've selected in the Beat Ray Beach Boss contest are doing much worse; in fact, they appear to be boycotting the Del Mar winner's circle.

Joyce is this week's guest handicapper in the Beat Ray Beach Boss competition, joining host and racing analyst Michelle Yu to look at Saturday's Grade 2 Yellow Ribbon Handicap at the seaside track near San Diego, Calif. It's a very competitive race from top to bottom.

Yu has been red-hot in her analysis, schooling me and Nick Luck in selecting Dr. Schivel last week in the G1 Bing Crosby. It may be good news for me (or bad news for her) that we both agree that Michael Stidham-trained Princess Grace is poised for a minor upset in the Yellow Ribbon after winning her seasonal debut recently at Parx Racing in Pennsylvania.

With Joyce also putting his mythical $100 to win on Princess Grace, we're all going to be victorious or go down on the same sinking ship.

Beat Ray At Del Mar: Do You Believe In Luck?

Saturday's Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar is more than a Grade 1 race or a Win and You're In Breeders' Cup Challenge qualifier for the Sprint division when the world championships come to the seaside racetrack on Nov. 5-6.

The Crosby, named for the crooner who once owned Del Mar racetrack, is this week's Beat Ray Beach Boss event, where a guest handicapper takes his or her turn attempting to out-handicap me with a mythical $100 bankroll. So far, guests Scotty McKeever and Billy Koch have done very well, leaving me 0-for-2 and wondering if I'll ever find a winner.

British broadcaster Nick Luck, currently covering the Tokyo Olympic equestrian events for the BBC but well-known to American viewers of racing telecasts, joins host Michelle Yu and me this week to handicap the Crosby. While I'm relying on morning line favorite C Z Rocket to bail me out, Nick has done his due diligence on some of the other runners and come up with a pair of longshots he is backing.

Beat Ray At Del Mar: Another Feather In Billy Koch’s Cap?

It's only week two of the Beat Ray Everyday Beach Boss competition at Del Mar and I'm going to violate the first rule of holes: namely, when you're in one, stop digging.

I got myself into a hole last weekend when Rushie, the 3-1 third betting choice in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap, ran an uninspiring sixth at the seaside track near San Diego, Calif. My mythical $100 wager ($70 win, $30 show) went up in smoke while my Beach Boss opponent, Scotty McKeever (@ScottyPick6) of Equinedge.com, was all in on the race winner, Express Train, his $100 win wager returning $390.

This week's Beach Boss challenger is Little Red Feather Racing founder Billy Koch, who will attempt to do the unthinkable and defeat me two years in a row.

I'm going to keep digging to get out of that first week hole, so I'm betting against Going Global, who will be gunning for her sixth consecutive win and fifth since being imported into the U.S. and joining Phil D'Amato's barn. She'll be the heavy favorite in a field of 11, draws a favorable inside post position and gets leading rider Flavien Prat.

Beat Ray At Del Mar: Can BCBC Champion Become The New Beach Boss?

Marshall Gramm, fresh off his lucrative victory in the Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge, has been to more than 70 racetracks but has yet to visit Del Mar. Gramm is an economics professor at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., teaching a course, among others, called the Economics of Racetrack Wagering Markets. He's a managing partner of the successful Ten Strike racing stable and a regular on the leaderboard of handicapping tournaments around the country.

But Gramm has an admitted East Coast bias who thinks his home track, Oaklawn Park in Arkansas, has the perfect blend of dirt and turf races (100% dirt).

He'll have to work around those biases as the special guest in this week's final installment of the Beat Ray Beach Boss competition at Del Mar, where Gramm, host/handicapper Michelle Yu and Paulick Report publisher Ray Paulick handicap two turf races on Saturday's blockbuster card: the Grade 2 Seabiscuit Handicap and Grade 1 Hollywood Derby. (Believe it or not, Gramm and Paulick land on the same longshot pick in the Seabiscuit. which is probably not a good omen for Gramm, considering Paulick's recent picks!)

Beat Ray Everyday is an online contest offered every racing day of the Del Mar meet. It's free to play and you can sign up here. Bet a mythical $100 each day on the selected contest race in win, place or show bets on any horse or horses. At the end of the meet, the player with the highest bankroll from those wagers becomes the “Beach Boss” and wins two VIP tickets to the 2021 Breeders' Cup at Del Mar.
