Beat Ray At Del Mar: Hanging Out At Quigley’s Corner

The Beat Ray Everyday Beach Boss contest rolls into closing weekend at Del Mar racetrack in Del Mar, Calif., with analyst and television host Tom Quigley joining Michelle Yu and me to handicap Saturday's Grade 2 Del Mar Derby presented by Caesars SportsBook.

Quigley – whose paddock observations and handicapping tips from Southern California racetracks are a mainstay on Twitter at @Quigleys_Corner – points out that the Del Mar Derby was first run in 1945 as the Quigley Memorial. No, Tom Quigley is not THAT old; the race was named in honor of William A. Quigley, a former college football player and coach who lived in La Jolla, just a few miles south of Del Mar.

Inspired by Santa Anita's opening in December 1934, Quigley brought the idea of a racetrack at Del Mar to singer Bing Crosby in 1936 and was a founder of the seaside oval with Crosby and entertainer Pat O'Brien.

So there's the history of the Del Mar Derby's original name.

More importantly, who will win this year's renewal? Watch the video below to see who Tom, Michelle and I like in the 2021 Derby.

Beat Ray Everyday is a season-long free to play handicapping contest offering as first prize two VIP tickets to the 2021 Breeders' Cup world championships, to be run at Del Mar on Nov. 5-6. Contestants have had the opportunity to wager a mythical $100 in win, place and show bets on a selected race each day of the meet, and the winner will be the person who has the highest bankroll after Monday's closing day. Here are the current standings.

Beach Boss will be back for the Bing Crosby meeting that opens on Nov. 3 and runs through Nov. 28. Details will be available here.

Beat Ray At Del Mar: For Joaquin Jaime, It All Began At The Fair

Joaquin Jaime is a living example of why small tracks matter.

The TVG host, analyst and reporter was fascinated by horse racing when his family first took him to the Big Fresno Fair on the Northern California fair circuit as a child. It wasn't long before Jaime latched onto an uncle who taught him to read Daily Racing Form past performances and explain how pari-mutuel wagering worked.

Attending Saint Mary's College of California brought him closer to San Francisco and the Bay Area tracks of Golden Gate Fields, Bay Meadows and Pleasanton, and his first job out of college was as a researcher for TVG. He's been with the racing network now for 15 years.

Jaime is this week's guest handicapper in the Beat Ray Everyday Beach Boss competition, focusing on Saturday's Grade 2 Pat O'Brien Stakes at Del Mar – a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series Win and You're In event for the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. While we both have respect for the two Pat O'Brien favorites, C Z Rocket and Flagstaff, each of us went in a different direction.

Beat Ray Everyday is a season-long online contest that is free to enter and calls for players to wager a mythical $100 each racing day at the seaside track. The player with the biggest bankroll at the end of the competition wins two VIP tickets to this year's Breeders' Cup world championships, to be held at Del Mar Nov. 5-6. It's not too late to enter. More details and registration can be found here.

Beat Ray At Del Mar: Can Bernier Ride The Pacific Classic Wave?

Surf's up for the biggest day of the 2021 summer race meet at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif., with the Grade 1, $1 million TVG Pacific Classic headlining Saturday's 11-race program that includes five graded stakes and a mandatory payout in the 20-cent Rainbow Pick 6 where the Jackpot has grown to nearly $1.9 million.  The Pick 6 begins at approximately 7:34 p.m. ET with the sixth race.

The Pacific Classic, the 10th race on the card with a 9:33 p.m. ET post time, is also Saturday's Beat Ray Everyday Beach Boss contest race, and we've got the host of the insightful The Matt Bernier Show, from the In the Money Media Network, to analyze this year's field. Bernier, who you also may know from NBC Sports racing telecasts, joins host and racing analyst Michelle Yu to try and “Beat Ray” as the weekly Beach Boss guest handicapper. Matt and I land on different horses in the Pacific Classic, while the normally contrarian Michelle likes both of our horses' chances.

Beat Ray Beach Boss Contest is a free-to-enter competition where players wager a mythical $100 each day during the summer meet. When the season ends on Labor Day, the player with the biggest bankroll wins two VIP tickets to the Breeders' Cup. Details and registration can be found here. It's not too late to sign up.

Watch their analysis and see who they put their mythical $100 on in the Pacific Classic.

Beat Ray At Del Mar: Collmus Can Call Winners, But Can He Pick ‘Em?

Track announcer Larry Collmus makes a brief stopover in Del Mar, where he called both the summer and fall meets last year in the absence of Trevor Denman and will return Nov. 5-6 to call this year's Breeders' Cup world championships for NBC Sports.

Collmus didn't come from his New Jersey home to the seaside town just for its world famous fish tacos or Del Mar-garitas. He's doing some work for TVG and was wrangled into being guest handicapper in the latest edition of the Beat Ray Beach Boss Contest, a free-to-enter competition where players wager a mythical $100 each day during the summer meet. When the season ends on Labor Day, the player with the biggest bankroll wins two VIP tickets to the Breeders' Cup. Details and registration can be found here.

Collmus joined TV host and racing analyst Michelle Yu and Paulick in a live stream on Youtube on Friday to analyze Saturday's contest race, the 1 3/8-mile CTT and TOC Stakes on the turf. We won't say who Collmus picked to win this week's race, but suffice to say he's loyal to a Jersey compatriot in the jockeys room.

Watch their analysis and find out who they like in the CTT and TOC Stakes.
