BBA Ireland Buys Txope For €1.2 Million On Behalf Of Yulong At Arqana

Demand for horses-in-training under both codes and breeding stock was at a premium in Deauville, as the Arqana Summer Sale wrapped its two-day stand on Friday. Towering over the proceedings was the €1.2-million purchase Txope (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) (lot 421), who caught the eye of BBA Ireland's Michael Donohoe acting on behalf of Yulong Investments.

The daughter of three-time French listed-placed mare Power of The Moon (Ire) (Acclamation {GB) was bred by Haras Voltaire and consigned by trainer Philippe Decouz. Formerly an Ecurie Griezmann colourbearer, the relative of dual group winner Zinziberine (Zieten) captured the G2 German 1000 Guineas earlier this year. She cost Broadhurst Agency €310,000 when selling in this ring during the 2020 September Yearling Sale.

Donohoe said, “We can't wait to see her run – it is possible that we might send her over for the Del Mar Oaks in California in August but nothing is decided yet, we can't wait to discuss options. She's a racing prospect and a breeding prospect, and she will be a lovely broodmare in Australia.”

 

Txope was not the only filly to join the Yulong Investments fold Friday, as BBA Ireland also snapped up lot 240, the juvenile winner Kesariya (Fr) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) from The Aga Khan Studs, for €150,000, as well as Follow The Rainbow (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}) (lot 316) for just €56,000 from La Riviere. The former is out of the Listed Prix Hampton winner Kerasona (Fr) (Oasis Dream {GB}), who is a half-sister to G3 Prix du Bois victress Keratiya (Fr) (Iron Mask). A daughter of Arch Of Colours (GB) (Monsun {Ger}), Follow The Rainbow is from the same family as G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest winner Signs Of Blessing (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).

“We'll decide on her next steps in the coming weeks,” said Sam Fairgray of Kesariya. “She could stay to be bred in the Northern Hemisphere or come to Australia.

Havana Grey (GB) has gotten off to a bright start with his first juveniles and the Whitsbury Manor Stud resident leads all European first-season sires by winners with 20. One of those, the Group 3-placed Havana Angel (Ire) (lot 471), was offered by Amy Murphy and proved popular on Friday. Out of the winning Claramara (Ire) (Epaulette {Aus}), who is a half-sister to listed winner Sweet Cecily (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), the grey hammered to Narvick International Inc. for €320,000. A €10,000 Goffs November foal turned €20,000 Goffs Sportsman's Sale yearling, Havana Angel is a member of the same family as GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity S. and GI Toyota Blue Grass S. hero Brody's Cause (Giant's Causeway).

“She'll come back to California,” said Emmanuel de Seroux of Narvick International. “I've bought her for Marsha Naify. I saw her at Chantilly and was impressed by her race. She also ran very well at Dieppe just beforehand. We think she has a lot of talent. The choice of trainer is up to her owner but there is a big chance that it will be Leonard Powell.”

In foal to Victor Ludorum (GB), Lyra Star (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) (lot 247) was the priciest broodmare on Friday, with MAB Agency signing for the 4-year-old at €135,000. Her dam, the G3 Prix de Psyche third Light The Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), is a half-sister to standout sire and Classic winner Lope de Vega (Ire) (Shamardal), as well as three other black-type winners.

 

Not to be outdone by their Flat brethren, jumps trainers were also out in force during the second session and Willie Mullins, buying with Harold Kirk and Pierre Boulard, shelled out €360,000 for the gelded Spanish Harlem (Fr) (Spanish Moon) (lot 493) from Gabriel Leenders. A winner of his only start at Auteuil, the 4-year-old's dam is a half-sister to Grade 2 chase winner Roi des Francs (Fr) (Poliglote {GB}).

The same buying trio also gave €260,000 for lot 473, the Fastnet Rock (Aus) gelding Absurde (Fr), who was multiple stakes-placed from Wertheimer & Free; and €210,000 for Nicolas Clement representative Daddy Long Legs (Fr) (Almanzor {Fr}) (lot 443), who was placed from his only start to date.

“We've bought him [Absurde] for clients of Willie Mullins that like dual-purpose horses that can go over jumps or over long distances on the flat, and Absurde really fits this profile,” explained Pierre Boulard.

 

Tom Malone and Paul Nichols put up €255,000 for lot 444, the Camelot (GB) gelding Afadil (Fr). Consigned by The Aga Khan Studs, the bay has a win and a placed effort from three starts. His dam is a half-sister to the stakes winner Ashiyla (Fr) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}).

Mombasa (Fr) (Martaline {GB}) (lot 500) and Zertakt (Fr) (Walzertakt {Ger}) (lot 502) were both snapped up by Guy Petite for €250,000 and €195,000, respectively. Undefeated over obstacles, Mombasa was consigned by Francois Nicolle. His granddam is the listed winner Monika (Fr) (Dernier Empereur), responsible for three black-type winners, among them G1 Prix Renaud du Vivier winner Moises Has (Fr) (Martaline {GB}). Thrice a winner over fences, the Lageneste & Macaire-consigned Zertakt last won an Auteuil 3600-metre race on June 16.

At the close of trade, 212 sold from 235 offered for a gross of €7,563,300. The average rose to €35,676 (+70.4%) and the median also ticked up to €11,000 (+57%). Overall, 380 horses found new homes for a clearance rate of 86.4%. Grossing €13,091,300, the average over two days was €34,451 (+65.3%), while the median was €16,000 (+60%).

Eric Hoyeau, Chairman of Arqana and Freddy Powell, Executive Director, commented following the sale, “The figures speak for themselves, we have just experienced an outstanding sale. We are obviously grateful to our vendors without whom this would not have been possible and to our buyers who stayed to the end. The percentage of horses sold is a testament to the strong market in all segments over the two days of the sale and the international demand. We are now looking forward to August!”

Galileo’s Magical Lagoon Fights For Ribblesdale Glory

Adding to the remarkable diversity of the Platinum Jubilee Royal Ascot, Jessie Harrington became the 16th trainer to celebrate success from 17 races run by the time Yuesheng Zhang's Magical Lagoon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) had prevailed in Thursday's G2 Ribblesdale S. Freshened for this following her second in Navan's Listed Salsabil S. over a mile and a quarter Apr. 23, the 11-4 second favourite tracked the pace in a distant third early and worked her way to the lead two out before Sea Silk Road (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) emerged on her left. That 15-8 market-leader gained a slight advantage soon after, but as she veered away from Tom Marquand's whip Magical Lagoon reached into her reserves for Shane Foley and ultimately outstayed her chief rival in the last 50 yards. At the line, there was half a length between the race's two most progressive fillies, with 2 3/4 lengths back to History (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in third.

It was a first Royal winner for Foley, who said, “This filly responds really well for pressure. The day she won at the Curragh, she was the same. She really fights for you and digs deep. The pace was on and she wasn't travelling as nicely as I thought, but I was happy enough because this filly does not do a lot when she gets there. She stays very well and only goes through the motions.”

Sent off as favourite when introduced over a mile at Naas in August, Magical Lagoon was only fourth there but Harrington opted to pitch the bay into The Curragh's G3 Flame of Tara S. later that month and she duly obliged before finishing seventh behind Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), Prosperous Voyage (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}) in the G1 Fillies' Mile at Newmarket in October. Posting a respectable comeback effort in a decent renewal of the Salsabil, she had been kept back for this meeting and rewarded all that patience with a gritty performance to deny the Haggas filly at the venue at which her illustrious half-brother Novellist (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}) dominated the 2013 King George.

“I always knew that if she got into a battle, she'd be really tough,” Harrington said. “She's a beautiful, powerful filly and she loves that quick ground. She's very easy to train–she has a lovely temperament and is very relaxed about life. The plan was to come here and then go to the Irish Oaks. She's a proper mile and a half filly.”

Haggas said of the runner-up, “She came to win and the other horse outstayed her, that was my take on the race. We thought she'd prefer the ground and she did. It didn't quite look like she is a real true stayer to me, but maybe the other horse is. The Yorkshire Oaks is quite a tough thing, so I don't think that will be on the agenda, maybe the Lyric Stakes at the track. The [G2] Prix de Malleret on July 14 might be possible.”

Magical Lagoon is the last known foal out of the G3 Preis der Winterkonigin winner Night Lagoon (Ger) (Lagunas {GB}), whose claim to fame came in the producing of the aforementioned Novellist who also took the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, G1 Grosser Preis von Baden and G1 Gran Premio del Jockey Club as well as this track's midsummer jewel. Her other black-type performers include the G3 Preis der Sparkassen Finanzgruppe runner-up Nuntius (Ger) (Dalakhani {Ire}), while she is kin to the G1 Deutsches Derby runner-up Night Tango (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}). This is also the family of the G1 Preis der Diana heroine Novelle (Ger) (Northfields).

Group 1 Producer Cabaret to Visit Siyouni in 2022

Two-time Group 1 producer Cabaret (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}-Witch of Fife, by Lear Fan), who is due to foal a colt by Kingman (GB) this month, will visit Siyouni (Fr) later this year, it has been confirmed to the TDN. Currently boarding at the Aga Khan Studs in France, the dam of Classic winners and young sires Magna Grecia (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) was purchased by BBA Ireland's Adrian Nicoll for 600,000gns out of the 2011 Tattersalls December Mares Sale on behalf of Bob Scarborough.

A winner of the G3 Silver Flash S. herself, Cabaret's first Classic-winning son, the 360,000gns 2016 Tattersalls December Foal Sale purchase Magna Grecia, won the G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy at two and progressed to take the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas in 2019. A resident of Coolmore Stud in Ireland, the bay's first juveniles will race in 2022.

Joining his older half-brother at Coolmore this term is the Cartier Horse of the Year St Mark's Basilica. The top-rated colt in Europe in 2020 after winning the G1 Darley Dewhurst S. and running third in the G1 National S., the bay rattled off four more Group 1 wins-the French 2000 Guineas, Qatar Prix du Jockey Club, Coral-Eclipse and Irish Champion S. last year. He was purchased by MV Magnier for 1.3 million gns out of the 2019 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

Her latest offspring are the placed 3-year-old colt Paris Lights (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) and a yearling colt by Kingman, who have both been retained by Scarborough.

Fastnet Foal The Star of Arqana

A colt foal by Fastnet Rock (Aus) (lot 675) starred at Deauville as trade wound down a notch during the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale on Monday. Consigned by Haras de Castillon, who had also offered eventual €2.5-million buy and Group 1 winner Grand Glory (GB) (Olympic Glory {Ire}), the bay is out of the winning Purple Magic (GB) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}). He was purchased by Benoit Jeffroy on behalf of Manister House Stud for €60,000.

Besides the top lot, race fillies and broodmares were the most sought after, especially those in foal to promising young sire Zarak (Fr). Zarak already has a pair of Group 1-placed horses and two black-type winners to his credit. One of the former, G1 Criterium International runner-up Purplepay (Fr) brought €2 million during Saturday's session.

Haras de Cercy's Anjella (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) (lot 782), sold in foal to the son of Dubawi (Ire), made €45,000 from Jeffroy's Ecurie Castillon Bloodstock on behalf of Magic Dream. A full-sister to German listed heroine Ambria (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), the chestnut 15-year-old has produced Stable Genius (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), who ran third in the G3 Prix la Force. This is also the family of G1 Preis der Diana heroine Amarette (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}).

Joining Anjella at €45,000 is the 3-year-old Siyouni (Fr) filly Dariyla (Fr) from His Highness The Aga Khan's Studs. Also in foal to the Aga Khan's Zarak, lot 832 caught the eye of BBA Ireland. She is a descendant of French champion G1 Prix de Diane victress Daryaba (Ire) (Night Shift), who also landed the G1 Prix Vermeille.

Yet another carrying to the Haras de Bonneval resident, Seemingly (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) hammered at €36,000 to Guy Pariente. From the Haras du Quesnay draft, lot 658 is out of Listed Prix Vulcain heroine Oh Beautiful (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and is from the same family as outstanding bluehen Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}).

Haras du Buff sent Geneva Spur (Distorted Humor) (lot 644), in foal to first-year covering sire Persian King (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), through the ring and the 5-year-old was purchased by Six of Us for €42,000. Group winners Silk and Scarlet (GB) (Sadler's Wells) and Danger Over (GB) (Warning {GB}) are full- and half-sisters to her dam, My Dark Rosaleen (GB) (Sadler's Wells). Silk and Scarlet foaled subsequent Group 1 winners Eishin Apollon (Giant's Causeway) (Japan), Master of Hounds (Kingmambo) (Dubai) and Minorett (Smart Strike) (United States).

The Aga Khan's Studs' Deriyana (Fr) (Oasis Dream {GB}) (lot 835) was knocked down to Crispin de Moubray for €36,000 near the end of Monday's session. Although unraced, the 3-year-old is well-bred, being a daughter of the dual listed-placed Deremah (More Than Ready), herself a half-sister to French listed winner Dariyma (Fr) (City Zip), who would also place third in the G2 Prix Dollar. Under the group-placed third dam is the 2006 G1 Prix du Jockey Club winner Darsi (Fr) (Polish Precedent).

At the close of business on Monday, the gross was well up on 2020's at €2,119,500 for 205 sold from 276 offered (74.3%), from an admittedly bigger catalogue. The average and median were slightly off the 2020 marks as well at €10,339 and €7,000, respectively.

The fourth and final session of the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale begins at 11 a.m. local time on Tuesday.
