Guiliani’s Tunnes Bounds To Classic Glory At Dortmund

Holger Renz's accidental purchase Tunnes (Ger) (Guiliani {Ire}–Tijuana {Ger), by Toylsome {GB}), a half-brother to G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe hero Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) who was acquired as the result of an online oversight, brought the curtain down on his juvenile campaign with a win in Krefeld's Nov. 14 G3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen. Having passed on his G1 Deutsches Derby engagement this term, he made a successful comeback in a Baden-Baden conditions heat at the end of last month and continued his winning streak with a wide-margin domination of Sunday's G3 Racebets 138th Deutsches St Leger at Dortmund, providing his owner with a second straight renewal of the 14-furlong Classic. The 13-10 favourite fought for his head through the initial stages and was allowed to stride on in front after passing the judge first time. Maintaining control in testing conditions thereafter and lobbing along for the most part, he had all rivals under pressure off the home turn and romped further clear under urging once shaken up approaching the quarter-mile marker to rout 37-1 outsider Sir Filip (Ger) (Ito {Ger}) by eight lengths, himself 3 1/2 lengths ahead of the winner's stablemate Nerium (Ire) (Camelot {GB}).

“I didn't really want to make all over such a long trip, but I did not want to take the risk of him pulling hard either, so it worked out well,” said winning jockey Bauyrzhan Murzabayev after claiming his first Deutsches St Leger. Trainer Peter Schiergen added, “The way he won was really quite impressive and he is a true and excellent stayer. We will now run in the Group 1 event at Munich [Nov. 6 G1 Grosser Preis von Bayern] and maybe once before that at ParisLongchamp on the [Oct. 16 G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris] weekend following the Arc meeting.”

Tunnes, one of two pattern-race winners for his sire, is the fourth of seven foals and one of two winners out of a half-sister to four stakes performers headed by G2 Diana-Trial victrix Tusked Wings (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}), G2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil third Titurel (Ger) (Dr Fong) and last year's G3 St Leger Italiano runner-up Tangut (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}). The April-foaled chestnut, full to a weanling filly, is a half to the aforementioned Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}), the hitherto unraced 2-year-old filly Tiara Hilleshage (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and a yearling colt by Adlerflug (Ger). His third dam, Listed Prix Occitanie runner-up Turbaine (Trempolino), produced Guiliani's sire Tertullian (Miswaki) which gives Tunnes a 3×3 inbreeding to Turbaine, herself a half-sister to G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe-winning blue hen Urban Sea (Miswaki).

Torquator Tasso’s Half-Brother Back With A Bang

Off the track since winning the G3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen at Krefeld in November, Holger Renz's Tunnes (Ger) (Guiliani {Ire}) who is a half-brother to the internationally-renowned G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe , G1 Grosser Preis von Baden and G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin hero Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) stormed back onto the scene at Baden-Baden on Wednesday. Confidently-backed into 9-10 favouritism for the Preis der BBAG-Jährlingsauktion, the Peter Schiergen-trained chestnut was full of running in the hands of Bauyrzhan Murzabayev throughout the early stages in a share of third. Moved forward to the stand's rail to take control inside the final two furlongs, he stayed on powerfully from there to score by six lengths from Lobelie (GB) (Adlerflug {Ger}).

Camelot’s Sammarco Prevails In Deutsches Derby Thriller

Hamburg's new starting stalls, wider than before, were the reason for a near 30-minute delay to Sunday's G1 IDEE 153rd Deutsches Derby and course technicians worked furiously on making necessary adjustments to the running rail so that they would fit the track. In the €650,000 contest itself, it was a matter of millimetres at the finish too as Gestut Park Wiedingen's G2 Union-Rennen victor Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB) denied the Markus Klug-trained duo Schwarzer Peter (Ger) (Neatico {Ger}) and So Moonstruck (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) in a thrilling conclusion to Germany's seasonal highlight.

Sammarco opened up with a neck defeat of subsequent sales-race scorer Alaska Tiger (Ire) (Maxios {GB}) when graduating over 7 1/2 furlongs in his Oct. 31 debut at Halle, his lone juvenile start, and returned to run second behind the reopposing Lavello (Ire) (Zarak {Fr}) in Munich's 10-furlong May 1 G3 Bavarian Classic on seasonal debut. He lined up for this date with destiny coming back off a narrow defeat of So Moonstruck upped to 11 furlongs in Cologne's June 6 G2 Union-Rennen, Germany's premier trial for this race, and was sharp from the two box to race third going by the judge first time. Comfortable there until shuffled back when caught in a pocket off the home turn, the 63-10 chance made rapid headway once in the clear to launch his bid passing the furlong marker and was driven out to prevail in a blanket finish. The winning margins were a short head and the same back to Schwarzer Peter and So Moonstruck.

“I am overwhelmed and can hardly speak at the moment,” said rider Bauyrzhan Murzabayev after claiming a first success in the contest. “I am so proud of this horse. We had the perfect race, right from the start, although the pace could have been a bit stronger. I have to be very thankful that Jozef Bojko [aboard Maraseem] allowed some room soon after entering the straight. That helped enormously as I was able to find a free passage on the inside.”

Contributing to a list of notable firsts, Gestut Park Wiedingen's Baron Helmut von Finck added, “We have been a breeding operation for 35 years now and this is a lifetime dream come true. It is absolutely awesome.”

Trainer Peter Schiergen took his tally in the feature to six and said, “Everything went smoothly and exactly as we had planned. Bauyrzhan gave Sammarco a great ride and really earned his first Group 1 and Derby victory. It was only Sammarco's fourth start, he has won two Group races now and was Group-placed before. I am quite positive that he is a true Group 1 horse in the making.”

Sammarco, who becomes the 10th Group 1 winner for his sire, is the first of three foals produced by Listed Winterkonigin-Trial placegetter Saloon Sold (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), herself a granddaughter of Listed Baden-Baden Cup victrix Salonblue (Ire) (Bluebird). The latter's progeny list includes Listed Melbourne Cup Day Plate victor Salon Soldier (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), GSP Listed Junioren-Preis victrix Salonlove (Ger) (Lawman {Fr}) and Listed Premio Tadolina winner Monblue (GB) (Monsun {Ger}). She is also the second dam of Listed Preis der Baden-Badener Hotellerie & Gastronomie winner Serena (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}). Salonblue is also kin to G3 Curragh Cup victor Peppertree Lane (Ire) (Peintre Celebre) and stakes-winning G3 Preis der Deutschen Einheit second Salonhonor (Ger) (Highest Honor {Fr}). Another of Salonblue's siblings, Salontasche (Ger) (Dashing Blade {GB}), has four stakes performers to her credit headed by multiple stakes-winning G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) runner-up Sarandia (Ger) (Dansili {GB}) and G3 Bavarian Classic victor Saphir (Ger) (Black Sam Bellamy {Ire}). Sammarco's fourth dam is G2 German 1000 Guineas third Salonrolle (Ire) (Tirol {Ire}). Saloon Sold has the hitherto unraced 2-year-old filly Salon Starlet (Ger) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) and a yearling colt by Areion (Ger) to come.

Camelot’s Sammarco Prevails in G2 Union-Rennen Thriller

Gestut Park Wiedingen's homebred 3-year-old colt Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB}–Saloon Sold {Ger}, by Soldier Hollow {GB}) outpointed subsequent sales-race winner Alaska Tiger (Ire) (Maxios {GB}) by a neck when annexing his Oct. 30 debut over 7 1/2 furlongs at Halle in his lone juvenile start and came back this term to finish second behind subsequent G2 Prix Hocquart third Lavello (Ire) (Zarak {Fr}) in Munich's May 1 G3 Bavarian Classic last time. The April-foaled bay enjoyed considerable support as the 14-5 second favourite for Monday's G2 Sparkasse KolnBonn – 187th Union-Rennen, Germany's premier trial for next month's G1 Deutsches Derby, and delivered on earlier promise to earn a tilt at that Classic with a narrow victory in the Weidenpescher venue's feature. The eventual winner was reined back after a sharp getaway and tracked a solid tempo in third as Bavarian Classic third and fourth Maraseem (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}) and So Moonstruck (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) raced up ahead along the backstraight. Bustled along as 17-10 pick So Moonstruck was sent to the front approaching the final quarter mile, he made continued headway to join that rival entering the final furlong and stayed on in game fashion to prevail by a head in a head-bobbing finish, with the duo six lengths clear of the remainder.

“Sammarco may only be small in stature, but he is all heart,” insisted winning rider Bauyrzhan Murzabayev. “The pace was good for him, which allowed him to gallop freely, so I had a good feeling all the way around.” Winning trainer Peter Schiergen added, “We were hoping he might be placed in the first three, but he won and that's even better. There's a good four-plus weeks to the [G1 Deutsches] Derby, so we have enough time to get him ready for the big day.”

Sammarco, who becomes the 30th pattern-race winner for his sire (by Montjeu {Ire}), is the first of three foals produced by Listed Winterkonigin-Trial third Saloon Sold (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), herself a granddaughter of Listed Baden-Baden Cup victrix Salonblue (Ire) (Bluebird).
