Frankel’s Raclette Edges Ahead In Thrilling Malleret

Fresh off a confidence-boosting triumph in last month's Listed Prix Melisande at ParisLongchamp, Juddmonte's homebred 3-year-old filly Raclette (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Emollient, by Empire Maker) continued her resurgence with a narrow victory, back at the Bois de Boulogne venue, in Thursday's G2 Prix de Malleret (Prix Le Bonbon) to set the stakes action rolling on Bastille Day. The April-foaled bay debuted with a 'TDN Rising Star' display at Deauville last August, closing her juvenile campaign with another win at Chantilly in September, but was off the board in her first two starts this term. She ran eighth in April's G3 Prix de la Grotte and fourth in May's Listed Prix Finlande, regaining her winning thread last time, and was usurped in the betting market as the holiday crowd marked G3 Prix de Royaumont victrix Baiykara (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) as the 4-5 pick. The eventual winner found a smooth rhythm stalking the tempo in second after the initial exchanges of the 12-furlong contest. Nudged along to challenge passing the quarter-mile marker, Raclette gained a slender advantage entering the final furlong and was ridden out to bravely hold the challenges on both sides for a career high. At the line, she was a head too good for the fast-closing Listed Prix de Thiberville winner Lastotchka (Fr) (Myboycharlie {Ire}), with Baiykara contributing to a thriller and finishing a short neck adrift in third.

“The Family will be delighted with this result,” commented Juddmonte's on-course representative after the win elevated the old guard of Andre Fabre and Olivier Peslier to a combined tally of 16 in the contest, Fabre extending his record haul to a round 10 and Peslier collecting a sixth edition. “Raclette is a smart filly and we have to congratulate Andre Fabre for the fantastic job he has done with this filly. Ever since she ran that first day, he always said the further she went the better she would be and all has gone as he predicted. We will see how she comes out of the race and Mr Fabre will discuss the future with the Family and [racing manager] Barry Mahon. There are plenty of opportunities for her both in France and abroad.”

Pedigree Notes

The best foal of her four-time Grade I-winning dam Emollient, Raclette is a full-sister to the stakes-placed Licence (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and a half-sister to War Front filly Peace Charter (GB), who was second in the G3 Juvenile Fillies Sprint S. at Naas and third in the G2 Balanchine S. The 'TDN Rising Star's juvenile full-sister has been named Ardent and has yet to race. Emollient was barren to Quality Road last year and her 2022 Into Mischief foal died. She returned to Claiborne sire War Front this spring.

The Classic-placed Hofburg (Tapit) is under the second dam, while the third dam, Glia (A.P. Indy), is a daughter of the outstanding blue hen Coup de Genie (Mr. Prospector). Her black-type descendants are legion, with Group 1 winners Denebola (Storm Cat), Bago (Fr) (Nashwan) and Maxios (GB) part of her brood. The last two both found places at stud and currently make their homes in Japan and Ireland, respectively.

Onesto Primed For The Grand Prix

He may be diminutive compared to the likes of Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}) or Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), but 'TDN Rising Star' Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) could be about to enter the arena of giants if he can master his five rivals in Thursday's G1 Grand Prix de Paris. Given no chance by the draw before he even exited the stalls for the G1 Prix du Jockey-Club, the Fabrice Chappet-trained chestnut, who races in the silks of Jean-Etienne Dubois, will have no excuses this time with fast ground also in his favour. Able to register a rapid final three furlongs when coming of age in the 10 1/2-furlong G2 Prix Greffulhe at Saint-Cloud on May 8, he also recorded the fastest sectional of the entire field in the June 5 Chantilly Classic only to earn an inauspicious fifth placing coming from so far back. His final three-furlong time of :35.49 between three out and two out on that occasion was the quickest of the line-up on ground that was softer than he prefers, so ParisLongchamp could be in for something special on Thursday evening.

French Duo Command Respect

Perhaps the biggest danger to Onesto are the other two home-trained colts, Al Asayl France's L'Astronome (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Haras De La Perelle and Stephane Wattel's Simca Mille (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}). L'Astronome has vital course form, having won the Prix de Ferrieres conditions race on Apr. 28 and G2 Prix Hocquart May 26, and is certain to appreciate this 12-furlong trip. He is another who is capable of fast closing sectionals and will be a dangerous rival if left alone on the lead. That also applies to the supplemented Simca Mille, who dominated the G3 Prix du Lys over this trip at Chantilly on June 19. Flaxman Stables' G1 Irish Derby runner-up Piz Badile (Ire) (Ulysses {Ire}) is a significant player if this is not too soon after his big effort chasing Westover at The Curragh on June 25, while KHK Racing's June 15 G2 Queen's Vase winner and 'Rising Star' Eldar Eldarov (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and the Nas Syndicate and the O'Callaghans' Prix du Jockey-Club runner-up El Bodegon (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) may find this on the sharp side.

Malleret Match

Alongside the Grand Prix de Paris, the track also stages the 14-furlong G2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil and G2 Prix de Malleret where 'TDN Rising Star' Raclette (GB) is another high-profile opportunity for a Frankel (GB) and the 12-furlong test should not be beyond Juddmonte's homebred based on her success in the Listed Prix Melisande over a mile and a quarter here on June 12. Whether she is good enough to handle The Aga Khan's June 5 G3 Prix de Royaumont winner Baiykara (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) is another matter. Another progressive filly on display on Thursday is Moyglare Stud's Trevaunance (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}), who takes aim at Leopardstown's G3 Green Room Meld S. over nine furlongs having won a decent conditions event at a mile at Limerick June 17.

ParisLongchamp Hosts Fete Nationale Card

France’s Fête Nationale is without its racing centrepiece on Tuesday, with the G1 Grand Prix de Paris moved to September, but there are still three pattern races and a listed race for 2-year-olds for the recalled crowds at ParisLongchamp. Perhaps the most intriguing contest on the fixture is the G2 Prix de Malleret for 3-year-old fillies over 12 furlongs, where Khalid Abdullah’s Bonne Idee (GB) (Frankel  {GB}) bids to extend her winning streak. Looking in need of this trip when beating her subsequent Listed Prix Melisande-winning stablemate Alkandora (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in a 10 1/2-furlong conditions event at Chantilly a month ago, she will be tested by Gerard Augustin-Normand’s Vaucelles (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) who was fourth in the G1 Prix Saint Alary on that same card.

Opening the card is the G3 Prix du Lys, where a potential contender for the aforementioned Grand Prix de Paris surfaces in the unbeaten Magnier/Tabor/Smith representative Measure of Time (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}). Trainer Andre Fabre has won this on 15 occasions and the bay is his sole runner this time, having won with authority over this 12-furlong trip at Clairefontaine June 4. He faces Godolphin’s gelding Volkan Star (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), who beat the subsequent G2 Dante S. winner Thunderous (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) in the Listed Fairway S. over 10 furlongs at Newmarket June 27. “Volkan Star has some very solid form around him now and came out of the Fairway S. well,” Charlie Appleby said. “He has galloped all the way to the line on both his starts this season and the step up to a mile and a half shouldn’t be a problem. A repeat of his last run should make him hard to beat.”

The juveniles get their chance in the seven-furlong Listed Prix Roland de Chambure, with a trio of unbeaten colts headed by the Haras de la Gousserie’s June 19 Chantilly conditions scorer Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) from the Frederic Rossi stable, while the 14-furlong G2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil sees the June 14 G2 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier winner San Huberto (Ire) (Speightstown) bid to defy a three-pound penalty.  Fourth that day, Called To the Bar (Ire) (Henrythenavigator) re-opposes alongside the veteran Holdthasigreen (Fr) (Hold That Tiger) who was uncharacteristically tame effort when 10th in that contest.
