Irad Ortiz Promotion Raises $22,000 for PDJF

Jockeys and Jeans, in conjunction with Uncle Louie G's Italian Ices, an onsite Gulfstream Park vendor, raised over $22,000 for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund Saturday March 13 through sales of the masked Irad Ortiz bobbleheads at the track and online.

Ortiz personally signed hundreds of the bobbleheads there, and Klaravich Stables, whose colors the bobblehead wears, made a substantial donation.

“To say this promotion was a success would be an understatement,” said Jockey and Jeans President Barry Pearl. “Irad Ortiz is not only a champion rider but a first-class guy who truly cares about his fallen brothers and sisters. He spent a lot of time with us preparing for this event. And the entire team at Gulfstream Park really came through for us as they have in the past, and we know they will in the future.”

Jockeys and Jean Committee member Kenny Katz, who owns Uncle Louie G's Italian ices, conceived the idea and worked closely with track staff to make it a success. Last year he also oversaw the Tyler Gaffalione Bobblehead sale at the same track.

“I'm always amazed and truly touched when racing fans everywhere spend their hard-earned money to help disabled former jockeys,” said Katz.

Pearl and committee member Leah Whitsell, along with paraplegic former jockey Roger Blanco, were also on hand. “I want to thank all who helped and especially every one of those many hundreds who purchased a bobblehead,” said Pearl. “We are still getting orders from around the world.”

Jockeys and Jeans was founded in late 2014 by five former jockeys, and the all-volunteer group has since raised over $1.6 million for the PDJF, which makes monthly payments to over 60 former jockeys who suffered career-ending racing injuries.

Jockeys And Jeans: Stallion Season Auction Benefitting PDJF Kicks Off Jan. 29

Jockeys and Jeans will have a new slant for its sixth annual Great American Stallion Season Sale, which benefits the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund. It will be the only Stallion Season Auction that will bring together Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse Stallions in a single sale.

“For breeders and owners of both breeds, this is a true opportunity to show that persons in both the Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horse world will stand for those who can no longer stand for themselves,” said Jockeys and Jeans President, Barry Pearl.

The auction begins on Friday, Jan. 29 at 9:00 a.m. and ends Monday, Feb. 1 at 5 p.m on Starquine.com. A season preview will be available Thursday, Jan. 28. All seasons sold, their buyers and their prices are private. If you wish to donate a season or seasons and sell them privately, they are very welcome.

All seasons are non-guaranteed and donors have the option of including a breed-back the following year if the buyer's mare does not get in foal on first cover. All at Jockeys and Jeans are volunteers and every cent of the selling prices goes to the PDJF. The charity provides a monthly stipend of $1,000 to some 60 former jockeys who suffered catastrophic career ending injuries. At least 40 are either quadra or paraplegics.

“We realize this has been a difficult year for all in racing and beyond, but it is impossible to breed or own a racehorse without being optimistic,” said Pearl. “We assure you, your season donation will, for some of our fallen brothers and sisters, put a roof over their heads and pay the electric bill.”

Founded in late 2014 by five former jockeys, Jockeys and Jeans has raised over $1.5 million for jockeys who underwent career ending racing injuries. In addition to an annual Stallion Season Sale, the group organizes a yearly fundraising event at a separate track. Some 15 Hall of Fame riders are on hand to honor six of their fallen brothers and sisters who also attend.

“We realize there are more requests from worthwhile charities in racing for stallion seasons than can possibly be filled, so we thank all those who donate to ours,” said Pearl. “This sale is the only one in the entire racing industry whose entire proceeds goes to help humans; namely those Jockeys who have given so much of their lives beneath the horses we all know and love. These brave men and women are no longer riding horses but wheelchairs.”

Jockeys & Jeans Fundraiser at Churchill Downs Canceled

Jockeys and Jeans announced the cancellation of the fundraiser for Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund scheduled for Nov. 14 at Churchill Downs.

“It’s sad because the needs of former jockeys who suffered career ending injuries go on, but given the need to battle this deadly disease, it is necessary,” said Jockeys and Jeans President, Barry Pearl.

Added Churchill’s Executive Director of Racing Mike Ziegler, “Due to the nature of Jockey and Jeans and the way it brings people together from all over the country, we want to ensure that it can be held at Churchill Downs when it can be the biggest and best! We are saddened to postpone the 2020 event, but in full agreement with PDJF and Jockey and Jeans’ choice.”

The event typically attracts 15 or more jockey Hall of Fame members who gather to honor the six permanently disabled former jockeys who attend. Jockeys and Jeans was founded in late 2014 by a group of former jockeys, which has raised over $1.5 million for the PDJF through six annual events and several stallion season sales.

The Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund pays a $1,000 monthly stipend to some 60 former jockeys who suffered catastrophic racing injures. Some 40 are either pari or quadriplegics, while some of the others suffered severe brain injuries.
