Jockeys and Jeans Stallion Season Sale Begins Jan. 10

The seventh Jockeys and Jeans Great American Stallion Season Sale to benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund will be previewed on Starquine.com Jan. 9, with bidding beginning at 9 a.m. Jan. 10 and concluding 9 p.m. on Jan. 12. The sale includes both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse stallions based in states including Kentucky, Florida, New York, California, and Texas.

“Sadly, career-ending injuries happen to jockeys in both industries and this is a great example of the two coming together in a meaningful way to provide funding for those whose lives changed forever while participating in horse racing, a sport we all know and love.” said Jockeys and Jeans President Barry Pearl.

The PDJF pays a monthly stipend of $1,000 to 60 riders from both industries who suffered catastrophic career-ending injuries. Two-thirds of them are now quadra or paraplegics.

This is the third year in which Quarter Horse seasons are being sold, solely through the efforts of the retired legendary Quarter Horse Jockey, G.R. Carter. Proceeds from Thoroughbred season sales slightly topped Quarter Horse seasons the first year, but last year Quarter Horse seasons took a slight lead.

“They gave a big part of their lives to a sport that made me and many others very successful,” said Carter. “And all of us owe it to them to give something back.”

Sampson Named Jockeys and Jeans Person of the Year

Randy Sampson, CEO and Chairman of Canterbury Park, has been named Jockeys and Jeans 2022 Person of the Year. Sampson is a member of the Jockeys and Jeans organizing committee and has been helpful in advising it on track relations and fundraising. Canterbury Park, the track he and his family own in Shakopee, MN, hosted the 2018 Jockeys and Jeans Fundraiser, raising $268,000.

Sampson will accept the award at the eighth annual Jockeys and Jeans fundraiser July 2 at Churchill Downs.

“Of course, I am truly honored,” Sampson said. “But there are likely some out there who more deserve the recognition. But it is not about recognition, it's about the opportunity to speak for and help disabled former riders.”

Jockeys and Jeans President, Barry Pearl called Sampson, “a Godsend.”

“Not only have he and the track been major contributors, he is a roll up your sleeves type of guy who not only knows how to get a lot of things done but is willing to spend the time to get them done,” Pearl said.

Jockeys and Jeans, an all-volunteer group founded by five former jockeys, has raised over $2 million for Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund.

Joe Morris Named Jockeys and Jeans Ambassador

Jockeys and Jeans, a volunteer group dedicated to raising funds for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF), has named Caesars Entertainment Inc. Vice President of Racing Joe Morris as an official Jockeys and Jeans Ambassador. In this role, Morris will advocate for wounded jockeys' financial support, make known the inherent dangers of racing, and help in jockey recovery.

“It's hard putting into context what this level of participation means to horse racing's fallen heroes,” said Barry Pearl, President of Jockeys and Jeans. “It's more than a response to a huge human need and desire to make a difference. It's the recognition by leaders of another major corporation that the advocacy of former injured riders is one of the most significant in the entire horse racing industry and of which Morris knows firsthand as one of the most successful executives this sport has produced.”

Morris added, “The importance of the safety and well-being of our human and equine athletes is of the utmost importance. At Caesars, we believe everyone in our industry should be active in financially assisting our fallen riders and we're honored to take a leadership role with Jockeys and Jeans to support the PDJF and our disabled riders.”
