Kingman’s Commissioning Strikes Late For G1 Fillies’ Mile Glory

Isa Salman and Abdulla Al Khalifa's homebred 2-year-old filly Commissioning (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Sovereign Parade {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) backed up a July 30 debut victory at Newmarket's July course with a taking score in last month's G2 Rockfel S. and stepped forward to provide rider Rab Havlin with a first Group 1 triumph in Friday's G1 bet365 Fillies' Mile back at the town's Rowley Mile venue. The 8-13 favourite was alert from the traps and was positioned in a close-up sixth through the early stages. Tanking forward to go second with three furlongs remaining, she was stirred into action at the foot of the hill and quickened in style to take control with 100 yards remaining, en route to a one-length success from long-time leader Novakai (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), herself 4 3/4 lengths clear of 'TDN Rising Star' Bright Diamond (Ire) (El Kabeir) in third.

Commissioning, half to a yearling colt by Fastnet Rock (Aus), is the second of three foals and lone performer produced by a winning full-sister to G1 Irish Derby and G1 St Leger hero Capri (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), G3 Stanerra S.-winning G1 Irish Oaks and G1 British Champions Fillies & Mares third Passion (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and G3 Loughbrown S. victor Cypress Creek (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The April-foaled bay's second dam Dialafara (Fr) (Anabaa), herself a half-sister to G3 Prix de Conde runner-up Diaghan (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}), is a daughter of G2 Prix de Malleret and G3 Prix de la Nonette victrix and G1 Prix Vermeille runner-up Diamilina (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}). Diamilina, in turn, is kin to four black-type performers headed by G3 Prix La Rochette winner and multiple Group 1-placed sire Diamond Green (Fr) (Green Desert).

Frankel Filly Pounces For Princess Royal Triumph

Godolphin's 3-year-old distaffer Eternal Pearl (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Pearly Steph {Fr} {SW-Fr}, by Oasis Dream {GB}) has gone from strength to strength since failing to contend with Sea Silk Road (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in Goodwood's May 20 Listed Height Of Fashion S. and remained upwardly mobile with an impressive tally in Friday's G3 Princess Royal Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai S. at Newmarket.

The July 16 Listed Aphrodite Fillies' S. and Aug. 14 G3 Prix Minerve victrix broke from the gates as the 6-4 favourite and employed patient tactics in rear through the midway point of this 12-furlong launchpad. Sent forward inside the last half-mile, she quickened in style to initiate her pursuit of Peripatetic (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}) approaching the final furlong and bounded beyond that rival on the climb to the line for a 3/4-length success and a career high. Sea Silk Road kept on in the closing stages to finish 3 1/2 lengths further adrift in third.

“She's a typical Frankel, she stays for fun and what we've done is let her develop to allow her to do what she is doing now,” said trainer Charlie Appleby. “She stays well and, when she hit the rising ground, she quickened visibly. It was always our idea to get some more confidence into her and we missed the [Sept. 11 G1] Prix Vermeille to wait for this and then go [G1 British Champions] Fillies & Mares [at Ascot].”

Eternal Pearl is the third of four reported foals and one of two scorers from as many runners produced by Listed Prix des Lilas victrix Pearly Steph, herself a daughter of G3 Dirk Elbers-Preis winner Pearl Banks. Pearl Banks is out of G1 Prix Vermeille heroine Pearly Shells, herself a half-sister to GI Hollywood Turf Cup-winning sire Frenchpark (GB) (Fools Holme). Pearl Banks's trio of black-type winners is completed by G1 Matron S. heroine Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and G3 Grosser Preis der Mehl-Mulhens-Stiftung victrix Lucky Lycra (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}). The April-foaled bay is half to a weanling colt by Belardo (Ire).

Kingman’s TDN Rising Star Nostrum Dominates HQ Feature

Sir Michael Stoute had not won Newmarket's G3 Tattersalls S. since 1994, Annus Mirabilis (Fr) (Warning {GB}) doing the deed back when it was known as the Somerville Tattersall S., and the local elder bridged a 28-year gap after 'TDN Rising Star' Nostrum (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Mirror Lake {GB}, by Dubai Destination) asserted his superiority in taking fashion to frank the impression given on debut in July. Juddmonte's March-foaled bay had delivered a scintillating performance over seven furlongs at Sandown in that only prior outing and accepted a tow in second after a sharp getaway in this black-type bow. Sent forward to dispute the lead from halfway, the 7-4 second choice was shaken up in front passing the quarter-mile marker and kept on powerfully under mild coaxing on the climb to the line to easily tame Listed Chesham S. winner and G2 Vintage S. second Holloway Boy (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}) by 1 1/4 lengths. Godolphin's G2 Superlative S. runner-up and Listed Denford S. scorer Victory Dance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) was unable to land a telling bow from off the pace and finished three lengths further back in third. Rank outsider Abravaggio (Ire) (Caravaggio) made a bold attempt from the front and was outclassed, but not disgraced, once headed and finished 15 lengths adrift of third.

“I thought it was a very warm race, but he did it very nicely first time and was entitled to come and run in a race like that,” said Stoute after notching an overall fourth winner of the race. “We expected a very big run, but for a horse racing for the first time like he was it is always difficult to fathom. It is so far so good and you could only be pleased. I don't know if we will see him again this season. We will take him home and chill him out and relax him and put him back in fast work. It is a difficult time of year, especially for 2-year-olds when the weather turns, so we don't know. I would like to give him one more run [this year].”

Holloway Boy's trainer Karl Burke was not downcast in defeat and commented, “We're delighted with that as he missed eight to 10 days with a dirty scope and missed the [G2] Champagne S. [at Doncaster]. Danny Tudhope said he would be suited by a mile, so we could look at the [Oct. 22 G1] Vertem Futurity Trophy or, beyond that, the Breeders' Cup.”

Nostrum becomes the third black-type scorer produced by the dual stakes-winning G3 Select S. runner-up Mirror Lake (GB) (Dubai Destination), herself a half-sister to the dam of Listed Lanwades Stud S. victrix Hateya (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}). The March-foaled homebred bay is a half-brother to dual Group-winning G1 C F Orr S. second Imaging (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), Listed Heatherlie S. victor Titus (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and a yearling filly by Frankel (GB). Descendants of his third dam Roupala (Vaguely Noble {Ire}) include this term's G1 Saudi Cup hero Emblem Road (Quality Road), multiple Grade I-winning distaffer Ventura (Chester House), dual elite-level winners Harlem (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) and Queen Supreme (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and stakes-winning G1 Prix Royal-Oak runner-up Erudite (GB) (Generous {Ire}).

Kingman’s ‘Rising Star’ Kinross To The Fore On Town Moor

Back in vogue when successful in last month's seven-furlong G2 City of York S. on the Knavesmire, Marc Chan's 'TDN Rising Star' Kinross (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Ceilidh House {GB}, by Selkirk) continued his renaissance with a one-length victory in Sunday's G2 Cazoo Park S. at Doncaster.
