Frankel’s Flight Leader Battles To Noailles Victory In Paris

Juddmonte's 3-year-old colt Flight Leader (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Principal Role, by Empire Maker) was last seen graduating in an Oct. 12 nine-furlong maiden at Chantilly and put his hat into the ring for June's G1 Prix du Jockey Club back there after battling to a game victory on seasonal return in Sunday's G3 Prix Noailles at ParisLongchamp. The eventual winner, who had earlier posted a Sept. 1 debut ninth behind the 'TDN Rising Star' performance of Padishakh (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) at this venue, broke from the outside stall and found cover off the tempo in fifth after the initial strides. Coaxed along passing the quarter-mile marker, the 19-5 chance came under sterner urging entering the final furlong and was driven out in the latter stages to prevail by a short-neck from Harry Way (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) in brave fashion. In a blanket finish, Fabrice Chappet nominee Fortune (Fr) (De Treville {GB}) was a neck adrift in third.

“When this horse first ran Andre Fabre had mentioned him as a potentially very good one, but unfortunately he missed out on debut,” said Juddmonte's on-course representative. “He won well second time out over nine furlongs, proving already that he stays, and he should be better on good ground. He will come on for the run and has made a step forward to the [June 4 G1] Prix du Jockey Club. Andre Fabre will discuss his programme with Barry Mahon and the [Abdullah] family. There are plenty of opportunities and the trainer knows how to handle these situations, so we have no worries.”

Flight Leader, who becomes the 79th pattern-race winner for his sire (by Galileo {Ire}), is the sixth of eight foals and one of four scorers produced by MSW G1 Nassau S. third Principal Role (Empire Maker). The March-foaled bay's dam, herself a daughter of GII La Prevoyante H. and GIII River Cities Budweiser Breeders' Cup S. victrix Interim (GB) (Sadler's Wells), is kin to GI Charles Whittingham Memorial-winning sire Midships (Mizzen Mast), GI San Juan Capistrano Invitational runner-up Staging Post (Pleasant Colony) and to the dam of G1 Grosser Preis von Bayern heroine Temida (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}). Flight Leader is a half-brother to the unraced 2-year-old colt Rickshaw (GB) (Cracksman {GB}) and a weanling filly by Kingman (GB).

Kingman’s Feed The Flame Powers To Rising Stardom In France

ParisLongchamp opened its doors to 2023 and immediately played host to a 'TDN Rising Star' performance when Pascal Bary trainee Feed The Flame (GB) (Kingman {GB}–Knyazhna {Ire}, by Montjeu {Ire}) unleashed a power-packed display to garner Sunday's Prix de Juigne, a 10 1/2-furlong contest for unraced 3-year-old colts and geldings. The eventual winner bided his time and was positioned sixth of the seven runners through the early stages. Sent forward along the false straight to turn for home in third, the 31-10 chance joined the front rank hard on the steel at the quarter-mile marker and powered clear in impressive fashion once shaken up with 300 metres remaining to easily outclass Cocktail Prince (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) by 5 1/2 lengths. Kingman's updated catalogue of 30 Rising Stars also includes the multiple elite-level winners Persian King (Ire) and Palace Pier (GB).

“He had worked well as a 2-year-old, but was unable to run because of some minor problems, which is often the case with immature horses,” explained trainer Pascal Bary. He came around really well lately and I think he will be a very good horse one day.”

Feed The Flame is the sixth of seven foals and fourth scorer out of an unraced half-sister to dual Group 2-placed sire Migwar (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). The April-foaled bay's second dam Katyusha (Kingmambo), herself a daughter of Listed Rose Bowl S. victrix Crystal Crossing (Ire) (Royal Academy), is an unraced full-sister to G1 St Leger-winning sire Rule Of Law. Making Waves: Feb. 4-10

    In this new semi-weekly series, the TDN takes a look at the notable successes of European-based sires in North America. This week's column, Feb. 4-10, is highlighted by the victory of upwardly mobile mare Quattroelle (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) in the GIII Megahertz S. on Saturday.

 

No 'Quat'er Given In Megahertz

Tally-Ho Stud's rising stallion star Mehmas has gone from strength to strength with his progeny, and his freshly minted 5-year-old daughter Quattroelle became his 12th graded/group winner from just three crops to race when running out a half-length winner of Santa Anita's GIII Megahertz S. going a mile over firm turf on Feb. 4 (video).

The winner of the Listed Blue Norther S. as a juvenile in December of 2020, the then-4-year-old mare hit a purple patch of stakes form beginning this past November, running second in the GIII Red Carpet S. at Del Mar behind Bellstreet Bridie (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}), who shares two of the same owners–Red Baron's Barn LLC and Rancho Temescal, LLC –with Quattroelle, who was brought over to the States after just one run in Ireland, a third in a Leopardstown maiden. Third in the GIII Robert J. Frankel S. to subsequent GIII Pegasus World Cup Filly & Mare Turf heroine Queen Goddess (Empire Maker) on New Year's Eve, the Rossenarra Bloodstock-bred was winning for the fourth time in 14 starts in the Megahertz.

Mehmas, a dual Group 2-winning sprinter, has also tasted American stakes success with his progeny in the form of GI Del Mar Oaks victress Going Global (Ire) among others.

On the female side of the pedigree, Quattroelle, who was a €10,000 Tattersalls Ireland September yearling buyback, is the best performer of the placed Heavenly River (Fr), by former star French 3-year-old colt Stormy River (Fr) (Verglas {Ire}). That sire won the G1 Prix Jean Prat, and was placed in the G1 French 2000 Guineas, as well as three other times at the highest level throughout his career. The second foal of her dam, herself a half-sister to stakes winner and G3 Prix du Calvados third Katie's Diamond (Fr) (Turtle Bowl {Ire}), Quattroelle is followed by the placed 4-year-old colt The Ganges (Ire) (Markaz {Ire}), the unraced full-sister to that horse named Heavenly Mark (Ire) (Markaz {Ire}) and a yearling full-brother to Quattroelle.

Heavenly River is bred on the same Stormy River–Anabaa cross as Listed South Beach S. heroine Stormy Victoria (Fr) (Stormy River {Fr}), who placed four times at the graded level in North America. Katie's Diamond is the dam of a graded/group winner in the form of G2 Queen Mary S. winner Dramatised (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}), who was second in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. This is the extended family of G3 Prix Miesque winner Aquatinta (Ger) (Samum {Ger}), the best foal out of Quattroelle's third dam Arpista (Ger) (Chief Singer {Ire}).

Chief Singer, a foal of 1981, proved top class at both six furlongs and a mile at three with victories in the G1 July Cup, G1 Sussex S. and G2 St. James's Palace S., and was also a winner of the G2 Coventry S. at two. Good enough to bring up the exacta in El Gran Senor's G1 2000 Guineas, he sired just two stakes winners, but Quattroelle's great-granddam was not among them, instead taking  third in the Listed Scherping-Rennen at Baden-Baden in 1997

 

'Earl' Brings The Thunder

It was also a first win at the graded level for another Irish-bred later on the Santa Anita Saturday card, as Earl's Rock (Ire) (Fascinating Rock {Ire}), won the GIII Thunder Road S. over a mile on the grass (video).

From the first crop of his G1 Champion S. and G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup-winning sire who stands at Burgage Stud in Ireland, and one of two overall stakes winners, the 5-year-old gelding became Fascinating Rock's first graded winner with his nose victory.

Bred by Newtown Anner Stud, who also bred his sire, the gelding was an €8,000 yearling purchase out of the Goffs Autumn Sale in 2019. His Darley-bred dam, Ajaadat (GB) by dual French Classic hero and top sire Shamardal, won a trio of races in the UK at 1500 metres and a mile and holds a record of six foals, four of racing age, with Earls Rock her second produce. The gelded 4-year-old Tamra's Rock (Ire) (Fascinating Rock {Ire}) is also a winner, as is his year-younger full-brother Cash Or Crypto (Ire). Ajaadat foaled fillies by Camelot (GB) and the winner's sire in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

Out of the unraced Taarkod (Ire) (Singspiel {Ire}) herself a daughter of G1 Nassau S. heroine Zahrat Dubai (GB) (Unfuwain), Ajaadat is a full-sister to G3 International Istanbul Trophy second Rekdhat (Ire). Sharmardal has sired German Group 3 winner and G1 Sun Chariot S./G1Prix Rothschild runner-up Half Light (Ire), as well as two other stakes winners out of Singspiel mares. Himself a Group/Grade 1 winner four times in the UK, Canada, and Japan, Singspiel sired 99 black-type winners (52 group), but has bettered that mark as a broodmare sire, with 111 stakes winners (64 group) led by the young Darley sire Too Darn Hot (GB).

 

Another Graded Success For The 'Prince'

Santa Anita Park was the place to be for Euro-breds last weekend, as Prince Abama (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}), already victorious in the GII Hollywood Turf Cup, beat Masteroffoxhounds (War Front) by a neck over the 1 1/4-mile GIII San Marcos S. on Sunday (video). He was a €29,000 Goffs Sportsman's Yearling Sale purchase by BBA Ireland in 2019.

One of 25 stakes winners and 15 group winners for the recently pensioned Tamayuz, the T. Jones-bred is one of five winners from five to race for his Mr. Greeley dam, who never made it to the races. She is a half-sister to two stakes winners, among them Nymphenburg (San Romano), who was second in the GII Canadian H. His second dam is a winning half-sister to Canadian Champion 3-Year-Old Filly La Lorgnette (Val De l'Orne {Fr}), who took two Canadian Classics including the Queen's Plate, and was also the dam of the high-class three-time Group 1 winner Hawk Wing (Woodman).

 

Expert Eye Filly Graduates At The Fair Grounds

Away from California graded stakes action, Juddmonte stallion Expert Eye (GB), best known for his GI Breeders' Cup Mile upset in 2018, sired his 27th winner from his first crop with Beautifulnavigator (Ire) (video) striking by three-quarters of a length in New Orleans at the Fair Grounds. From just 19 first-crop 3-year-old runners, she is his seventh winner, taking a 1 1/16-mile turf maiden special weight for trainer Ken McPeek, his wife Sherri's Magdalena Racing and Alfred Riccio on Sunday.

A €70,000 Goffs Orby yearling, the Rathbarry Stud and Abbeylands Farm-bred is a half-sister to Tabarrak (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), who won five times at the listed level in England, and was second placed in both the G3 Sovereign S. and G3 John Of Gaunt S., as well as the stakes-placed half-sister The Wagon Wheel (Ire) by Expert Eye's sire Acclamation. Stakes-placed at Warwick,  Bahati has a 2-year-old colt by Kodi Bear (Ire) and produced a filly by Acclamation (GB) in 2022.

Frankel’s Chaldean Downs Rivals In The Dewhurst

The form of last month's G2 Champagne S. received a timely boost when Silver Knott (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) snagged the G3 Emirates Autumn S. earlier on the card and that former contest's winner, Juddmonte's 550,000gns Tattersalls December foal Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Suelita {GB}, by Dutch Art {GB}), continued his impressive winning spree by making virtually all in Saturday's G1 Darley Dewhurst S. at Newmarket, providing trainer Andrew Balding with a first triumph in the seven-furlong Autumn highlight. The May-foaled chestnut had earlier followed up a June 30 debut fifth at Newbury with a July 15 breakthrough back there and registered a first black-type victory in August's G3 Acomb S. at York in his penultimate outing. He recovered from a scrappy departure to lead after the initial strides. Holding sway thereafter, the 5-2 joint-favourite came under pressure when threatened by 'TDN Rising Star' Nostrum (GB) (Kingman {GB}) approaching the quarter-mile marker and, having subdued that rival on the climb, held enough in reserve to withstand the late rattle of G2 Richmond S. victor Royal Scotsman (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) by a head. Nostrum was not unduly punished in the closing stages and finished 2 1/4 lengths back in third, himself five lengths clear of fellow 'TDN Rising Star' Aesop's Fables (Ire) (No Nay Never) in fourth.

“It is the first season I've had runners for Juddmonte and he was the first one in,” the winning trainer explained. “It is a huge privilege to train for them particularly when you get sent horses like him. With the stallions they have access to it is a dream really. We thought he was very good early spring and into the summer, but he got beaten first time out. Since then he has gone on and on. He has actually got less smart at home and has got smarter on the racecourse and that is how you want it really. He is just a dream horse and an absolute star. You wouldn't have been surprised if anyone of four or five of them had won, but the only sadness is to beat Jim and Fitri Hay as they are very good supporters of mine. That is the only slight negative on it as I hate denying them a good win, but apart from that I'm thrilled.”

Reflecting on the winner's performance, Balding added, “I was fairly confident, but less confident with a furlong to go. He had been out in front a long time and Frankie felt he kicked a little earlier than ideal, but it was probably a race-winning move. He is versatile and he didn't have to make it, but it didn't look like there was any obvious pace here. What we didn't want was it to turn into a sprint and for us to be out of our ground. He will be fine and the bigger the field the better off he will be [in the G1 2000 Guineas]. He is all speed on his dam side, being out of a Dutch Art mare, and I'd be surprised if he got further than a mile. I don't know if we run him in a trial first, we will see how he is training in the spring and make a decision from there. I would be comfortable going straight there, but I can't be making that decision at the moment.”

Frankie Dettori, claiming his third Dewhurst after partnering Too Darn Hot in 2018 and St Mark's Basilica in 2020, added, “He fluffed the start, but I was able to get him up there. I thought we had it in the bag when he shot clear, but I think he kind of lost concentration a bit as he was all on his own. Jim [Crowley aboard Royal Scotsman] came late and fast and that caught him by surprise. Luckily for us, the line was there. I was nothing but impressed when I rode him at Doncaster and the first thing I said to Andrew after was to go for the Dewhurst and he obliged. He's a proper Guineas horse for next year and we can dream now.”

Olly Cole, joint-trainer of the runner-up, said, “He broke the track record when he won at Goodwood [in the G2 Richmond]. People have crabbed the race, but you can't crab the race when you break the track record. He might have been unbalanced coming down the hill and it took him a bit of time to get going. He is seriously very good and the [2000] Guineas will be right up his street. To finish like he did today was good. I've been going around the sales telling everyone he was going to win, as I thought he would and he nearly did, and the dream is still alive.”

Chaldean, who becomes the 26th Group 1 winner for his sire (by Galileo {Ire}), is one of five black-type performers produced by a multiple-winning half to G3 Cornwallis S. second Outer Space (GB) (Acclamation {GB}) and to the dam of G2 Lowther S. victrix Living In The Past (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {Ire}). The May-foaled chestnut is kin to G2 Mill Reef S. victor Alkumait (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), Listed Committed S. winner The Broghie Man (GB) (Cityscape {GB}), the dual stakes-placed Get Ahead (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) and Listed Prix Herod third Gloves Lynch (GB) (Mukhadram {GB}). His dam Suelita (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) is a granddaughter of GIII Matchmaker S. victrix Horatia (Ire) (Machiavellian), herself the dam of G3 Pinnacle S. victrix and GI E. P. Taylor S. third Moment In Time (Ire) (Tiger Hill {Ire}). Horatia is kin to dual G2 Lonsdale Cup winner Opinion Poll (Ire) (Halling).
