TDN Rising Star Ylang Ylang Makes All For Impressive Silver Flash Success

Aidan O'Brien trainee Ylang Ylang (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Shambolic {Ire}, by Shamardal), who made all for a 'TDN Rising Star' rosette with an impressive 2 3/4-length debut tally tackling seven furlongs at the Curragh in her only prior start, maintained her perfect record with a carbon-copy performance in Thursday's G3 Jockey Club Of Turkey Silver Flash S. at Leopardstown.

The prohibitively priced 1-4 favourite was slick from the inside gate and seized an early two length advantage in this black-type bow. Untroubled through halfway, she was shaken up with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and kept on powerfully under urging in the closing stages to comfortably hold Vespertillo (Fr) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) by 1 1/2 lengths. She extends O'Brien's record in the seven-furlong contest to an unmatched 13.

“She had a good draw, so obviously Ryan [Moore] used it again, and the next day we'll take our time with her,” the trainer revealed. “She hit the gates the first day she ran and Ryan did the right thing. Today she had the draw and she did the same thing. He said she was probably doing plenty for him in front and he gave her a beautiful ride. We're delighted, Ryan was very happy with her and he said she ran straight through the line. She's a very low mover and he felt that the ground was a little bit deep, but he was very happy with her. Hopefully now it'll be the [G2] Debutante before the [G1] Moyglare and we'll let her sit in and relax. She's very genuine, she tries very hard and wears her heart on her sleeve. Natural is a good way to describe her.”

Westover Powers To Record-Breaking Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud Triumph

Juddmonte's G1 Irish Derby hero Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Mirabilis, by Lear Fan) failed to contend with subsequent G1 Coral-Eclipse runner-up Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in last month's G1 Coronation Cup, but regained the winning thread in emphatic style with a record-breaking performance in Saturday's G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.

Westover raced in a handy third behind Ralph Beckett-trained chaperone Malabu Drive (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who was usurped for the lead by last term's G1 Grosser Preis von Bayern victor Tunnes (Ger) (Guiliani {Ire}), and eased into second when his stablemate faded quickly with a half-mile remaining. Shaken up to seize control from Tunnes in early straight, the 1-2 favourite refused to yield when strongly pressed by Zagrey (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) inside the final quarter-mile and was driven out to double his elite-level tally by two lengths from that rival. The winning time of 2:25.46 lowered Alpinista's race record, set last year, by nearly 3/4-of-a-second.

Westover's journey at the highest level began with an unlucky-in-running third in Epsom's G1 Derby before gaining a measure of compensation at the Curragh. He emptied quickly when facing elders for the first time in Ascot's G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. at the end of July and closed his 2022 campaign with a sixth in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. He faced a stiff task on seasonal return in Meydan's G1 Dubai Sheema Classic, but was no match for galactico Equinox (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) and ran on with gusto after Emily Upjohn's gears had sealed victory at Epsom last time.

“Inevitably there was pressure as it was a long time since he won, over a year, and the longer that goes on the harder it gets,” reflected Beckett. “There was nothing wrong with his two runs this year and he's only had the one blip in the [G1] King George [last year]. He was great today and it was a very fast time. For so long we had a reputation for training long-distance fillies, so it's important to change the dial. We'll enjoy today and see what comes next. This was important.” Looking ahead to targets down the line, the trainer continued, “I think we'll either stay at a mile-and-a-half or even have a conversation about going up in trip. The peloton came to him, but he stretched away in the last half-furlong. We'll certainly consider the [G1] King George [& Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot] and see how he is closer to the time. There will be a bit of a monkey on the shoulder saying is this a good idea after what happened last year, but we'll see. The Arc will be under consideration too and he ran a great race in it last year, but got stuck in the ground [when sixth].”

It was a landmark success for rider Rob Hornby, with it being his first Group 1 in the Juddmonte silks. “Winning a Group 1 in these colours is the stuff of dreams,” he said. “I was brought up watching these colours win prestigious races and to be able to do it at Group 1 level is the highest honour. I'm grateful to everyone who has helped me along the way. Ralph has trained this horse so well from two to three and three to four, so to win a Group 1 at four is so important. These are things you dream of, so when they come true you don't know how to think.” Reflecting on a record-breaking performance, he added, “The pace was really good early on and Dougie [Costello aboard Malabu Drive] was able to keep it honest the whole way. When he dropped the bit he was able to work into it and hit the line strong. This is my third Group 1 for Ralph and fourth overall, but it's nearly a year since my last one and they are so important for a jockey.”

Tatts Book 1 Millionaire Ylang Ylang Powers To TDN Rising Stardom At The Curragh

There was an abundance of pre-race hype surrounding the Aidan O'Brien-trained debutante Ylang Ylang (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Shambolic {Ire}, by Shamardal), who was hammered down to 8-13 favouritism for Friday evening's Kildare House Hotel Irish EBF Fillies Maiden at the Curragh, and she rewarded that faith with a 'TDN Rising Star' display in the seven-furlong test. Relaxed under Ryan Moore during the preliminaries, she was professional on the lead throughout and extended her margin of superiority, keeping on powerfully under mild coaxing, inside the final quarter-mile to easily account for Dollerina (Ire) (Territories {Ire}) by an impressive 2 3/4 lengths. She becomes Frankel's 34th Rising Star and joins a list which includes dual Group 1-winning G3 Hoppings S. runner-up Nashwa (GB).

“She was never away [from home], as she was so babyish, she was working very well and we're delighted with her,” O'Brien said. “It was nice to see her doing that and she's probably going to come on leaps and bounds. Ryan [Moore] gave her one back-hander to get down and stretch and said she was only playing in front. The [G2] Debutante S. should be perfect for her. She's working with the good colts no problem, which is usually a very good sign.”

Frankel And Kingman Available On Southern Hemisphere Time

Juddmonte stallions Frankel (GB) and Kingman (GB) will both be available to cover mares on Southern Hemisphere time, the TDN AusNZ reported on Thursday morning. The former will remain at £125,000 and his 50-mare SH book is already mostly full. The latter's fee will be £40,000.

“I had it confirmed to me only this morning [Wednesday] that there are only two stallions in history who have sired a 2-year-old Group 1 winner in Australia having never stood there,” Shane Horan, Juddmonte's stallion nominations manager, told the publication. “Frankel is one and Kingman is the other, and the fact that they're at the same farm at the same time is phenomenal.”

Besides siring G1 J.J. Atkins S. winner King Colorado (Aus) on the weekend, Kingman was also represented by Group 3 winner Sinawann (Ire) taking an Australian listed event during the same timeframe. Of his 23 runners in Australasia,15 are winners. Besides the aforementioned stakes winners, the son of Invincible Spirit (Ire) also has Group 3 winner Emissary (GB) and the Group 3-placed Tass (Aus).

“From a marketing point of view, his big selling point to an Aussie market is that he was a brilliant miler with a high cruising speed and a killer turn of foot,” Horan said. “He passes that on to his progeny. He is also the highest-rated son of Invincible Spirit, who is, of course, the sire of I Am Invincible (Aus), and I Am Invincible has been a revelation in Australia.

“He typically gets them looking like himself,” Horan added. “He's an elegant stallion. He's lightly made and light on his feet. His progeny tend to race with a high head-carriage and he's passing on that great acceleration. It seems like he's ideally suited to those mares with lots of substance, and he will add in all the quality you could ask for.”

“It's hard to predict what sort of numbers we'll expect for him [Kingman] this September,” he said. “I'll know a lot more by the Tattersalls July Sale up here when many of the Australian breeders and agents will be in attendance.”

Frankel's Australasian stats are no less remarkable. The sire of 121 stakes winners worldwide, the 15-year-old has 16 winners from 40 runners Down Under. All 16 of those winners have struck at stakes level, with his 12 group winners led by Group 1 winners Hungry Heart (Aus), Mirage Dancer (GB), and Converge (Aus). The last-named also won the G1 J.J. Atkins.

“Frankel, physically, is a bull of a stallion,” Horan said. “There's probably a lot of Danehill coming through in him. His mother was a very typical Danehill mare, and he's probably more suited by the elegant type of mare. Kingman is probably less fussy on the size of mare sent, but a mare with substance and plenty of bone is recommended.”

Both stallions will stand to Southern Hemisphere time on Special Live Foal (SLF) terms. The fee is payable 45 days from the last service date (when the mare is confirmed in-foal) and should anything happen to the foal within 48 hours of birth in Australia, a full refund on the service fee will be provided. Juddmonte is also supplying a £10,000 travel allowance for mares travelling up from the Southern Hemisphere, which is useful when it comes to a £40,000) service fee for Kingman.

“Kingman is often overshadowed by Frankel, which is understandable,” Horan said. “Frankel has tied with Danehill as the fastest stallion to 100 worldwide stakes winners in terms of numbers of days taken to achieve it, and in terms of getting to 50 stakes winners by number of days, Frankel was also the fastest, beating Dubawi (Ire) who beat Galileo (Ire). But in the meanwhile, Kingman didn't reach 50 as fast as Frankel, but he was quicker to do it than Dubawi and Galileo. So that gives you a perspective on where this horse sits.”
