Bated Breath’s Makaloun Has Conde Rivals For Lunch

Fresh from victory in last month’s Listed Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l’Elevage going one mile at Deauville, His Highness The Aga Khan’s Makaloun (Fr) (Bated Breath {GB}) was in no mood to relinquish his perfect record and dominated all seven rivals in Monday lunchtime’s G3 Prix de Conde at Chantilly. He had debuted with a June 12 seven-furlong tally at Toulouse and doubled up over the same trip in a July 15 conditions heat at Mont-de-Marsan in his penultimate start. Breaking well to lead after the initial strides of this nine-furlong slog in deep mud, the 11-10 pick was never in danger on the front end and glided clear under mild coaxing inside the final quarter mile to easily outpoint Anasia (GB) (Intello {Ger}) by an impressive five lengths for a first pattern-race score. Kergrist (Fr) (Milanais {Fr}) was best of the rest and an additional four lengths adrift in third.

“This is a nice one, a real nice one,” proclaimed trainer Jean-Claude Rouget. “He has so many qualities and has showed speed earlier, that he stays and that he handles all types of ground. You can also make the running with him or adopt waiting tactics, he is the real deal. Today was very deep and he displayed a lovely fluent action. It’s nice to have a talented juvenile undefeated in four starts and, if all is well, he will have one more run this year in the [G1] Criterium de Saint Cloud.”

Makaloun is the latest of four foals and one of three winners from as many runners out of a dual-winning half-sister to Listed Prix Omnium II victor Markazi (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}). The May-foaled homebred’s fourth dam Mariyada (Diesis {GB}), from the immediate family of G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches heroine Riverqueen (Fr) (Luthier {Fr}), is kin to G3 Prix d’Hedouville winner and G2 Prix Niel runner-up Malakim (Blushing Groom {Fr}) and also the granddam of Listed Fleur de Lys S. victress Mayonga (Ire) (Dr Fong).

Logician Downs Lone Rival In Doncaster Return

Last term’s unbeaten G1 St Leger hero Logician (GB) (Frankel {GB}), under wraps following a bout of peritonitis, maintained his perfect record in Thursday’s 10-furlong Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Conditions S. back at the scene of that Classic triumph in his first start since.

1st-Doncaster, £20,000, Cond, 9-10, 3yo/up, 10f 43yT, 2:10.36, gd.
LOGICIAN (GB) (c, 4, Frankel {GB}–Scuffle {GB} {SP-Eng}, by Daylami {Ire}) was under wraps after a storied case of peritonitis and went postward as the prohibitively priced 1-12 favourite facing just one rival, last year’s G2 Zabeel Mile victress Mythical Magic (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}), in this eagerly awaited return. He stepped into an immediate lead, racing under a firm hold through the early stages, but was headed briefly soon after straightening for home. Nudged back in front approaching the quarter-mile marker, the hitherto undefeated grey turned the contest into an exercise canter thereafter and powered clear following the same stands’ side route as last year before gearing down for an easy seven-length score. “It was a nice, proper stretch and he’s finished very well and comfortable under hands and heels,” said winning trainer John Gosden. “This horse had two months in intensive care and I can have nothing but praise for the veterinarians at the Newmarket Equine Clinic for saving his life, twice, so that he can be here today. It’s been a long road and we’re very pleased to see him back. There’ll be no immediate plans, he’s well entered in the autumn, but I’d like to see how he is in the next 10 days before even thinking about another race. Just to get him back here is extraordinary in itself. We couldn’t be more pleased at this stage, but I don’t want to commit to anything now. We’re on the cusp of the autumn if we want to run again this year, but the horse will tell us. We know a mile-and-a-half is spot-on for him so, next year, he’ll have races like the King George as an absolute target.” One of five winners from as many runners produced by Listed Snowdrop Fillies’ S. third Scuffle (GB) (Daylami {Ire}), Logician is a full-brother to the stakes-winning Collide (GB) and a weanling colt. He is also kin to MGSW GI E.P. Taylor S. runner-up Suffused (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}), Listed October S. placegetter Battlement (GB) (Dansili {GB}), the once-raced 2-year-old filly Monsoon Moon (GB) (Kingman {GB}), who shaped with a deal of promise when third in an Ascot novice heat last week, and a yearling colt by Time Test (GB). Scuffle is herself a daughter of MSW G3 Supreme S. third Tantina (Distant View) and thus a half-sister to G1SW sire Cityscape (GB) (Selkirk) and G2 Temple S. victor and MG1SP sire Bated Breath (GB) (Dansili {GB}). Lifetime Record: Hwt. 3yo-Eng at 14f+ & G1SW-Eng, 6-6-0-0, $656,003. Video, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.

Frankel’s Petricor Earns TDN Rising Stardom in Deauville Debut

Sent postward as the 7-5 favourite for Tuesday’s Prix les Ammonites, a 7 1/2-furlong debutantes’ heat at Deauville, Khalid Abdullah’s Petricor (GB) (Frankel {GB}) did not disappoint and earned ‘TDN Rising Star‘ status with an impressive opening performance at the Normandy venue. The Andre Fabre trainee broke well from an inside gate, but was shuffled back to race in a midfield seventh after occupying a prominet second through the initial strides. Angled outside for an clear passage with 350 metres remaining she quickened to challenge entering the final furlong and kept on powerfully under mild coaxing to easily deny the pacesetting Grace Shelby (Fr) (Shalaa {Ire}) by 1 1/2 lengths nearing the line.

“This filly has been working nicely at home and she confirmed that promise on the track today,” said winning rider Pierre-Charles Boudot. “More rhythm in the race would have helped and I am certain that she will stay in the future.”

Petricor is the first of three foals produced by a winning half-sister to five black-type performers headed by MG1SW sire Brian Boru (GB) (Sadler’s Wells) and MGSW G1 Irish St Leger and GI Breeders’ Cup Turf placegetter Sea Moon (GB) (Beat Hollow {GB). The February-foaled homebred bay is a half-sister to a yearling colt by Lope de Vega (Ire) and a 2020 colt by Roaring Lion. Descendants of her G3 Park Hill S.-winning second dam Eva Luna (Alleged) include G1 Epsom Derby and G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe-winning sire Workforce (GB) (King’s Best), MG1SW sire Best Solution (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), MSW G1 Moyglare Stud S. third Kissable (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and stakes-winning GI American Oaks third Amandine (GB) (Shamardal).

Bated Breath’s Cairn Gorm Takes the Cabourg

Unbeaten entering Sunday’s G3 Darley Prix de Cabourg, Cairn Gorm (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) kept his tally secure with a battling effort in the Deauville sunshine. Helped by the fact that his compatriot and the 11-10 market-leader Mighty Gurkha (Ire) (Sepoy {Aus}) was left at the start, the chestnut who was carrying the Hunscote Stud colours tracked the pace and was perfectly positioned before hitting the front passing the furlong pole. Asserting from there under Tom Marquand, the 17-5 second favourite scored by a length from Jubilation (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), with a head back to Prince Lancelot (GB) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) in third. “He’s a very nice horse and the ground was quick enough for him today, so he was a little bit hesitant early on,” the winning rider commented. “When he found his stride, he really went and is still undefeated. Whether he’s good enough for a higher level or not you’d only know when you tried.”

This was an inspired piece of placing by connections, with Cairn Gorm having previous won on debut at Windsor June 22 and when under a subsequent penalty at Newbury July 8. Trainer Mick Channon said, “We thought he was a nice horse, but he had to step up today and he has. He’s won a group three going away, so we’ll have to think about taking him back here for the [G1] Prix Morny later in the month.”

Cairn Gorm is out of In Your Time (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}), who is a three-parts sister to the G3 Musidora S. winner Time Away (Ire) by Dalakhani’s sire Darshaan (GB). Her own descendants are headed by the G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Cursory Glance (Distorted Humor), while she is kin to the G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Time Ahead (GB) (Spectrum {Ire}) and the listed-placed Moment of Time (GB) (Rainbow Quest). She is in turn the dam of the G2 Crystal Mile scorer Chief Ironside (GB) (Lawman {Fr}). The third dam is the four-times group 1-winning champion Time Charter (Ire) (Saritamer) who was also responsible for the G2 Jockey Club S.-winning pair Time Allowed (GB) (Sadler’s Wells) and Zinaad (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}). In Your Time’s yearling colt is by Havana Gold (Ire).
