Nahanni Battles To Blue Riband Trial Success

Godolphin's Nahanni (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who bettered a Jan. 8 first-up second over 12 furlongs at Kempton with a breakthrough tally over that same course and distance the following month, prevailed by nine lengths going 12 furlongs in an Apr. 1 Leicester novices' heat on turf debut last time and continued his march forward with a battling victory in Tuesday's Listed Cazoo Blue Riband Trial at Epsom. Sent to the front after extended early skirmishes and nudged along on the lead with three furlongs remaining, he came under a drive when tackled passing the quarter-mile marker and stayed on gamely for continued urging in the closing stages to secure a career high in a bunch finish. Nahanni's victory comes with a golden ticket to the track's June 4 G1 Cazoo Derby.

“It was a nice performance and he has come on again,” said rider William Buick. “He was back down in trip from Leicester, but the drop back wasn't a concern and he handled the track well. He got on the front and was very comfortable up there. I liked his performance as he saw them all off and handled the track, which is key. It was the most competitive race he has ever encountered and he had to fight for it, so he has learnt plenty.”

In-form trainer Charlie Appleby added, “We were very much having a feel of where we were with this horse and I'm pleased with that effort today. We know he gets the trip as he has won his last two starts over a mile-and-a-half prior to today and he has ticked those boxes. He has now ticked the box of handling the track so the likelihood is we will now probably head straight to the Derby with him.”

Nahanni is one of two scorers from as many foals produced by a winning half to MG1SW sire Mastery (GB) (Sulamani {Ire}), G1 Gran Criterium victor Kirklees (Ire) (Jade Robbery) and the dual Group 3-placed First Nation (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Descendants of the February-foaled chestnut's second dam Moyesii (Diesis {GB}), herself a winning daughter of G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest and G1 Haydock Sprint Cup heroine Cherokee Rose (Ire) (Dancing Brave), include G1 Eclipse S.-winning sire Mukhadram (GB) (Shamardal) and MGSW G1 Premio Presidente della Repubblica runner-up Magic Artist (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}).

Champion Sire Dansili Passes At 25, Leaving Lasting Legacy For Juddmonte

Following a short but aggressive illness, champion sire Dansili has died shortly before his 26th birthday at his birthplace, Banstead Manor Stud, in Newmarket, England, Juddmonte announced with great sadness on Wednesday.

Bred by Juddmonte Farms, the son of Danehill was the first foal out of the Listed stakes winner Hasili, a daughter of Kahyasi who went on to become a “blue hen” of considerable note as the dam of six consecutive Graded stakes winners including five individual Group or Grade 1 winners.  Dansili may not have won his Group 1, but he made up for this by becoming one of the Leading British-based sires and broodmare sires of his generation.

Trained in France by André Fabre, Dansili won his first and only race as a 2-year-old, and his racecourse debut at 3, making him a leading contender for the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas) in 1999. Fifteen runners went to post – one of the highest numbers in the race's history – and Dansili found only Sendawar too good. He ran four more times that season, winning the Group 3 Prix Messidor and placing in the Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois (won by Dubai Millennium) and Group 1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp.

A tough and consistent campaigner, Dansili returned for a 4-year-old season in which he won both the Group 3 Prix Edmond Blanc and Group 2 Prix du Muguet and placed four additional times at the highest level, including running second to the “Iron Horse,” Giant's Causeway, in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood and third to War Chant and North East Bound in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Mile by a neck and a nose, the fastest closing quarter in Breeders' Cup history. Soon afterwards, Dansili was returned to his birthplace at Banstead Manor Stud to start a new chapter as a stallion.

Dansili went on to sire 22 Group 1 winners, starting at a fee of £8,000 and rising to a peak of £100,000 thanks to some outstanding horses such as Flintshire, Harbinger, Rail Link, Proviso, Queen's Trust, Dank and The Fugue; and was Champion Sire in France in 2006. He was also an exceptional broodmare sire of the likes of Nezwaah, Cliffs Of Moher, as well as Irish Oaks heroine Chicquita, Time Test, Snow Sky, Agent Murphy, Astaire and Juddmonte stallion Expert Eye. He was pensioned from stud duties in 2018 at the age of 22.

Dansili's influence will be felt at Juddmonte for many years to come through his daughters in the broodmare band and via current Juddmonte stallion Bated Breath, whose career has closely echoed that of his sire to date.

Simon Mockridge, general manager (UK) shares the following tribute: “As a racehorse he was durable, genuine, consistent and expertly handled by André Fabre throughout his career. Although he deserved a Group 1 victory on the racecourse, having been placed in six, that somehow always managed to evade him. During his 17 years at stud he played an intrinsic role alongside Oasis Dream in establishing the reputation of the Juddmonte roster. A truly wonderful, reliable, and uncomplicated character as a stallion he was a firm favourite of the Stallion Team and Juddmonte as a whole. He will be greatly missed.”

Frankel’s Inspiral Remains Perfect After Fillies’ Mile Triumph

Cheveley Park Stud's undefeated 2-year-old filly Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), whose run of three straight successes included impressive wide-margin tallies in Sandown's Listed Star S. and Doncaster's G2 Park Hill S., entered winter quarters at the forefront of the juvenile fillies' division after posting another taking score in Friday's G1 bet365 Fillies' Mile at Newmarket. In so doing, she emulated 2017 scorer Laurens (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), who also picked up Doncaster's Park Hill en route to victory in this straight test. Inspiral had earlier overcome a slow start to debut with a 1 1/2-length score at Newmarket in June and was one of just two ploughing a furrow down the centre of the course and raced in the slipstream of Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}) through halfway. Making smooth headway into contention passing the three-furlong pole, the 8-11 favourite launched her challenge at the quarter-mile marker and was pushed out up the hill to comfortably assert superiority for a career high. Park Hill runner-up Prosperous Voyage (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) was best of the rest, finishing 2 1/2 lengths adrift of the winner and a neck ahead of the keeping-on Cachet in third.

Kingman’s Tumbler A New Rising Star in France

Carlos Laffon-Parias trainee Tumbler (Fr) (Kingman {GB}), a hitherto untested homebred sporting the colours of Alain and Gerard Wertheimer, was eclipsed for favouritism in the betting, but opened up with an impressive daylight rout of five rivals in Thursday's Prix As d'Atout, a seven-furlong heat for unraced 2-year-old colts and geldings, at Saint-Cloud. The 17-5 chance was swiftly into stride and settled into a smooth rhythm racing third, four lengths off the pace, through halfway. Sent wide with the field into the straight, he quickened in taking fashion to sweep by Heatherwood (Fr) (Birchwood {Ire}) passing the two pole and powered clear in style once easing underneath the stands' side rail with 300 metres remaining. Tumbler stretched out to a 10-length advantage from Heatherwood at the line, earning a 'TDN Rising Star' on debut.

Tumbler is the fifth of seven foals and fourth scorer produced by a winning half-sister to three stakes winners headed by G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains-winning sire Falco (Pivotal {GB}) and G3 Prix Eclipse victrix Iron Lips (GB) (Iron Mask). Descendants of Iron Lips include stakes-winning multiple Spanish champion Oriental (Jpn) (Smart Strike), Listed Prix Millkom runner-up Argentic (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) and Listed Prix Francois Boutin third Unveil (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}). The March-foaled bay is a half-brother to Listed Prix de Saint-Patrick Twist (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}), Listed Prix Turenne second Kertez (GB) (Intello {Ger}), a yearling colt by Anodin (Ire) and a weanling filly by Siyouni (Fr). Tumbler's second dam Icelips (Unbridled), herself out of a half-sister to G1SW sire Groom Dancer (Blushing Groom {Fr}), is a half-sister to MG1SP G2 Prix de Malleret victrix Legerete (Rahy) and G2 Prix de Malleret runner-up Underwater (Theatrical {Ire}). Legerete's trio of stakes performers is headed by MGSP Listed Prix Matchem victor Pilote (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) while Underwater's black-type descendants include G3 Prix Noailles and G3 Prix Exbury winner Soliel Marin (Ire) (Kendargent {Fr}).
