Lope De Vega and New Bay Available on Southern Hemisphere Time

Lope De Vega (Ire) (Shamardal) and New Bay (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) will be available to cover on Southern Hemisphere time this year, Ballylinch Stud's Eoin Fives told TTR AusNZ. They will stand for €60,000 (AU$98,957) and €40,000 (AU$65,971) respectively.

In total, Lope De Vega has sired 18 Group 1 winners and 112 individual stakes winners across 12 different countries. From 2011 to 2014, he shuttled to the now-defunct Patinack Farm, and left an indelible stamp on the Australian industry. The result was four elite-level winners of nine Group 1s; Santa Ana Lane (Aus), Vega Magic (Aus), Gytrash (Aus) and Vega One (Aus).

His potency when crossed with Fastnet Rock mares has certainly helped in accruing that total, with the mix firing at a rate of 21 per cent stakes winners to runners. Both Santa Ana Lane and Gytrash fall into that category, with their exploits no doubt driving demand on the other side of the world.

“It's a cross that seems to work very well, and it's definitely pushed an uptake up here in the last few years where we've covered a lot more Fastnet Rock mares,” Fives said. “He's very easy to breed to. He's an outcross for over 90 per cent of the mare population in Europe, so, if you're buying a mare up here, he's very easy to breed to as there are very few things you have to avoid in a pedigree.”

Fives reported that New Bay was also getting the attention of Southern Hemisphere breeders. He received the support of one of Australia's top stables at the Goffs London Sale recently. Landed on by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, the aptly named New Endeavour (GB) was a £260,000 (AU$499,000) purchase for the Tulloch Lodge team, who was previously co-owned by Ballylinch and Teme Valley.

He will remain in training with Roger Varian in Newmarket before eventually making his way down to Australia.

Twice a handicap winner over 1400 metres, New Endeavour was sold in the lead up to Royal Ascot, and subsequently ran second in the high-class Britannia S., earning an official rating of 103, which puts him well in the mix at Listed level in the UK. He appears to be on a neat upward curve and may yet be New Bay's next stakes winner.

Meanwhile, Fives reported a surge of interest following that solid Royal Ascot performance. “Coming back from Ascot, more Australians were asking about him (New Bay) and curious about him,” he said. “We can probably see his profile increasing over the next few years, he's only a young sire.”

“His fee has increased every year since he's had runners. His first crop really dazzled, I suppose, and then the last season was just incredible. “He had a Group 1 winner with Saffron Beach, and then he just totally stole the show on British Champions Day when he took the two feature races with Bayside Boy and Bay Bridge.”

TDN Rising Star Beauvatier Extends Perfect Streak To Three

Yann Barberot trainee Beauvatier (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}–Enchanting Skies {Ire}, by Sea The Stars {Ire}) was two-for-two heading into Deauville's Listed Prix Roland de Chambure and remained on a roll after notching a 1 1/4-length success in the seven-furlong test. He became the 12th 'TDN Rising Star' for his sire (by Shamardal) in a May 9 five-furlong newcomers' test at Chantilly and doubled his haul later that month, upped to six furlongs at Saint-Cloud, with a defeat of 'TDN Rising Star' and subsequent G3 Prix du Bois victrix Ramatuelle (Justify) when last seen.

Beauvatier, now owned by Haras d'Etreham in partnership with Philippe Allaire, was steadied to track the leaders in third after a slick break in this black-type bow and was gathered together in readiness for his bid once turning for home. Angled outside for a clear run with 350 metres remaining, the 3-5 pick quickened in impressive fashion to seize control entering the final furlong and coasted to the line in the closing stages to easily withstand the late threat of Zabiari (GB) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) for a career high.

“This horse has really a big engine and he didn't even have to extend himself to win,” claimed Barberot. “When Maxime [Guyon] switched him out, he settled the issue within two strides. My concern is that the horse lacks some strength and I would like to see him change physically, to grow and strengthen up. This is why I will give him a small break now and hope that it will do him some good. He will return in September for the [Sept. 3 G3] Prix La Rochette [at ParisLongchamp].”

Beauvatier, a €160,000 Arqana August purchase and half to a yearling filly by Siyouni {Fr}), is the first of two foals produced by Listed Prix de Thiberville runner-up Enchanting Skies (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), herself a sale-topping €500,000 Baden-Baden September yearling in 2016. The February-foaled dark bay's dam is one of four stakes performers out of Listed Kolner Fruhjahrs-Stuten-Preis third Estefania (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}), headed by G1 Preis von Europa victor Empoli (Ger) (Halling). Estefania, in turn, is out of a half-sister to multiple Group 1-winning G2 German 1000 Guineas and G2 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) heroine Elle Danzig (Ger) (Roi Danzig). Beauvatier becomes Lope De Vega's 113th stakes winner.

New Bay’s Alcantor Strikes For TDN Rising Stardom In France

Edouard de Rothschild's Alcantor (Fr) (New Bay {GB}–Bianca De Medici {GB}, by Medicean {GB}) was a picture of calmness during the extended preliminaries of Tuesday's Prix Chapeau Rouge at Saint-Cloud and exploded onto the scene with a rare display of authority to attain 'TDN Rising Star' status in taking fashion.

The seven-furlong contest has been used as a springboard to higher by others, most notably subsequent Group 1 winners Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) and Arapaho (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}). Alcantor is the second Rising Star for his sire (by Dubawi {Ire}), whose first was G1 Irish 2000 Guineas runner-up New Energy (Ire). He becomes the first juvenile winner of the campaign for Andre Fabre, who also nurtured Glen Shiel and Arapaho.

The €180,000 Arqana December graduate was swiftly into stride and comfortable on the lead throughout. Turning for home with a three-length buffer, the 11-5 favourite soon doubled his advantage without breaking sweat and was on cruise control inside the final quarter-mile, gearing down late to easily outclass Bateau Blanc (GB) (Kendargent {Fr}), himself a full-brother to G2 Derby Italiano hero Tokyo Gold (Fr), by a facile 2 1/2 lengths.

“I bought him as a foal in Deauville and he was raised at [Haras de] Meautry,” de Rothschild said. “We do so sometimes and we can compare our crop to others. He has been quite impressive, my first runner with [Bauyrzhan] Murzabayev in the saddle, and we were quite hopeful beforehand.” With no immediate targets on the horizon, and a seemingly patient approach intended, France Galop's President added, “There are no plans at this time, we feel the success is more the result of a true quality rather than precocity.”

Pedigree Notes
Alcantor is the seventh of eight foals and sixth scorer from as many runners out of a multiple-winning half to stakes-winning Hungarian champion Thunder Teddington (GB) (Halling). The March-foaled bay is a half-brother to G2 Union-Rennen victor Boscaccio (Ger) (Mount Nelson {GB}) and a yearling filly by Romanised (Ire). Descendants of Alcantor's third dam Trevillari (Riverman), herself a full-sister to G1 Prix Saint-Alary victrix Treble, include dual G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine Treve (Fr) (Motivator {GB}), GI Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile S. third Tsigane (Fr) (Anabaa) and last year's G2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup victor Francesco Guardi (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). His fourth dam Trevilla (Lyphard) is an unraced half-sister to storied champion Triptych (Riverman).

Making Waves: Never Say Never

In this series, the TDN takes a look at notable successes of European-based sires in North America. This week's column is highlighted by a pair of new stakes winners by No Nay Never on Saturday.

No Nay Never Sires Stakes Double

Coolmore sire No Nay Never sired a stakes double in America on Saturday, to bring his international total to 49 stakes winners.

First it was No Nay Mets (Ire), a colt from his 2021 crop, taking the Royal Palm Juvenile S. at Gulfstream Park (video), a Royal Ascot qualifier. Owned by Bregman Family Racing, LLC, the colt is trained by George Weaver.

Bred by Coolmore, the son of Etoile (War Front) was a €180,000 yearling out of the Arqana August Sale, and was a $335,000 buyback at the OBS Spring Sale in April. The first foal out of his Group 3-winning dam, No Nay Mets was making his racecourse debut. His granddam, Gagnoa (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), has produced group winner and G1 Criterium International second Ancient Rome (War Front), while this is also the family of G1 Derby winner Pour Moi (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf heroine Pizza Bianca (Fastnet Rock {Aus}).

Later in the afternoon, No Nay Never's No Nay Hudson (Ire) won the William Walker S. at Churchill Downs for trainer Wesley Ward (video). The 3-year-old colt is owned by Andrew Farm and For the People Racing Stable, LLC.

Part of the RJB Bloodstock breeding programme, the half-brother to the stakes-placed Tailor's Row (Street Cry {Ire}) was a $190,000 Keeneland September yearling when selected by Demi O'Byrne and Sean Grassick. His Grade II-winning dam has a juvenile colt named Old Flag (Ire) (U S Navy Flag) and a yearling full-brother to the winner still to come.

No Nay Never has sired 35 winners from 66 runners (53%) in the U.S. and has 17 stakes horses (26%). Of his nine stakes winners (13.6%) in that jurisdiction, GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies heroine Meditate (Ire) is his best runner so far.

Lope De Vega Winners For Familiar Connections

No Nay Never was not the only stallion to sire a pair of winners in the U.S., as Ballylinch Stud's Lope De Vega (Ire) teamed up with Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables and his go-to trainer Chad Brown with 3-year-old winners Reflexivity (Ire) at Belmont Park (video) and Program Trading (GB) at Monmouth Park (video) this past week.

The Niarchos Family's Flaxman Stables Ireland bred Reflexivity out of their G3 Lacken S. heroine Only Mine (Ire) (Pour Moi {Ire}). Originally a €250,000 Goffs Orby yearling, the chestnut filly was bought back for $240,000 out of the OBS Spring Sale last month. Distant kin to Group 2 winner and multiple Grade I-placed Dream Peace (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) whose Soul Sister (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) won the G3 Musidora S. at York on Wednesday–she is followed by a yearling filly by Wootton Bassett (GB).

Fittocks Stud & Arrow Farm & Stud bred Klaravich's first-out Monmouth winner, Program Trading, who was bought by Mike Ryan out of Book 1 at Tattersalls October for 250,000gns. His half-sister Alabama Anna (GB) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) has yet to race. From the family of G2 Park Hill S. winner Silk Sari (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}), who also ran second at Group 1 level, he is a half to a Pinatubo (Ire) filly born in 2022. Third dam Gossamer (GB) (Sadler's Wells) won the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas in 2002.

Lope De Vega has also sired 35 winners from 66 U.S. runners (53%). Of that batch, 16 are stakes horses (24%) and five are stakes winners (7.5%). Both Newspaperofrecord (Ire) and Aunt Pearl (Ire) won editions of the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, the former for Brown and Klaravich.
