Ballydoyle representative EUPHORIC (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who is out of a half-sister to G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, G1 Fillies' Mile and GI Just A Game S. placegetter Fantasia (GB) (Sadler's Wells), realised the fourth-highest price when knocked down for 1.9-million guineas at last year's Tattersalls Book 1 fixture and is one of two Aidan O'Brien-trained newcomers in this one-mile test. He is accompanied by stablemate South Pole (Ire) (No Nay Never), himself a 650,000gns Book 1 acquisition, who is a half-brother to Sunday's GIII Tokyo City Cup victor Missed The Cut (Quality Road) out of GI Flower Bowl S. fourth Beauly (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}).

Godolphin's €130,000 Arqana October purchase CASAPUEBLO (IRE) (Le Havre {Ire}) attained 'TDN Rising Star' status with an encouraging debut score over this course and distance in his only prior outing last month. The Andre Fabre trainee encounters five rivals in this return.

THE EUPHRATES (GB) (Frankel {GB}) is one of two Ballydoyle representatives and the newcomer of the pair, with Seamie Heffernan on the 800,000gns Book 1 graduate who is a relative of Spectrum's high-class brothers Golan (Ire) and Tartan Bearer (Ire). He is joined by the Curragh sixth Chantilly (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a half-brother to the group 2 winners Royal Dornoch (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) and Hawksmoor (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}) who is ably assisted by the five-pound claimer Killian Hennessy.

Galileo’s Warm Heart Prevails In Vermeille Tussle

Coolmore and Westerberg's G2 Ribblesdale S. victrix Warm Heart (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}–Sea Siren {Aus}, by Fastnet Rock {Aus}) was defiant when battling to a career high in last month's G1 Yorkshire Oaks and displayed her fighting qualities once again to garner Sunday's G1 Qatar Prix Vermeille at ParisLongchamp.

As she had done on the Knavesmire, Warm Heart settled into a smooth rhythm racing off the pace in fourth, having broken from the stalls with her nose shaving the turf here. Making relentless headway under pressure in the straight, the 3-1 second favourite was driven along to launch her challenge passing the furlong pole and stayed on well under whipless rousting in the dying embers to withstand the persistent threat of G2 Prix de Pomone victrix Melo Melo (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire) by a short-neck. Yorkshire Oaks fifth Sea Silk Road (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) ran on to finish 1 3/4 lengths adrift in third for her first placing at the highest level.

“The race was a bit of a trappy contest,” explained winning rider James Doyle. “She exits the gates very well, but she slipped today and lost her action for a few strides, so I found myself a bit fenced-in and further back than I would have liked. They didn't go very fast and I was worried during the race, but she showed a lot of determination to come out on top. She doesn't really stop once in the lead, but tends to idle a bit and wait for the others, which is what she did in the Yorkshire Oaks and what she did again today. As for the Arc, her connections will decide. My feeling is that she needs good ground, being a light-actioned sort, and the going is therefore important in this regard. We've already seen editions of the Arc being run on fast ground, it can happen, but it's not common either.”

Francis-Henri Graffard, trainer of runner-up Melo Melo, added, “Melo Melo was conceding weight to the winner today, but we came up against a filly who was really a tough cookie. Looking to the future, she'll be better suited by much softer tracks. In any case, I think she delivered a great performance.”

Sea Silk Road's rider Tom Marquand expressed satisfaction with the run of his filly and commented, “She's a super filly and I'm very pleased with her performance. She had run a little freely in the Yorkshire Oaks and, one day, she'll win her Group 1 race when conditions come right for her. She's a classy filly.”

Reflecting on a long season and looking forward to another, Blue Rose Cen's trainer Christopher Head said, “She was in very good order in the first half of the season, but it's possible that the season has been a little long for the filly. We're going to talk to her owner, and see how she recovers, so we can look ahead to the future. She should stay in training next year, so we'll certainly be concentrating on her 2024 campaign.”

Warm Heart is the fifth of eight foals and one of four scorers produced by G1 Manikato S., G1 Doomben 10,000 and G1 BTC Cup heroine Sea Siren (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), herself kin to the pattern-race winners Oratorio (Aus) (Stravinsky) and Lady Dehere (NZ) (Dehere). The February-foaled bay, whose third dam is G1 Karrakatta Plate heroine Hold That Smile (Aus) (Haulpak {Aus}), is a full-sister to G3 Derrinstown Stud Fillies S. runner-up Celestial Object (Ire) and the winning 2-year-old colt Bremen (Ire). Luxembourg, Auguste Rodin Irish Champion-bound

Trainer Aidan O'Brien indicated MG1SWs Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) would return in Leopardstown's G1 Royal Bahrain Irish Champion S. on Sept. 9. The stablemates were last seen in the G1 King George and Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot on July 29, where Luxembourg was a hard-fought fourth while the dual Derby winner came home a distant 10th.

Their conditioner could find no obvious reason for the poor showing but remained hopeful the son of the late Deep Impact could bounce back at Leopardstown.

“We're very happy with Luxembourg, everything has gone very well,” said the Ballydoyle handler of the 4-year-old, who took the 2022 renewal of Leopardstown's 10-furlong test. “The King George is a tough race and he was on the pace. The plan is at the moment both he and Auguste Rodin are going to Leopardstown.”

He continued, “Really, we don't know what happened to Auguste in the King George. He was drawn very wide and trapped very wide and he came off the bridle a lot earlier than Ryan [Moore] would have thought. It's probably a blessing in disguise, as if he came off the bridle at the stage, he was probably going to get a very tough race. For a baby 3-year-old, he was probably lucky he didn't get into a brawl and he came home very well.”

Regardless of what happens the rest of the season, O'Brien hinted that the Classic-winning sophomore was unlikely to return for a 4-year-old season.

“He's such a unique horse pedigree-wise he's kind of irreplaceable really,” he said.

Also on tap to resurface on Irish Champions Festival weekend is Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), 20-length winner of the G1 Qatar Prix du Cadran in his final appearance in 2022 which saw him go unbeaten for that season. Injury ruling out a return in the first half of 2023, the colt is looking to defend his G1 Comer Group International Irish St. Leger crown at the Curragh Sept. 10.

“Four months ago, you'd have said he'll never race again. He got an infection in his joint and then the ligament down the outside of his pastern shifted, so it became unstable,” said O'Brien. “Everyone has done a wonderful job with him. If we got a run into him, we'll look towards [ParisLongchamp, Oct. 1] Arc weekend again, either the Arc or the Cadran, but I would imagine the Arc would be too much too quick for him.”
