Godolphin Runner Scores in His Majesty The King’s Cup in Bahrain

Godolphin's Passion And Glory (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) returned to Bahrain after finishing second in the G3 Bahrain International Trophy on Nov. 18 to win the Listed His Majesty The King's Cup at the Bahrain Equestrian Club on Friday. The 7-year-old gelding is trained by Saeed bin Suroor and was ridden by Daniel Tudhope. Passion And Glory got the better of the Appleby-trained First Ruler (GB) (Dubawi [Ire]) to give Godolphin a one-two finish.

Bin Suroor said, “It was a great result to see Passion And Glory win here. He is a proven horse and his jockey looked after him. If you look back at his wins, he likes going right-handed and that is why we brought him here.” Earlier on the card, the 6-year-old gelding Byline (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) was victorious in the Listed Al Methaq Mile after an eighth in Saudi Arabia in the G3 Neom Turf Cup two weeks ago. The Allen Smith trainee was ridden by Gerald Mosse, which gave the trainer and owners Al Adiyat Racing a treble on the day.

Bahraini Listed Races Attract Godolphin Participation

A trio of runners bearing the Godolphin royal blue will contest the Listed His Majesty The King's Cup Sponsored By Bapco and the Listed Al Methaq Mile in Bahrain on Friday.

G3 Glorious S. winner and Group 1-placed Passion And Glory (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), representing Saeed bin Suroor, and First Ruler (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) from the Charlie Appleby yard both line up in the King's Cup. Appleby also saddles listed winner and multiple group-placed Modern News (GB) (Shamardal) in the Al Methaq Mile.

Appleby said, “First Ruler has got a progressive profile. This is his first test at listed level so we will learn a bit more about him. His profile is going the right way that he doesn't look out of place at this level, but we will be wiser afterwards. The track and conditions should suit him.”

On Modern News Appleby added, “Modern News is a solid campaigner; I was delighted with his last start at Meydan and stepping back up to a mile will suit him. With a nice draw, I think he is the one they've got to beat. He has got a penalty, but I think he can overcome that, and conditions will suit him.”

Zagato (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who won last year's edition of the King's Cup, will attempt to defend his crown for trainer Fawzi Nass. Allan Smith has two in the race for Al Adiyat Racing: Rayounpour (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) and Recovery Run (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}).

Smith said, “Recovery Run and Rayounpour have both been in and out of form this season, but they're both working well so we're hopeful. The competition is getting much better in Bahrain and the strength of the horses is amazing in the last three years. We love the competition that's what it's all about, it makes everyone get better horses and improve their stable.”

Smith added, “This is the raceday of our season. It always has been The King's Cup. It's the equivalent to Royal Ascot; it's the pinnacle of racing in Bahrain.”

Third International Winner As Bahrain Turf Series Concludes

Devaste (GB) (Buratino {Ire}) and Goemon (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) won the six-furlong £60,000 Al Sakhir Cup and the 2000-metre £60,000 Vision 2030 Cup, respectively, as the 2023 Bahrain Turf Series concluded on Friday.

At the conclusion of the 10-race series, a total of £182,400 (30.4%) of the £600,000 prize-money available had been won by international horses. The three international winners throughout the span of the series were Lucander (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}), who struck on the undercard on Friday for George Baker; Nomadic Empire (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) for David O'Meara; and King Of Conquest (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), who is trained by Charlie Appleby.

His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Chairman of The Bahrain Turf Club, said, “We have welcomed more connections from around the world to The Kingdom of Bahrain this season, with 20 international horses competing in the second year of the Bahrain Turf Series. We have seen some very competitive racing throughout the Turf Series and it's been brilliant to see leading international trainers Charlie Appleby, David O'Meara and George Baker enjoy success in the Kingdom.

Crown Prince’s Cup Highlight Of Bahrain’s Friday Card

His Royal Highness The Crown Prince's Cup Sponsored By Howden, as well as the penultimate races in the Bahrain Turf Series feature in Bahrain's Friday racing.

The 2000-metre listed race has attracted 15 horses, led by Godolphin runner Warren Point (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who won at Kempton in October for trainer Charlie Appleby. George Baker sends Lucander (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}), who won one of the earlier Bahrain Turf Series races, while Roger Fell trainee and Group 3 winner Marie's Diamond (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) completes the internationals.

Both The Anchorman Cup and The Hawar Cup, over 1800 metres and 1200 metres, respectively, have also drawn international entries. Godolphin's King Of Conquest (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) is one 16 in The Anchorman Cup. Watchya (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}), representing Baker, is aiming to go one better after his first Bahraini start in the sprint feature.
