The Nov. 20 £500,000 Bahrain International Trophy field of 14 has been set after the latest supplementary stage closed. John Gosden sends HH Shaikh Isa bin Salman Alkhalifa’s Global Giant (GB) (Shamardal) who will be ridden by Frankie Dettori. King Power Racing is represented by GSW Bangkok (Ire) (Australia {GB}).

Completing the field are: Lady Wannabe (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), Certain Lad (GB) (Clodovil {Ire}), Pogo (Ire) (Zebedee {GB}), Quest The Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}), and the local pair of Port Lions (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and What a Welcome (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}).

“We are absolutely delighted with the class of horses that we have attracted to this year’s Bahrain International Trophy,” said Shaikh Salman bin Rashed Al-Khalifa, Executive Director of Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club in a statement. “To have five individual Group 1 winners in the field compared to only one last year shows the leap in quality. We are very grateful to the trainers and owners for placing their trust in Bahrain and we very much look forward to welcoming them to Bahrain.”

Hollie Doyle to Ride Deirdre in Bahrain

Jockey Hollie Doyle has picked up the ride on Group 1 winner Deirdre (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}) in the Nov. 20 £500,000 International Trophy in Bahrain, Racing Post reported. Doyle, who earned her first Group 1 win aboard Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) on British Champions Day last month, has ridden 129 winners through Saturday and will ride Mighty Gurkha (Ire) (Sepoy {Aus}) in the GII Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint on Nov. 6. Deirdre, winner of the G1 Nassau S. in the UK in 2019, was also successful in the 2017 G1 Shuka Sho at the highest level.

“I was delighted to get the call-up to ride Deirdre and had a first sit on her in Newmarket on Saturday morning,” Doyle told Racing Post. “She’s a pretty popular horse in Japan and on her day she’s very good. I’ve never ridden in Bahrain before and it’s great to get the international recognition. The owner, Mr. [Toji] Morita, contacted my agent direct and hopefully this will open other doors. She felt great on Saturday and connections seemed delighted with her, which is the main thing.”

Classic Winner Sovereign Supplemented for Bahrain International Trophy

Sovereign (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the 2019 G1 Irish Derby hero for Aidan O’Brien and the Coolmore partners, is a late supplement to the 2000-metre £500,000 Bahrain International Trophy on Nov. 20, the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club announced on Wednesday. Also second in this term’s G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO S., Sovereign will be O’Brien’s first Bahraini runner.

“Sovereign is a strong mile and a quarter horse,” O’Brien told the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club notes team. (Click here to view the interview.) “He is a very strong galloper who likes to go forward in his races and we think the Bahrain International Trophy will suit him. He is a big genuine, sound horse. He’s an Irish Derby winner. We saw what he did in the Irish Derby and he ran a massive race in the King George where he was second to Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), so we think the race will suit him and we are looking forward to seeing him run.”

The supplementary stage closes on Nov. 3, with a max field of 14 allowed (12 Europeans and two Bahraini horses).
