Baden-Baden Back In Action From Sunday

Baden-Baden's 'Grosse Woche', which includes some top-class racing action alongside music festivals and Germany's major yearling sale at BBAG, begins on Sunday, with the G3 Preis der Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe as the highlight of an 11-race card.

After a 10-month break, and with the racecourse at Iffezheim under new management, the 'Super Sunday' fixture ushers in four meetings–down from six in previous years–throughout the week, culminating in the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden the following Sunday. Among those set to line up in this Sunday's Group 3 contest over 2,000 metres is Quest The Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) who is already a dual Group winner at the track.

Godolphin have won the last three runnings of the Grosser Preis, including in 2019 with the following season's top-rated horse in the world, Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). This time around, both Charlie Appleby and Saeed Bin Suroor have entries, with Walton Street (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) and Global Heat (Ire) (Toronado {Ire}) respectively. Also among the prospective line-up is this season's G1 Deutsches Derby winner Sisfahan (Fr) (Isfahan {Ger}).

The BBAG Yearling Sale, featuring 223 lots including a Sea The Stars (Ire) half-sister to the Gestut Rottgen-bred Derby winners Windstoss (Ger) (Shirocco {Ger}) and Weltstar (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), takes place next door to the racecourse on Friday, Sept. 3.

BBAG Launches New August HIT Sale

The BBAG August Sale, a new sale comprised mainly of horses-in-training that have entries during German racing's Big Week at Baden-Baden, was announced by the sales company on Wednesday. A single-day sale, action will begin at 2 p.m. local time on Aug. 20, with the Big Week of racing kicking off from Aug. 29-Sept. 5.

Bids will be accepted in person, by phone or online. All horses in the catalogue can be viewed at their respective racing stables. Registration deadline for the auction is Friday, Aug. 13. Buyers can register at www.bbag-sales.de.

“After the success of the spring auction, we want to meet the high demand for starting horses and establish a new auction as part of the Big Week,” says BBAG Managing Director Klaus Eulenberger.

African American Contributions To Horse Racing Recognized Ahead Of Kentucky Derby 147

On Monday, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear signed a proclamation naming April 25 – May 1 Ed Brown Society Week in the commonwealth, recognizing African Americans' contributions to horse racing ahead of the 147th running of the Kentucky Derby.

“In the 1800s and early 1900s, the majority of jockeys were African Americans. But, despite their centuries of contributions, after World War I, African Americans were pushed out of the sport,” said Gov. Beshear. “I am proud to recognize the Ed Brown Society, an organization helping right this wrong by providing mentorship to the next generation of African American Kentuckians in the horseracing industry.”

The Ed Brown Society is named after Edward D. Brown, who was born into slavery in Lexington in 1850, but through his tenacity and love of the sport developed into one of the most accomplished African American horsemen in the history of Thoroughbred racing.

Brown was sold at age seven to a proprietor of the horse farm Woodburn Stud in Woodford County. Brown had a small boyhood stature, but gained a vast knowledge of horses, which afforded him the opportunity to become a jockey in his early teens.

At 14, Brown won his first race on a horse named Asteroid. A year later, Brown was emancipated. He continued to work at Woodburn Stud until the proprietor's death in 1867. Afterwards, Brown built his career as a top jockey and trainer until he saved enough money to establish his own racing stable, where he owned and trained a number of stakes winners.

Brown's most distinguished career highlights include two standout victories: He rode Kingfisher to win the fourth running of the Belmont Stakes in 1870, and led Baden-Baden as a trainer in 1877 to win the third running of the Kentucky Derby.

Brown's important role in thoroughbred racing was confirmed with his 1984 induction into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.

The Ed Brown Society was recently established to celebrate the rich history of African Americans in the equine industry as well as to create opportunities for young African American Kentuckians.

“At the Ed Brown Society, in our past, we want to acknowledge and educate about the wonderful history of African Americans in horse racing in our great state,” said Ray Daniels, chief executive officer of Equity Solutions Group and president of the Ed Brown Society. “In the present day, we want to highlight the great jobs and opportunities in the equine industry. We've been successful in guiding 30 African Americans into horse ownership in the past few years. And the future for us is to educate young students to make these opportunities in the industry a reality.”

The society aims to increase diversity in thoroughbred racing and its support professions, helping more people pursue a career they are passionate about, and at the same time, helping the equine industry reach its full potential. For example, as of 2018, African Americans comprised 13.4% of the U.S. population, but made up only 1.7% of veterinary employment, a statistic the society wants to help improve.

Through partnerships with industry stakeholders and educational institutions, the Ed Brown Society has the opportunity to ensure the horseracing industry is well-positioned culturally and economically to create a stronger, more diverse pipeline of talent for the future.

Intello’s Noble Heidi Is Germany’s Winter Queen

Manfred Schmelzer’s Noble Heidi (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) added to trainer Henk Grewe’s regular Tours de France tally with a July 1 debut win over seven furlongs at Compiegne, slipping to third in an Aug. 21 heat over the same distance at Clairefontaine, and she regained the winning thread upped to one mile at Chantilly last month, defeating subsequent G3 Prix Thomas Bryon second Homeryan (Fr) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in that Sept. 1 test. She was sent postward as the 17-10 selection for Sunday’s G3 Preis der Winterkonigin, Germany’s premier event for juvenile fillies, and duly delivered for a career high in the one-mile Baden-Baden feature. The eventual winner stalked the pace in fourth after an alert getaway in this black-type bow. Improving into third at the top of the straight, she was sent in pursuit of Novemba (Ger) (Gleneagles {Ire}) approaching the final furlong and kept on strongly under continued rousting in the closing stages to deny that rival by 3/4-of-a-length nearing the line.

“She works well at home and has the feel of a very good horse although I did manage to get beat on her once,” winning rider Andrasch Starke told GaloppOnline. “The race was run at a fast pace and I had to commit on the bend. She quickened very well, but had a look around once she hit the front.” Champion trainer Henk Grewe added, “We selected her with the owner and she impressed us at the sales, although the price was a bit high for the pedigree. I think she will stay 10 furlongs without any problems and we’ll see if she can go beyond that. We might take her back to France to build her up, but she is not a [G2 German] 1000 Guineas filly. The [G1 Preis der] Diana is her ultimate goal.” Peter Schiergen, trainer of the runner-up Novemba, said, “Sybille [Vogt] gave her a ride and the horse ran great. She will now go on her winter break and we shall aim her at next year’s [G2 German] 1000 Guineas.”

Noble Heidi, half to a yearling filly by Zarak (Fr) and the sixth pattern-race winner for her sire, is the second of three foals and lone scorer produced by a half-sister to Listed Radley S. runner-up Oxsana (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and G3 Kolner Herbst-Stuten-Meile victress Turning Light (Ger) (Fantastic Light), herself the dam of MGSP Listed La Puente S. winner Surrey Star (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). Her second dam, G2 German 1000 Guineas placegetter Turning Leaf (Ire) (Last Tycoon {Ire}), is kin to Listed Bremer Sprint-Cup third Tartuffo (Ger) (Big Shuffle) and Listed Krefelder Stutenpreis third Tamarita (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}). The latter’s descendants include G3 Preis des Winterfavoriten-winning sire Tai Chi (Ger) (High Chaparral {Ire}), G3 Hamburger Stutenpreis victress Taraja (Ger) (High Chaparral {Ire}), this year’s G3 Prix Daphnis winner Thorin (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) and this term’s Listed Prix Gold River winner Think Of Me (Ger) (So You Think {NZ}).
