Fall Plans Revealed For Shadwell Stars

Shadwell group winners Raabihah (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) are targetting the Oct. 3 G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and Sept. 5 G1 Prix du Moulin, respectively, Shadwell Racing Manager Angus Gold revealed on Monday.

A 4-year-old filly, Raabihah was fifth in the 2020 Arc after taking the G3 Prix de Psyche last August and running second in the Sept. 13 G1 Qatar Prix Vermeille. Prior to her victory in Sunday's G2 Prix de Pomone, the chestnut was second thrice as the favourite in the May 2 G3 Prix Allez France Longines, the May 26 G2 Prix Corrida at Saint-Cloud and in the Listed Prix du Pays d'Auge at Clairefontaine on Aug. 1. She is also a possible for the G1 Qatar Prix Vermeille on Sept. 12.

“I'd love to think we can have another crack at the Arc–that was the reason she was kept in training,” said Gold. “She got beat a couple of times earlier this season. But as (trainer) Jean-Claude (Rouget) said to me yesterday, sometimes with these fillies who have a relatively hard time at three–she was racing at the top table–it can just take them a while to get back to that level.

“We gave her a break at the stud, and it's just taken her three runs to get back up to speed. The distance yesterday is exactly what she should be running over on pedigree.

“It was great to get her back on track, and I don't see any reason why she wouldn't go for the Arc. Jean-Claude just wants to see how she comes out of it first before deciding whether she runs in the Vermeille first or not.”

Undefeated G3 Bonhams Thoroughbred S. hero Baaeed is in good form for trainer William Haggas. A half-brother to triple Group 3 winner Hukum (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), the colt won a maiden at Leicester on June 7 and doubled up in a Newmarket novice on June 19. Given a first taste of stakes company on July 8, he captured the Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. over a mile at HQ by four lengths. His winning margin in the Bonhams Thoroughbred S. was 6 ½ lengths, also at a mile at Goodwood.

“At the moment we are probably going to the Prix du Moulin, that was the latest from the last conversation I had with Sheikha Hissa and William Haggas,” Gold said of Baaeed. “So the number one plan is to go to the Moulin if all is well.

“Obviously before the horse had run it would have been a silly thing to say this is what he would do, but he was a well-bred horse going into it. It just took him a bit of time to come to himself.

“What probably has surprised me is the speed he's shown–maybe it's just class. Before he'd ever ran I'd have thought he was probably going to be a mile-and-a-quarter to mile-and-a-half horse, so to see him doing all this over a mile is hugely encouraging.

“It's a not problem to have but he's showing too much speed, if that makes sense. He's a very exciting horse so we'll see if he can take the next step up.”

Sea The Stars’s Baaeed Explosive in Goodwood’s Thoroughbred

Shadwell's homebred 3-year-old colt Baaeed (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) announced his arrival on the scene going three-for-three with a four-length rout in Newmarket's Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. earlier this month and continued a rapid rise through the ranks with an explosive performance in Friday's G3 Bonhams Thoroughbred S. at Goodwood. He had earlier snagged a June 7 one-mile maiden on debut at Leicester, following up under a six-pound penalty in a June 19 novice heat at Newmarket, and went postward with overwhelming crowd confidence for this fourth outing at the one-mile trip. Baaeed employed patient tactics from flagfall and settled off the pace, racing sixth of the seven runners, through halfway. Making eyecatching headway under a motionless Jim Crowley in the straight, the 2-5 favourite loomed large hard on the steel approaching the furlong marker and lengthened clear in impressive fashion to easily outclass G1 Coral-Eclipse fourth El Drama (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) by a widening 6 1/2 lengths. Royal Ascot's G2 King Edward VII S. runner-up Tasman Bay (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) bolstered the form and finished a half length back in third.

“People keep saying he is running good times, but he's just a good horse and keeps doing it,” said trainer William Haggas. “He's sound, healthy and fast. I learnt today that he doesn't need fast ground to be at his best and it confirmed that he is a good horse. Baaeed is a full-brother to Hukum, who stays 14 furlongs, and looking at him, he looks like he is faster than his pedigree suggests. We will stay at a mile for now. He started life on June 7 and it is now July 30. He has had four races and been running in decent company against 3-year-olds. He's in the races that he should be and it is time he took on the better ones in the bigger races. He is entered in the [G1 Prix] Jacques Le Marois, the [G2] Celebration Mile back here and the [G1 Prix du] Moulin. I'm not for running them regularly, but horses are bred to race and I am very happy to run him in a top-class race next time.”

Shadwell's racing manager Angus Gold added, “It looked like he got there very quickly when Jim [Crowley] asked him. He has a fantastic attitude and you've got to think he is a Group 1 horse. Until he proves us wrong, or gets caught out over a mile, there's no point in going up to 10 furlongs. He is very much a 12-furlong horse on pedigree, but you just have to stand behind him and look at his quarters to see where his speed comes from. We are lucky to have him and too much speed is a nice problem to have.”

Reflecting on the performance, rider Jim Crowley commented, “Baaeed has an engine on him and I was quite happy to sit where I was. We had a low draw, but I didn't want to go up the inside and complicate it, especially here at Goodwood. He got into a nice rhythm and, when I pulled him out, I knew I had plenty of horse. We had a few concerns about the good-to-soft ground as he has not gone on it before, but as you could see it was no problem. He is a proper horse and you would like to think that he is a Group 1 horse, but he's got to go and do it. I don't see any reason to step him up in trip at the moment and, from a stallion's point of view, you'd love him to win Groups 1 races over a mile. I am sure, at some stage, he will go up in trip.”

Roger Varian was not downcast in defeat and accepted runner-up El Drama had met with something special. “In trying to stretch the winner, he just tired in the final 100 yards, but we are pleased he held on for second,” the Newmarket trainer said. “We were blown away by the winner, but he ran a nice race. El Drama is a very likeable horse and just shy of the top grade at the moment. I think he will improve with age and will be a nice horse to have in the stable over the next year or two. He is at this level while the winner looked a Group 1 horse.”

Baaeed is the fifth of seven foals and one of three scorers out of Listed Prix de Liancourt victrix Aghareed (Kingmambo), herself a daughter of MGISW US champion Lahudood (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}). Lahudood, in turn, is a granddaughter of Listed Cheshire Oaks runner-up Bashayer (Mr. Prospector), herself one of seven black-type performers out of MGSW blue hen Height of Fashion (Fr) (Bustino {GB}). Baaeed is a full-brother to last term's G3 Geoffrey Freer S. and this month's G3 Silver Cup winner Hukum (Ire). The April-foaled homebred bay is also a half-brother to the hitherto unraced 2-year-old filly Zaghaareed (GB) (Intello {Ger}) and a yearling colt by Nathaniel (Ire).

Sea the Stars Colt Lights Up Newmarket

Despite the exploits of Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}), there is still room at the top in the 3-year-old miling division and Thursday's Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. played host to one who is within touching distance of that elite performer in Shadwell's unbeaten Baaeed (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}). With the G1 St James's Palace S. fourth Maximal (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and the G1 2000 Guineas sixth One Ruler (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the line-up, this was a proper test for the full-brother to last year's G3 Geoffrey Freer S. winner Hukum (Ire) but the money was talking as he was forced into 10-11 favouritism. Anchored in rear of the classy five-runner field by a confident Jim Crowley throughout the early stages as another St James's Palace also-ran in Naamoos (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) set the pace, the William Haggas-trained homebred was eased by his peers heading to two out and after striking the front heading down into the “dip” powered clear for an emphatic four-length success without being asked a serious question. Maximal, who had been five lengths behind Poetic Flare at Royal Ascot, was second 1 1/4 lengths ahead of One Ruler, who had finished under five lengths behind the Bolger star in the Rowley Mile Classic.

After coming from way back to win on debut at Leicester June 7, Baaeed had showed the benefit of that experience to follow up in a more professional manner by 7 1/2 lengths in a novice over this course and distance 12 days later. Nobody's secret entering this examination, he was setting trainer William Haggas a quandary with his latest command performance. “People had told me after his second run that he was a good horse, so I ran him to see if he is and he looks it now,” he said. “He showed a good turn of foot and is quicker than his brother, who's a good horse but is a mile and a half horse. He is an exciting horse I think. His pedigree suggests that a mile and a quarter is what he wants, but the style of his racing doesn't say that. We will see. I don't think there is any hurry to step him up in trip at the moment. I thought it was a really good listed contest. For him to do that, come from the back and show a smart turn of foot is a good sign.”
“He has had three quite quick races, so I don't know what we do next,” Haggas continued. “The obvious race is the group 3 at Goodwood [the July 30 Thoroughbred S.], but that would be four races in two months and he's a young horse with his career in front of him. I don't want to milk him too early and we need to space his races out, with probably three more max this year. He needs to be looked after if he is to have a good 4-year-old career but he'll get entries in every smart race from now on.”

Jockey Jim Crowley added, “He has given me a very good feel. He has obviously progressed from his last run, but that is the first time I've ridden the horse and I was very impressed with him. He put the race to bed very quickly and he did everything right. This lad has more speed than Hukum, who is a very good horse. I would imagine he will be kept at a mile for now while he is winning races like that, but he will get further. He is well-bred and physically a nice horse, so hopefully he can keep going.”

The Listed Prix de Liancourt-winning dam Aghareed (Kingmambo) is proving a notable broodmare for the operation, with the aforementioned Hukum also successful in the Listed Tapster S. and third in the G2 Hardwicke S. this term and proving to be not far off the best middle-distance horses around. Aghareed, who has the unraced 2-year-old filly Zaghaareed (GB) (Intello {Ger}) and a yearling colt by Nathaniel (Ire) to come, was the only black-type performer out of the talented Lahudood (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}). She also took the Prix de Liancourt, but later achieved worldwide notoriety when capturing the GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf and GI Flower Bowl Invitational.
