Luxembourg Back On Top In Curragh Comeback

It may not have been the wide-margin success prohibitive odds of 2-9 might have implied beforehand, but Westerberg and Coolmore's G1 Futurity Trophy hero and G1 2000 Guineas third Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}–Attire {Ire}, by Danehill Dancer {Ire}) was on the comeback trail from his storied muscular woes in Saturday's G3 Fitzdares Royal Whip S. at the Curragh and not only proved his wellbeing, but much, much more with an impressively game performance in the card's 10-furlong feature. The day's star attraction was allowed find his own rhythm and stalked the leading trio within comfortable range from the outset. Inching forward into third approaching the quarter-mile pole, he quickened in style to seize control with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and rallied gamely under drive when joined by Insinuendo (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) in the latter stages, regaining a neck advantage from that older rival in the dying strides. Insinuendo, in turn, finished 4 1/4 lengths clear of the winner's stablemate Realism (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in third.

“We didn't think he'd ever get here, so we're very relieved,” admitted Aidan O'Brien after registering an 11th triumph in the contest. “We thought that he had no chance of running after what happened to him. Everyone did a great job to get him over his first mishap and he was off for a long time. It wasn't smooth with him when he came back and Jamie, who looks after him, did an incredible job. Our eye was on the [G1] Irish Champion and you couldn't go to there without a run and this was the only place we could run. The track was beautiful, it's very difficult to have ground the way it is in this heat, so hats off to the Curragh. First time back we didn't want a grueller because he was only ready to start. It was brilliant really because they didn't go too fast and he had to quicken and run hard for the last two [furlongs], which he'd want to do before going into a big championship race. He's a horse that can go a very high tempo and quicken off it. He quickened today off a slow pace and we know a strong tempo brings out the best in him. Ryan [Moore] said he moved up, got there and just shut down. He's used to doing that in his work, just getting there and coming with horses. We were only going to have one race to sharpen him and then we could take him home and get the rest. I can't tell you how delighted we are with him. Ryan was very good on him. He had to wake him up, make him get down and do it without being too serious on him. He was brilliant at that and he found when he had to find. Going to the line he was coasting again. I thought he would improve 20 to 30 percent from today and, hopefully, now he comes out of it okay.”

Luxembourg, who went perfect through a three-race juvenile campaign which included a win in the G2 Beresford S., is one of his sire's 10 elite-level winners and the leading performer for Attire (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). The March-foaled bay is kin to G2 Mooresbridge S. victor Leo De Fury (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and dual Group 3 third Sense Of Style (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}). Galileo’s Changingoftheguard Gets Royal Winner Number 80 For Aidan O’Brien

All the rage for Friday's G2 King Edward VII S., Changingoftheguard (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) issued a display of resolute galloping in the Westerberg silks to make it a landmark 80th Royal Ascot winner for Aidan O'Brien. Fifth in the Derby only 13 days ago, the G3 Chester Vase winner was taken to the lead by Ryan Moore soon after the start and was asked several questions on the long journey to the home straight, but kept responding to pressure to see off all bar the Derby 11th Grand Alliance (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}). Whereas the run to the line was straight and true for the heavily-backed 11-10 favourite, the Charlie Fellowes trainee was off on a tangent and drifting left with Danny Tudhope in the closing stages. That meant that when the moment of truth came, the short-head verdict went the way of the Ballydoyle runner, with a four-length margin back to Lysander (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) in third.

Following on from the successes of Kyprios (Ire) and Magical Lagoon (Ire) on Thursday, Changingoftheguard was supplying his remarkable late sire with a Royal Ascot treble in 2022 and puts him one behind his great rival Dubawi (Ire). John Magnier was on hand to witness the latest Galileo to lay down a particular milestone. “The secret's out,” he quipped in his inimitable manner. “It's well-known and well-discussed that Galileos have their will to win and it's coming through with his sons and daughters. It is all over the place really.” When asked about the now 899 group winners for Aidan O'Brien, he reflected, “That does the talking–he doesn't have to do it. It's refreshing to see a modest approach, I think. You see it with Chris Waller too. Their records show it.”

Aidan O'Brien said of the winner, “Changingoftheguard is a tough hardy horse–very genuine and he'll stay further. We think the horse might be very happy going the St Leger trip. He doesn't surrender.” Moore added, “He was not at his best today–he was having a look and wasn't focused. The runner-up has run across the track, but I needed a bit of help really. He is a very honest horse, but he just gallops. He could have done with a bit of company and he wasn't getting a lot of it, so we were sitting ducks but he does have that bit of class.”

Fellowes said of the runner-up, “To have a really good one for the Roys is fantastic. They have been supporters of mine for quite a long time now and the lads have done such a great job with the horse. He is not straightforward. He has his own ideas about the game, but he's very talented and is a pleasure to have around the place. He'll have his day–it's not today, but he will. The St Leger has been mentioned. Whether he'll stay that far, I don't know.”

Changingoftheguard's dam Lady Lara (Ire) (Excellent Art {GB}) registered five wins in stakes company, with the pinnacle being the GII Honey Fox S. and GIII My Charmer H. The fourth dam Dancing Rocks (GB) (Green Dancer) captured the G2 Nassau S. before producing three black-type winners headed by the Listed Cheshire Oaks winner and G1 Yorkshire Oaks-placed Rockerlong (GB) (Deploy {GB}), while she is also the ancestress of seven group one winners including the 2000 Guineas-winning sire Footstepsinthesand (GB), as well as the European champion Superstar Leo (Ire) (College Chapel {GB}) whose wins featured the G3 Norfolk S. at this meeting. Lady Lara's unraced 2-year-old Galileo's Compass (Ire) is, as his name suggests, a full-brother to Changingoftheguard who was bought by BBA Ireland for Yulong Investments for €250,000 at the Goffs Orby, while she also has a filly foal by Wootton Bassett (GB).

New Bay’s Saffron Beach Wins The Duke of Cambridge

Wednesday's G2 Duke of Cambridge S. offered another episode of stalls drama that seems to have dogged the first two days of Royal Ascot, but by the time Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) had come home alone there was a sense that Sibila Spain (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) would have needed wings had she not been removed from the contest after going down in the gates. Making her European return under a five-pound penalty due to her winning exploits in Newmarket's G1 Sun Chariot S. in October, the Jane Chapple-Hyam-trained 5-2 joint-favourite gifted William Buick an easy task from the time the field left behind the withdrawn Sibila Spain. Helped by the target of Novemba (Ger) (Gleneagles {Ire}) dead ahead, the chestnut who was last seen finishing fourth in the G1 Dubai Turf S. at Meydan Mar. 26 slid by passing the three-furlong marker and was soon beyond recall. At the line, she rated as the second widest-margin winner so far at the meeting with a 3 1/2-length verdict over the outsider Thunder Beauty (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}), with Primo Bacio (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}) a further head away in third. “We were going slow, but she got into a nice rhythm. I wanted to get there in good time and not turn it into a two-furlong sprint, but she won very well and it was straightforward for her,” Buick said.

Saffron Beach had won the G3 Oh So Sharp S. at Newmarket in October 2020 before finishing second to Sacred (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) in the seven-furlong G3 Nell Gwyn S. and to Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) in the 1000 Guineas last Spring. Getting it together in the G3 Atalanta S. at Sandown last August and the Sun Chariot, she had failed to fire at Meydan but her trainer had worked on having her at fever-pitch for this. “It is hard going to Dubai off a winter break,” Chapple-Hyam explained. “She was up against hardened colts and geldings and it showed in the finish. We didn't have a prep race, whereas here we went to Chelmsford and the July Course to get the work into her. I presume it will be the [G1] Prix Rothschild [at Deauville] on August 2, the Sun Chariot at Newmarket, and then the Breeders' Cup.”

Jason Kelly, assistant to David O'Meara, said of the runner-up who outran her 40-1 odds. “Thunder Beauty has run a great race. We'll probably drop back to seven furlongs. There is the [G3] Oak Tree Stakes at Goodwood and that will be high on the agenda. She is a high-class filly and is versatile ground-wise. She was big odds and we thought Saffron Beach would be handy so, instead of getting into a duel early, we thought we'd take our time and challenge late. She is probably slightly better over seven furlongs, so we wanted to make sure she got home. It was a super run. My uncle David Kelly owns her and we are creeping up. She was listed-placed last year, then group three-placed and now we are group two-placed.”

Primo Bacio was regaining some form after a lean spell and trainer Ed Walker said, “Finally she has got her ground! This race was a bit of an afterthought really, so we are hoping there will be improvement to come. I did not think we'd get here, but she worked really well and, due to a lack of alternative options, we thought let's have a go. On that basis, you have to be super happy with that. I think she would have been a clear second if she was A1. I think we will go to the [G1] Falmouth, as she ran so well in it last year.”

Saffron Beach, who cost a mere 55,000gns at the 2018 Tattersalls December Foal Sale, is out of Falling Petals (Ire) (Raven's Pass) who was sold by Godolphin to the China Horse Club for €235,000 at the 2016 Goffs November Mares Sale. She is a half-sister to the G1 Middle Park S. third Huntdown (Elusive Quality), whose full-sister Continua produced the G3 World Trophy S. and G3 Molecomb S.-winning sire Cotai Glory (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}). The third dam Eternal Reve (Diesis {GB}) annexed the G3 Matron S. and was runner-up in the G1 Coronation S. here and is connected to the leading sire Miswaki. Falling Petals' unraced 2-year-old filly Providenciales (Ire) (Australia {GB}) was a 450,000gns purchase by Blandford Bloodstock at the Book 1 Sale, while she also has a yearling full-brother and foal full-sister to Saffron Beach.
