Dark Angel’s Barefoot Angel Springs 20-1 Shock At Ayr

Richard Fahey trainee Barefoot Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}–Love In The Desert {GB}, by Lemon Drop Kid) bettered an Aug. 1 debut second at Ripon with an Aug. 25 breakthrough at Carlisle and continued on the rise with an impressive tally at long odds in Saturday's G3 Virgin Bet Firth Of Clyde Fillies' S. at Ayr, her third straight start at the six-furlong trip. The 20-1 outsider was held up in rear through the initial stages of this stakes bow. Slicing through the pack to go sixth passing the quarter-mile pole, she quickened to the front with 150 yards remaining and was ridden out to prevail by a neck from Believing (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) for a career high.

Barefoot Angel becomes the 53rd pattern-race winner for her sire (by Acclamation {GB}) and the first out of Listed Empress S. third Love In The Desert (Lemon Drop Kid), herself kin to G3 Clasico Cesar del Rio runner-up Andeluna (Mineshaft) and to the dam of six black-type performers headed by the multiple stakes-winning Roy's Revenge (Ven) (League Of Nations). Barefoot Angel's third dam Brackish (Alleged), a half-sister to GI Matron S.-winning blue hen Fall Aspen (Pretense), produced a trio of stakes winners headed by G1 Derby Italiano runner-up Merzouk (Theatrical {Ire}). Love In The Desert's fourth foal is a yearling filly by Invincible Army (Ire).

Ayr Meeting Abandoned

Wednesday’s meeting at Ayr was abandoned after the fourth race after heavy rain was found to have caused patches of false ground. The Scottish track had received more than an inch of rain on Tuesday and it continued to fall during the afternoon on Wednesday, causing conditions to deteriorate.

“Jockeys came in after the third race and reported they felt a bit of false ground,” Clerk of the Course Graeme Anderson told Racing TV. “We had a look but it just seemed to be a wetter area, a heavier patch. They came back in after race four and reported a couple of areas, one about the furlong-and-a-half mark and one about just the half-furlong. We had a look. They were pretty deep holes, just really heavy ground. We’d had eight millimetres since 12:30 [Wednesday] on top of 28mm [Tuesday]. It’s been relentless so it’s taken its toll.”

The card’s last five races were abandoned.

“It’s right in the centre,” Anderson added. “We looked at trying to run the races on the round course and abandon the sprint race, but there’s a fear you can’t avoid it during a race. It was better to be safe than sorry.

“It’s an area where we’ve never had a problem before. It just seems to be wetter than others and just holding water and the holes are starting to fill with the rain coming down. It’s going to ride false. I’m hoping it’s just a case of the amount of rain we’ve had and it’s nothing more than that, but we will definitely be investigating and see what caused it and see what it’s looking like. It’s two weeks on Monday for our next meeting and then the Gold Cup meeting about three and a half weeks after that.”

Freshman Sire Pride of Dubai Off the Mark at Ayr

Coolmore-based sire Pride of Dubai (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) became the latest European freshman off the mark when the twice-raced juvenile Star of Emaraaty (Ire) survived a stewards’ enquiry to prevail in Monday’s EBF Stallions Fillies’ Novice Auction S. over an extended seven furlongs at Ayr. In front throughout, the 2-1 second favourite came under ever-increasing pressure inside the final quarter mile and was ridden out in the closing stages to deny Party Spirit (GB) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) by a neck.

STAR OF EMARAATY (IRE) (f, 2, Pride of Dubai {Aus}–La Grande Elisa {Ire}, by Ad Valorem) shaped with promise when a June 7 debut second over six furlongs at Haydock, posting an 11th of 18 to Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) dropped to five for Royal Ascot’s June 20 G2 Queen Mary S. next time, and hit the lids ready for immediate control of this first try at seven furlongs. Scrubbed along when threatened approaching the quarter-mile marker, the 2-1 second favourite came under ever-increasing pressure thereafter and, despite instigating a stewards’ enquiry when drifting right inside the final furlong, was ridden out to hold the persistent presence of Party Spirit (GB) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) by a neck, becoming the first winner for her Coolmore Stud-based freshman sire (by Street Cry {Ire}). Kin to a yearling filly by Moohaajim (Ire), the February-foaled chestnut is the fourth of five foals and second scorer produced by a half-sister to MG1SW sire Rip Van Winkle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), G3 Premio Enrico Camici-winning sire Le Vie Infinite (Ire) (Le Vie Dei Colori {GB}) and to the dam of stakes-winning G1 Middle Park S. runner-up Fleet Review (War Front). Scottish Racing To Resume On June 22

Racing in Scotland will resume behind closed doors on June 22 with a meeting at Ayr. It will be the first meeting held in Scotland since a spectator-free card at Kelso on Mar. 16. Racing is Scotland’s second-most attended sport, supporting 3,400 full-time equivalent jobs and generating over £300 million annually for the Scottish economy.

Nick Rust, chief executive of the BHA, said, “I am very pleased that Scottish racing is returning safely from next Monday at Ayr racecourse, ensuring that our truly nationwide sport can resume in line with the protocols which have been working well since our resumption at Newcastle on June 1. It is a sign of horse racing’s preparedness that we are the first major sport to return in Scotland as the recovery from COVID-19 continues. We are extremely grateful for the support of the Scottish government in enabling this risk-managed return.”
