Awesome Slew Gets First Winner at Gulfstream

Ocala Stud-based Awesome Slew was represented by his winner at Gulfstream when Awesome Strong romped in his unveiling. Dispatched as the slight second choice at 7-5, Awesome Strong was away without incident from the rail and settled in third through a snappy :21.79 opening quarter. Taking control entering the far turn, the bay rolled clear in the lane to graduate in style by six lengths. Don't Answer (Uncaptured) was the runner-up.

The winner is a half to Bad Debt (Grand Reward), MSW & MGSP, $838,330. Pleasant Ring has not produced a foal since Awesome Strong, but was bred to Bucchero last term.

Girvin Leads 2022 Roster At Ocala Stud

Ocala Stud has set 2022 stud fees for its roster of 12 stallions for the upcoming breeding season, led by Girvin whose fee remains unchanged at $6,000 S&N. Also remaining unchanged from their 2021 fees are Seeking the Soul and Win Win Win who will both stand for $5,000 S&N.

Girvin, a leading 3-year-old of his crop, won the 2017 Haskell Invitational S. (G1) and registered back-to-back Graded stakes wins in annexing the Risen Star S. (G2) and the Louisiana Derby (G2). An earner of $1,624,392 on the racetrack and a winner from six to nine furlongs, Girvin is represented by well-received first yearlings this year, which included a $200,000 colt who was the co-highest-priced yearling for a freshman sire at the Fasig-Tipton July Sale.

Seeking the Soul, a Charles Fipke homebred, had an illustrious racing career, winning the 2017 Clark H. (G1), the 2018 Ack Ack S. (G3), and the 2019 Stephen Foster S. (G2). All told, he won or placed in eight Graded stakes, including runner-up finishes in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) and the $9 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational S. (G1), earning more than $3.4 million. His first foals arrive in 2022.

Win Win Win captured the Forego S. (G1) at Saratoga in 2020, defeating four Grade 1 winners. He set a new track record at three, winning the seven-furlong Pasco S. at Tampa Bay Downs in an eye-catching 1:20.89, running a 2 on the Ragozin Sheets. He hails from a deep Live Oak family and is a descendant of the influential Halo sire line. Standing as a partnership between Live Oak Stud, Airdrie Stud, and Ocala Stud, Win Win Win will see his first foals arrive in 2022.

Ransom The Moon Colt Tops OBS Open Yearling Sale

Hip No. 442, a son of Ransom the Moon consigned by Abbie Road Farm (Lisa McGreevy), Agent, went to Redwings for $170,000 to top the open session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2021 October Yearling Sale. The dark bay or brown colt is out of Bold Lady, by Aikenite, a half sister to Grade 1-placed stakes winner Mambo in Seattle.

  • Hip No. 406, a daughter of Awesome Slew consigned by Camelot Acres Racing and Sales, Agent, was sold to RiceHorse, Agent, for $100,000. The bay filly, a half sister to stakes winning OBS Yearling Sale graduate Hear My Prayer, is out of Additional Prayer, by Songandaprayer.
  • Hip No. 318, a daughter of Tunwoo consigned by Stuart Morris, Agent, went to Eddie Plesa, Agent for Karl & Cathi Glassman, for $85,000. The dark bay or brown filly, out of stakes winner Savingtime, by Kantharos, is a half sister to OBS Yearling Sale graduate Outfoxed, winner of two stakes in three starts including Gulfstream's recent FTBOA Florida Sire My Dear Girl Stakes.
  • S B M Training and Sales went to $70,000 for Hip No. 523, a son of Kantharos consigned by K P Sales, Agent. The bay colt, out of stakes winner Frisk Her, by Officer, is a half brother to graded stakes placed OBS graduate Takeoff.
  • Hip No. 287, Fortheloveofart, a son of Noble Bird consigned by Kim Harrison (Top Speed Farm), Agent, was sold to Moonshadow for $60,000. The bay colt is a half-brother to graded stakes winning OBS Yearling Sale graduate Jalen Journey, winner of the recent Grade 3 De Francis Memorial Stakes, out of Petunia Face, by Congrats.

For the session, 276 yearlings sold for a total of $5,173,500, compared with 258 bringing a total of $2,811,900 a year ago. The average price was $18,745, up 72 percent compared with $10,899 in 2020, while the median price was $15,000 double the $7,500 figure a year ago. The buyback percentage was 18.1 percent compared with 21.3 percent a year ago.

At Tuesday's Selected Yearling Sale, 108 horses sold for a total of $4,714,000, up 38.8 percent compared with 86 yearlings bringing $3,397,000 a year ago. The average price was $43,648, up 10.5 percent compared with $39,500 last year, while the median price was $32,000, rising 14.3 percent compared with $28,000 in 2020. The buyback percentage was 19.4 percent; it was 36.3 percent a year ago.

Hip No. 67, a son of Midnight Storm consigned by Abbie Road Farm (Lisa McGreevy), Agent, was sold to Elusive Thoroughbreds for $170,000 to top the Selected Sale of Yearlings. The dark bay or brown colt is out of stakes winner Sterling Madame, by Unbridled Energy.

The next item on the OBS agenda is the 2022 Winter Mixed Sale, including the Horses of Racing Age section, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 25 – 26.

Ocala Stud will welcome three new stallions in Grade 1-winning millionaires Win Win Win and Seeking the Soul who will both stand for $5,000 S&N, and also new is Dak Attack, a stakes-winning son of Ghostzapper, whose fee will be $2,500 S&N.

Girvin, a leading 3-year-old of his crop, captured the 2017 Grade 1 Haskell Invitational Stakes and registered back-to-back graded stakes in taking the G2 Risen Star Stakes and the G2 Louisiana Derby. Adios Charlie, a perennial leading sire in Florida, will stand for $4,000 S&N. The Sunshine State's No. 1 sire in 2019, Adios Charlie is a top five sire again in 2020. Also standing for $4,000 S&N are Jess's Dream who has first-crop 2-year-olds in 2020, Grade 1 winner Noble Bird who will be represented by first 2-year-olds in the coming year, and The Big Beast, Florida's second-ranked first-crop sire of 2019 who is represented this year by stakes winner Hear My Prayer, as well as stakes winner and Grade 1-placed Up in Smoke.
