Justify’s Awesome Result Remains Perfect at Kyoto

11th-Kyoto, ¥42,190,000 ($284,065), Allowance, 4yo/up, 1900m, 1:57.4, ft.
AWESOME RESULT (f, 4, Justify–Blossomed, by Deputy Minister), a maiden winner in a single juvenile appearance in 2022, was perfect in her three trips to the races last season, including a victory over 2100 metres at Tokyo Nov. 18. A touch unprepared at the break of this 4-year-old return, the bay was accordingly off a half-step slowly and was consigned to the latter third of the field for the run around the first turn. Yutaka Take slipped her some rein and asked her to improve into about midfield down the backstretch, and she sustained that rally to draw closer at the 600-meter pole. Forced to cover significant ground, Awesome Result nevertheless came to win the race a furlong from home and outslugged the SW & G1SP second favorite Hapi (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) to remain unbeaten by 3/4 of a length while in receipt of nine pounds from the runner-up. “I did not ask her for much in the early stages and she had no problem handling the kickback,” said Take. “She responded very well when we turned for home, but she lost a bit of focus when she hit the front. With only five career starts, she has lots of room for improvement.” Gabriel Duignan's Springhouse Farm purchased the unraced Blossomed for $425,000 in foal to Honor Code at the 2018 Keeneland November sale a few months after the mare's 2-year-old daughter Sippican Harbor (Orb, $262,650) upset the GI Spinaway S. at Saratoga. She is also the dam of GSP Bodacious Babe (Mineshaft)–whose daughter Royal Spa (Violence) was second in the American Beauty S. Feb. 3–and Ju Taro (Arrogate), a three-time winner in Japan. Blossomed, a half-sister to Grade III winner Cinemine (Mining), is also responsible for a 2-year-old full-brother to Awesome Result. Lifetime Record: 5-5-0-0, $459,989.

Justify Filly Looking For Another ‘Awesome Result’ in Japan

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Hanshin and Hakodate Racecourses:

Saturday, June 10, 2023
12th-HSN, ¥15,200,000 ($109k), Allowance, 3yo/up, 1800m
AWESOME RESULT (f, 3, Justify–Blossomed, by Deputy Minister) opened her account with a 2 1/2-length victory over this course and distance last November (see below, SC 7) and makes her return to the races here. Produced by a half-sister to GSW Cinemine (Mining) and to the stakes-winning dam of three-time Japanese winner Ju Taro (Arrogate), Awesome Results is herself kin to 2018 GI Spinaway S. upsetter Sippican Harbor (Orb) and to the Grade III-placed Bodacious Babe (Mineshaft). Jockey Yuga Kawada sits narrowly atop the jockeys' premiership on 66 wins–two better than Christophe Lemaire–and has the assignment Saturday. B-Orpendale/Chelston/Wynatt (KY)

Sunday, June 11, 2023
11th-HAK, Hakodate Sprint S.-G3, ¥77.3m ($556k), 3yo/up, 6fT
JASPER KRONE (c, 4, Frosted–Fancy Kitten, by Kitten's Joy), a $25,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $90,000 OBS March breezer, has punched well above his weight on this tough circuit and enters off back-to-back scores over easy ground, capped by a victory going 1000 meters at Niigata May 7. The colt's stakes-placed dam was purchased for $10,000 by Machmer Hall in a private transaction at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton February Sale. Fancy Kitten's current 2-year-old, Ngannou (Mendelssohn), fetched $120,000 at KEESEP last fall and is up to five furlongs in his work at Santa Anita. B-Machmer Hall & Godolphin (KY)

Justify Represented By First Japanese Winners

Coolmore America's Triple Crown-winning freshman sire Justify (Scat Daddy) was represented by his first two Japanese winners Saturday afternoon at Hanshin Racecourse, his 24th and 25th individual winners overall.

In the afternoon's opening event over 1800 meters, Kazumi Yoshida's 2-year-old colt Jovian, a debut second over the metric seven furlongs on Hanshin debut Nov. 19, stretched out successfully and validated 7-10 favoritism with a seven-length romp in gate-to-wire fashion. Bred in Kentucky by DS Stable LLC, Jovian is a son of Runway Doll (Majestic Warrior) and was purchased for $250,000 out of this year's OBS March Sale after breezing a furlong in :9 4/5. Jovian was ridden to victory by the visiting Cristian Demuro.

First-time starting juvenile filly Awesome Result repeated the dose about 90 minutes later. Sent off the 14-5 second betting choice over the same nine-furlong distance, the daughter of Blossomed (Deputy Minister) settled midfield through the opening half-mile and finished up nicely to graduate by 2 1/2 lengths, defeating the Demuro-ridden favorite Cours Mirabeau (Jpn), a son of successful young sire Drefong. A half-sister to GI Spinaway S. winner Sippican Harbor (Orb), Awesome Result is also kin to Bodacious Babe (Mineshaft), whose son Ju Taro (Arrogate) is already a three-time winner in Japan. Blossomed was acquired by Springhouse Farm in foal to Honor Code for $425,000 at Keeneland November two months after Sippican Harbor's upset at Saratoga in 2018. Read more in Sunday's TDN.

Mor Spirit Colt, $700K Juvenile, Set For Hanshin Debut

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this Saturday running at Hanshin Racecourse. Sunday's focus is on Tokyo Racecourse which hosts the G1 Longines Japan Cup and features some of Japan's best middle-distance horses taking on four talented runners from Europe. Read our preview here:

Saturday, November 26, 2022
4th-HSN, ¥13,400,000 ($96k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1800m
TILL DAWN (c, 2, Mor Spirit–Follow My Tail, by Indian Charlie) is the first Japanese starter for his freshman sire, by the expat sire and now Japan-based Eskendereya. A half-brother to the New Mexico-bred MSP Proofsinthepuddin (Marking) and SP Red Raider (Roll Hennessy Roll), the Apr. 27 foal was a $160,000 Fasig-Tipton July yearling last summer who matured into the priciest of Mor Spirit's first-crop juveniles (30 sold, 37 ring) when hammering to trainer Hideyuki Mori for $700,000 at OBS March (:9 4/5). There is pedigree to boot, as the colt's second dam is European Group 3 winner and U.S. listed winner Freefourracing (French Deputy), herself responsible for a pair of black-type winners as well as the dam of SW/GSP Dance Code (Honor Code). B-Brad King (KY)

AWESOME RESULT (f, 2, Justify–Blossomed, by Deputy Minister) looks to become the eighth winner from nine to the races for her dam, whose daughter Sippican Harbor (Orb) upset the 2018 GI Spinaway S. at Saratoga and was sold to Springhouse Farm for $425,000 in foal to Honor Code at the Keeneland November Sale a couple of months later. Blossomed is also the dam of Grade III-placed Bodacious Babe (Mineshaft), who is responsible for the talented Japanese-based Ju Taro (Arrogate), winner of three of his seven starts and a latest five-length allowance scorer over this dirt track Nov. 13. B-Orpendale/Chelston/Wynatt (KY)
