Born To Sea’s Tulipa Chope Best In the Reservoirs

Having beaten the subsequent G3 Prix des Chenes winner Zabiari (GB) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in the Listed Criterium du FEE at Deauville in August, Alain Jathiere's Tulipa Chope (Fr) (Born To Sea {Ire}) took the next step up the ladder in her stride when returning to Normandy to capture Wednesday's G3 Prix des Reservoirs. Settled in behind the leader early by Theo Bachelot, the Stephane Wattel-trained bargain €5,000 Osarus September graduate was travelling best turning in and tanked her way to the front two out. Chased to the line by the Wertheimers' TDN Rising Star Aventure (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), the 2-1 second favourite had first run on that 17-10 market-leader and was not for catching as she registered a 1 1/4-length success.

“We intended to run her in the [G1 Prix Marcel] Boussac, but passed on it because I felt at that point that she was not as well as I would have hoped,” Wattel said of the winner, who was also third behind the subsequent Boussac third Les Pavots (Ire) (No Nay Never) in Vichy's Listed Prix des Jouvenceaux et des Jouvencelles in July. “After watching the Boussac, I had no regrets. She had been off since August and it is always a concern to return after such a long break, but her last piece of work was excellent so we hoped she would run well. You will see her again next year in the [G3] Prix de la Grotte.”

Pedigree Notes
Tulipa Chope is out of Tulipe Rouge (Fr) (Panis), who emanates from The Aga Khan's “V” family which features, among others, the G1 Prix de Diane heroine Valyra (GB) (Azamour {Ire}), the G1 Queen Anne S. and G1 Prix d'Ispahan hero Valixir (Ire) (Trempolino) and the GI Breeders' Cup Mile winner Val Royal (Fr) (Royal Academy). Her yearling filly Winne Chope (Fr) is by Gutaifan (Ire).

Sea The Stars Filly A New TDN Rising Star At Chantilly

Chantilly's Prix de Toutevoie for unraced 2-year-old fillies on Wednesday had an intriguing look to it beforehand and it did not disappoint as the Wertheimers' Aventure (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}–Balladeuse {Fr}, by Singspiel {Ire}) won impressively to earn TDN Rising Star status. Placed handy behind the early leaders by Stephane Pasquier, the Christophe Ferland-trained half-sister to the G1 Prix Vermeille winner Left Hand (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was committed passing the 300-metre marker and responded generously to put the contest to bed.

Strong to the line, the 41-5 shot had 3 1/2 lengths to spare over The Aga Khan's Siyandra (Ire) (Medaglia D'Oro), the daughter of the G1 Prix Saint Alary winner Siyarafina (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}) from the family of Siyouni (Fr). There was another neck back to the Andre Fabre-trained 6-4 favourite Solite (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), the other Wertheimer representative who is out of the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud scorer Plumania (GB) (Anabaa) and therefore a relative of the winner. Aventure is the 18th TDN Rising Star for Sea The Stars, whose tally includes the luminaries Sea The Moon (Ger), Crystal Ocean (GB), Star Catcher (GB) and Emily Upjohn (GB).

“She is a nice filly who was working well for this debut,” Ferland. “I said to Stephane to have her in the clear for the finish and to show her that he is the boss, because she can show some temperament in the mornings. She didn't this afternoon, so that is certainly a good sign, and we will see in time what we do with her this year.”

Aventure is the 10th foal out of the G2 Prix de Royallieu winner Balladeuse, whose aforementioned daughter Left Hand also took the G3 Prix de Psyche and was runner-up in the G1 Prix de Diane before producing the Listed Prix Melisande-winning fellow TDN Rising Star Left Sea (GB) (Frankel {GB}) who was also runner-up in the most recent edition of the Psyche. A winner on debut herself, Balladeuse's second-best progeny at present is Romanciere (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) who was placed in eight black-type contests including the G1 Prix Jean Romanet and her Listed Prix Charles Laffitte-winning full-sister Bilissie (GB).

Balladeuse is kin to the aforementioned G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud heroine and G1 Prix de Diane-placed Plumania (GB) (Anabaa), dam of the G2 Prix du Muguet scorer Plumatic (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), the G2 Prix d'Harcourt-placed Maniaco (GB) by Sea The Stars' half-brother Galileo (Ire) and G2 Prix Greffulhe-placed Starmaniac (GB) by Sea The Stars himself. She is also the second dam of the Listed Prix Zarkava winner and G1 Prix Saint-Alary-placed Solsticia (Ire) (Le Havre {Ire}) and the G3 Prix Belle de Nuit-placed Solania (GB) (Zoffany {Ire}).

Other half-siblings of Balladeuse are the listed-placed Dancequest (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), dam of the G3 Prix de Guiche winner Flop Shot (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) and the group-placed Double Major (Ire) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}); and Secrete (Fr) by Sea The Stars' sire Cape Cross (Ire) who is responsible for the G2 Prix de la Nonette and G3 Prix Vanteaux scorer Rumi (Fr) (Frankel {GB}), Galileo's listed-winning Solage (GB) and the G3 Prix Noailles-placed Normandy Eagle (Ire) by Flop Shot's sire New Approach (Ire).

The third dam in this illustrious dynasty is Featherhill (Fr) (Lyphard), a half to the champion filly Indian Rose (Fr) (General Holme) and sires Vert Amande (Fr) and Le Nain Jaune (Fr) who produced the operation's G1 Prix Lupin hero and leading sire Groom Dancer and fellow sires Tagel and Slew The Slewor. She is also the ancestress of the top-level winners Falco (Pivotal {GB}), Kinshasa No Kiseki (Aus) (Fuji Kiseki {Jpn}), Nettoyer (Aus) (Sebring {Aus}) and Absolutely (Aus) and Abbey Marie (Aus) by Redoute's Choice (Aus). Next up from this astoundingly successful family is Balladeuse's yearling Astropark (Ire) who is a full-brother to the winner.

Daughter of Siyarafina Debuts in Fascinating Chantilly Affair

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Wednesday's Insights features a daughter of G1 Prix Saint Alary winner Siyarafina (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}) at Chantilly.

12.50 Chantilly, Debutantes, €50,000, 2yo, f, 8fT
SIYANDRA (IRE) (Medaglia d'Oro) is the first foal out of The Aga Khan's G1 Prix Saint Alary winner Siyarafina (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}), who was out of a listed-winning and dual group-placed half-sister to the owner-breeder's sire sensation Siyouni (Fr) and the G1 Sun Chariot S. and GI E. P. Taylor S. heroine Siyouma (Ire) (Medicean {GB}). Francis-Henri Graffard has charge of the March-foaled homebred, whose peers include Ecurie Jean-Louis Bouchard's Million Miles Away (Fr) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), a Pascal Bary-trained daughter of the G1 Prix de Diane heroine Channel (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}) bought for €400,000 at last year's Arqana Deauville August; and a Wertheimer pair in the Christophe Ferland-trained Aventure (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), a half to the G1 Prix Vermeille winner Left Hand (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), and the Andre Fabre-trained Solite (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), a daughter of the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud scorer Plumania (GB) (Anabaa) and a full-sister to the G2 Prix du Muguet winner Plumatic (GB).

15.05 Sandown, Novice, £12,000, 2yo, 7fT
DUKE'S COMMAND (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) cost Godolphin 1.6million gns at last year's Tatts Book 1, with his dam being a daughter of the revered Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and therefore a full-sister to the Classic heroines Minding (Ire), Tuesday (Ire) and Empress Josephine (Ire). Connections will be buoyed by the fact that Minding's Dubawi colt Henry Longfellow (Ire) placed himself in the elite of his generation in the recent G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. and Charlie Appleby opts for a track that he often sends his better juveniles to.

14.30 Sandown, Mdn, £10,000, 2yo, 8fT
DAMBUSTER (GB) (Kingman {GB}) was a 750,000gns buy-back by his breeder Chasemore Farm at Tatts Book 1 and is now one of Andrew Balding's Kingsclere stable as he prepares for his debut. A full-brother to the G3 Prestige S. winner Boomer (GB), the relative of The Cheka (Ire) (Xaar {GB}) meets a rare Shadwell runner for the Harry Eustace stable in Muttasil (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), a colt from the immediate family of Tamayuz (GB).

HOW THEY FARED

19.00 Newcastle, Novice, £6,600, 2yo, f, 6fT
Leveret (Ire) (Invincible Army {Ire}) may have had the pedigree, being a half-sister to the recent GI Beverly D S. heroine Fev Rover (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}), but was not expected to make waves on this debut at 33-1. Belying those odds despite a tardy break, the Manister House Stud homebred finished off strongly to be runner-up which augurs well for her future.
