Spanish Loveaffair Meets Madone in Autumn Miss

It an East versus West match-up in the GIII Autumn Miss S. at Santa Anita Saturday when Spanish Loveaffair (Karakontie {Jpn}) meets Madone (Vancouver {Aus}). Runner-up in the GIII Regret S. at Churchill May 29, Spanish Loveaffair faded to eighth in the July 10 GI Belmont Oaks Invitational S. and was fourth in Saratoga's GII Lake Placid S. over a yielding course Aug. 21. She enters off a win in the Pebbles S. at Belmont Sept. 19.

Winner of the GIII Senorita S. earlier this year, Madone captured the GII San Clemente S. July 24. The dark bay rallied for fifth in the GI Del Mar Oaks Aug. 21 and filled the same spot in the Jockey Club Oaks Invitational S. at Belmont Sept. 18.

Peter Miller saddles a filly on the rise in Zero Tolerance (Mizzen Mast). Rallying from well back to miss by just a nose on debut at Del Mar Aug. 1, the gray graduated on dirt next out there Aug. 20 and captured the grassy Unzip Me S. at Santa Anita Oct. 3.

Equibase Analysis: Zero Tolerance The One To Beat In Autumn Miss

This Saturday's Grade 3, $100,000 Autumn Miss Stakes at Santa Anita Park brings together a field of eight 3-year-old fillies traversing a mile on the turf. Six of the eight have won either their most recent race or the one right before that and all eight fillies have been stakes placed at least once to date.

  • Madone is the most accomplished in terms of earnings at $367,800 with some of that earned when winning the G2 San Clemente Stakes at this mile turf trip in July.
  • Spanish Loveaffair is also a graded stakes winner, having captured the G3 Herecomesthebride Stakes in February and more recently the non-graded Pebbles Stakes last month in New York.
  • Zero Tolerance stretches out to a mile off a win in the Unzip Me Stakes over the course just 27 days ago and is tied for the most lightly raced filly in the field, having run just three times.
  • Ego Trip (IRE) is the other filly making just her fourth career start and finished third in the G2 Lake Placid Stakes in August, which was her most recent race.
  • Eddie's New Dream finished second in the Melair Stakes on dirt in June and recently won strongly on the grass, while Freedom Flyer missed by a head in the California Oaks this past April.
  • Burgoo Alley (IRE) was third behind Zero Tolerance in the Unzip Me and also stretches out, having won at a mile on turf just before that.
  • Javanica missed by less than a length in the G3 Jimmy Durante Stakes and by the same margin in the Blue Norther Stakes last November and December, and returns from two months off following a sixth place effort in the G1 Del Mar Oaks.

I believe strongly Zero Tolerance is the one to beat in this year's Autumn Miss Stakes, even over multiple stakes winner Madone. Zero Tolerance missed by a nose in a big effort when rallying from eighth of 10 in her career debut this past August in a sprint. Improving nicely 19 days later, she won on dirt then moving back to turf for the Unzip Me Stakes on Oct. 3 at the distance of six and one-half furlongs on turf. In that race, Zero Tolerance rallied from sixth of seven in the early stages to win going away. That effort earned her a career best 98 ™ Equibase® Speed Figure and logical improvement in only the fourth start of her career puts her at, or above, the 104 field high figures Spanish Loveaffair earned winning the Pebbles Stakes and the 104 figure Madone earned winning the San Clemente Stakes.

There is no doubt in my mind Zero Tolerance can stretch out to a mile and run a winning race, given her dam Torreadora also produced multiple stakes winner El Tormenta, who won the 2019 Grade 1, $1 million Woodbine Mile Stakes. Santa Anita leading jockey Flavien Prat was in the saddle as Zero Tolerance won her last two race and rides back and that is another reason this filly gets top billing in this situation.

Madone has won five of nine races in her careen, including two of three on the Santa Anita turf and four of eight stakes tries. Her best career effort came in July when winning the San Clemente Stakes at the distance of the Autumn Miss and earning a career-best 104 ™ figure. However, her most recent two races were some of her poorest efforts, first when fifth in the Del Mar Oaks, then when fifth in the Jockey Club Oaks Invitational last month in New York. Then again, neither of those was a mile, the distance of the San Clemente which Madone returns to. Additionally, the Del Mar Oaks was a Grade 1 race and although not yet graded, the Jockey Club Oaks is going to be a Grade 1 race in the future. As such, the drop to this G3 level and the return to a mile and to a turf course she has had success over in the past bode well for Madone regaining top form.

Honorable mention goes to Burgoo Alley (IRE) and Javanica, and I would consider both for any exacta tickets played. Burgoo Alley (IRE) won at Santa Anita in a turf sprint this past June, in her second start since importing from Ireland. She stretched out to two turns next and ran two “A” races in a row, first beaten a head with a 101 figure then winning an allowance race at a mile with a stakes quality 103 figure. She then stumbled at the start of the Unzip Me to be last of seven, rushed up to third, fell back to fifth, then re-rallied for third.

Javanica finished second in a pair of stakes last fall and winter on this circuit with big efforts then tried dirt in the Santa Anita Oaks. When that experiment failed, she moved back to grass for the Senorita Stakes at a mile on turf in May but ran into a ton of traffic trouble and was eventually moved up from sixth to fifth after another horse was disqualified for interference. Returning in July, Javanica earned a career-best 101 figure with a win then faded to fifth after leading from the start in the Del Mar Oaks. Freshened again, she has potential to run as well as she did in July and could be a contender.

The rest of the field, with their best ™ Equibase Speed Figures, is Eddie's New Dreams (86), Ego Trip (94), Freedom Flyer (88) and Spanish Loveaffair (104).

Eastern Invaders Spice Autumn Miss Field At Santa Anita

Lightly raced Zero Tolerance will stretch out and face graded stakes competition for the first time and could pose an elusive front-running target among a talented field of eight sophomore fillies going one mile on turf in Saturday's Grade 3, $100,000 Autumn Miss Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

Among those also figuring prominently in the Autumn Miss are Irish-breds Ego Trip and Burgoo Alley, along with Spanish Loveaffair and Madone.

Based at San Luis Rey Downs with Peter Miller, Zero Tolerance comes off an impressive one-length tally going 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside turf course in the ungraded Unzip Me Stakes Oct. 3. With leading man Flavien Prat back aboard, she figures to be sent from her outside post in what will be her first two-turn assignment.

A nose shy of being unbeaten in three starts, she broke her maiden two races back, winning by a half length going six furlongs on dirt.  By Mizzen Mast out of the El Prado mare Torreadora, Zero Tolerance is owned by Custom Truck Accessories, Jason Hall, Joe Kelly and Michael Riordan.

Although she's winless in three starts, Ego Trip has kept good company while defeating 21 combined runners in England and New York.  Second in a field of 13 in her seven furlong debut on synthetic at Newcastle on March 16, she closed much ground while running a close second in a one mile maiden special weight at Saratoga July 24.  Trained by Brendan Walsh and owned by Rebecca Hillen, she was subsequently third, beaten four lengths in the G2 Lake Placid Stakes going 1 1/16 miles over a yielding turf at Saratoga on Aug. 21 at odds of 3-1.

With Del Mar's G1, one mile turf Matriarch Stakes on Nov. 21 likely on the minds of many entering the Autumn Miss, Ego Trip ships in fresh from Keeneland for Walsh and gets the services of Victor Espinoza in her Southern California debut.

Third, beaten 1 ¼ lengths by Zero Tolerance as the 8-5 favorite in the Unzip Me Stakes Oct. 3, Burgoo Alley will be making her first graded stakes appearance on Saturday.  Winless in three starts in her native Ireland, Burgoo Alley, who is trained by Phil D'Amato, broke her maiden in her second stateside start going six furlongs on turf here June 21 and took a first condition allowance two starts back going one mile on grass at Del Mar Aug. 14.

Hard-hitting Burgoo Alley, who broke a bit slowly and then stumbled slightly a few jumps out of the gate in the Unzip Me, will be ridden for the sixth consecutive time by Umberto Rispoli and rates a huge chance.

Trained by Mark Casse, Spanish Loveaffair, who was a troubled fourth, beaten three quarters of a length by Ego Trip two starts back in the G2 Lake Placid at Saratoga, comes off the best race of her career—a 2 ¼ length score going one mile on turf in the ungraded Pebbles Stakes at Belmont Park on Sept. 19, a race in which she earned an 88 Beyer Speed Figure.  A G3 stakes winner with three wins from five tries at a mile on grass, Spanish Loveaffair has an outstanding resume and has earnings of $264,090.

Owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Michael Hernon and Gary Barber, Spanish Loveaffair is by Karakontie and is out of the Unusual Heat mare Spanish Bunny.  A three-time stakes winner, she'll be making her first Southern California start with Abel Cedillo as she tries to improve upon an overall mark of 10-3-2-0.

A four-time stakes winner, the Simon Callaghan-trained Madone has posted five wins from six tries on turf and is the leading money earner in the field with $367,800.  Most recently fifth going 1 3/8 miles on turf in the ungraded Jockey Club Invitational Oaks at Belmont Park Sept. 18, she was a solid fifth two starts back in the G1 Del Mar Oaks going 1 1/8 miles on turf Aug. 21.

A winner of Del Mar's G2 San Clemente Stakes going one mile on turf three starts back, she'll be reunited with Juan Hernandez, who also guided her to victory in the G3 Senorita Stakes five races back here at Santa Anita on May 1.

Owned by Kaleem Shah, Inc., Madone is by the Medaglia d'Oro stallion Vancouver and is out of the Cherokee Run mare Indian Love Call.  Proven as a deep closer, she's also proven effective sitting close to the pace.  With five wins from nine starts, Madone will be bidding for her third graded stakes victory.

From Teenage Years With Hirsch Jacobs To 1,000-Win Milestone, Lewis ‘Fortunate’ And ‘Grateful

Craig Lewis did a little bit of celebrating Saturday night after Warren's Showtime won Saturday's Grade 3 Autumn Miss Stakes at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., to give the 73-year-old trainer career victory No. 1,000.

He watched a baseball game and a boxing match on TV, then it was business as usual and he was back on the beat early Sunday morning.

“I stayed up till 10 o'clock,” said Los Angeles native Lewis, who began training in 1978 and who holds a bachelor's degree in history from Cal Berkeley.

“I was a little disappointed early yesterday when we ran second with the first two horses I ran (Warrens Candy Man in the first race and Dancing Dana in the fourth), but I guess we won the one that mattered and it kind of worked out well.”

Lewis started in racing as a teenager, learning the ropes under legendary Hall of Fame trainer Hirsch Jacobs, who claimed the iron horse Stymie for $1,500 as a 2-year-old. Stymie would go on to run in an amazing 135 races, winning 35 and also earn Hall of Fame recognition.

Not only did Lewis win a graded stakes for his milestone victory, he trained both the sire (Clubhouse Ride) and the dam (Warren's Veneda) of Warren's Showtime, both multiple stakes winners in their own right.

“I've been very fortunate,” Lewis said after the victory. “I've had a lot of great horses in my career. Cutlass Reality beat back to back Derby winners Alysheba and Ferdinand in the (1988) Hollywood Gold Cup, Music Merci, winner of the (1988) Del Mar Futurity and (1989) Illinois Derby, and many other big races, and of course Larry the Legend (game winner of the 1995 Santa Anita Derby).

“I've had multiple other good horses and a lot of great owners. I'm very thankful and feel very fortunate, very grateful, to be in this situation.”

Said winning owner/breeder Benjamin Warren: “This is just wonderful and it's great that this is Craig's 1,000th win. This puts her at $500,000 in earnings at age three and that's pretty good. … I went partners with (former Major League baseball star) Irv Noren on my first horse in 1980, so to have this filly doing this well is tremendous.”

Warren's Showtime was fifth of seven early in the Autumn Miss but responded to strong urging by Flavien Prat to win by a neck as the 7-10 favorite. Victory didn't come easy.

“What was going through my mind was she might not get there,” Lewis admitted. “But as usual she did not disappoint. She's really a genuine filly who gives it every time.”

That usually results in a happy ending, none so happy as yesterday.
