Doctor Dino Colt Leads at Arqana Autumn

A €170,000 Doctor Dino (Fr) colt set a new record price for a NH-bred yearling at this sale as the Arqana Autumn Sale proper concluded on Tuesday. Buyers' appetites remained keen overall, with eight yearlings bringing €77,000 or higher.

Consigned by Haras des Sablonnets, lot 518 is out of the listed-placed jumper Lofte Place (Fr) (Poliglote {GB}), who has already provided the goods as a NH broodmare as the dam of three-time listed winner Thrilling (Fr) (Network {Ger}), who ran second in the G1 Prix Maurice Gillois and G1 Ferdinand Dufaure over fences. Anthony Bromley and David Minton's Highflyer Bloodstock secured the March-born colt, one of 13 yearlings purchased by the duo-mostly for Welsh owner Dai Walters (Walters Plant Hire)–on Tuesday for a gross of €697,000 and an average of €53,615.

“For me he was the best yearling in the sale,” said Minton. “He's by a great stallion in Doctor Dino and his half-sister Thrilling is a very good filly.”

Also snapped up by Highflyer in the top eight lots was lot 565, who went for €85,000 from the draft of The Channel Consignment. Another colt by Doctor Dino, he is out of the four-time winner Shannon Verse (Fr) (Kapgarde {Fr}) from the family of Grade 1 winner Shannon Rock (Fr) (Turgeon).

Rounding out the Highflyer trio amidst the priciest yearlings was lot 496, a son of No Risk At All (Fr) and the winning jumper Hojacaracois (Fr) (Laveron {GB}). Haras de l'Hotellerie offered the €77,000 acquisition, who is from the family of listed-winning jumpers Horabora Has (Fr) (Turgeon) and Hotmale Has (Fr) (Saint des Saints {Fr}).

Second on the buyers' sheets was lot 633, a son of Muhtathir (GB) and the Saint des Saints mare Carmen du Berlais (Fr). Picked up by Horse Racing Advisory for €90,000, the Ecurie la Frenee draftee's pedigree features Grade 3-winning chaser Caid du Berlais (Fr) (Westerner {GB}), who ran second in the G1 Future Champions Finale Juvenile Hurdle.

Authorized (Ire)'s lot 643 caught the eyes of Ryan Mahon and JD Moore at €85,000. A member of the Haras de l'Aumonerie consignment, the gelding is out of the two-time juvenile winner Courseulles (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}), while GIII Long Island H. victress Arles (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}) is the dam's full-sister.

“We really liked the horse,” said Ryan Mahon. “He had a very good attitude in the ring. I've bought him for an Irish client.”

By the same sire as lot 643, lot 632, from Haras des Pierres Follets, was purchased by JH Bloodstock/BLM Bloodstock for €77,000. The gelding's dam is a Poliglote half-sister to the Grade 3-placed hurdler Chef d'Oeuvre (Fr) (Martaline {GB}).

BLM Bloodstock had signed the ticket for lot 517 at €80,000 earlier in the sale. The son of Saint des Saints was produced by the Grade 1-placed Liberte d'Aimer (Fr) (Lord du Sud {Fr}) and consigned by Haras du Buff.

“Following the death of Jim Gordon, one of our clients bought the dam of this yearling, Liberté d'Aimer,” said Bertrand Le Metayer. “She has produced a lot of fillies, so we're delighted to have a boy! We've bought him for a partnership with the family of Jim Gordon.”

Listed bumper heroine Tante Sissi (Fr) (Lesotho)'s No Risk At All (Fr) AQPS colt (lot 585) went to Yorton/Tridynion for €82,000. Offered by Ecurie Cap Orne, the colt's dam is a full-sister to the top-class AQPS Grade 1 hurdler Epatante (Fr) (No Risk At All {Fr}).

“We loved this horse,” said Yorton's David Futter. “He has a great pedigree and his sire needs no introduction. We'll bring him back home and will decide his future in due course. We have lots of options. We're very happy with the purchase.”

The most expensive yearling filly on the day was lot 620, a Haras de Montaigu-consigned daughter of Beaumec de Houelle (Fr) who went to Midland Equine Ltd. for €72,000. From the family of listed winner Howard le Canard (Fr) (Hamas {Ire}), the bay was produced by the winning Best Exit (Fr) (King's Best).

At the end of the session, 134 yearlings had found new homes from 169 offered (79%) for an aggregate of €3,730,500. The average was €27,840 and the median was €20,000.

Overall, 291 horses sold over the two days from 367 offered (79%) for an aggregate of €9,218,500. The average was €31,679 and the median was €20,000.

Breeding stock will go under the hammer during the one-day Arqana Autumn – National Hunt Breeding Stock Sale on Wednesday from 11 a.m. local time.

Classic Winner Santiago to Stand Under Coolmore NH Banner

Classic winner Santiago (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}–Wadyhatta {GB}, by Cape Cross {Ire}) will stand under the Coolmore National Hunt banner at Castlehyde Stud in 2022. A fee for the G1 Irish Derby hero will be announced later.

“Santiago is a Derby winner with a pedigree full of Derby winners and leading sires,” said Coolmore's Cathal Murphy. “He's a big, quality individual with a fantastic action, and I'm sure National Hunt breeders will be very impressed when they see him.”

Purchased for €275,000 in utero at the Arqana July Sale in 2016, the Lynch Bages Ltd.-bred is a half-brother to two-time Group 1-placed filly La Joconde (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). A winner in three starts at two for the Coolmore partners and trainer Aidan O'Brien, the bay improved markedly at three, taking Royal Ascot's G2 Queen's Vase in June of 2020 and the Irish Derby at The Curragh just eight days later. He also ran third in the G1 Goodwood Cup in July of that year and was runner-up in the 2021 G2 Yorkshire Cup S. He sports a record of 11-3-3-1 and earnings of $714,737.

Dual Group 1 winner and veteran sire Tamayuz (GB) (Nayef) is under his stakes-placed third dam, while GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf entrant and G3 Killavullan S. hero Glounthaune (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) is out of a Nayef half-sister to his winning dam Wadyhatta. Other Group 1 winners in the family include Eshaada (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) and Anabaa Blue (GB) (Anabaa). Santiago's fourth dam is a half-sister to breed-shaping bluehen and G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe victress Urban Sea (Miswaki).

Santiago Camp Eyeing Goodwood Cup

G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby winner Santiago (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}) could clash with three-times G1 Ascot Gold Cup hero Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in next month’s G1 Qatar Goodwood Cup. Victorious in the 14-furlong G2 Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot, Santiago dropped back to a mile and a half at The Curragh just eight days later and fended off stablemate Tiger Moth (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) to take the Classic honours.

Aidan O’Brien’s charge is the ante-post favourite for the G1 St Leger at Doncaster in September, but the Ballydoyle handler has raised the possibility of taking on John Gosden’s star stayer Stradivarius over two miles first.

Stradivarius joined an elite band when making it a Gold Cup hat-trick at Royal Ascot and will be bidding for a fourth Goodwood Cup win, having landed his first title as a 3-year-old in 2017.

O’Brien said, “It could be straight to the St Leger, but we have it in our head he could go to Goodwood–we’ll just see how he is between now and then. We’ll give him a week before we have a good chat with the lads (Coolmore), so it will be straight to Doncaster or the two-mile race at Goodwood.

“It will depend on what the lads want, but we’ve always thought he was a horse who would stay very well and he showed that at Ascot. At The Curragh you have to stay very well as well. We had other horses in, so we knew it would be a test.”

Ballydoyle Get First Four As Santiago Strikes In the Irish Derby

It was labelled as wide-open, but in the end Saturday’s G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at The Curragh proved anything but as Aidan O’Brien was in dominating form yet again with Santiago (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}) leading home a remarkable stable one-two-three-four. Sent off the clear 2-1 favourite coming back eight days after his emphatic win in the G2 Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot, the bay was always travelling with supreme ease anchored towards the rear by a confident Seamie Heffernan. Cutting through the pack and getting an ideal split to arrive at the front two out, he was pushed all the way to the line by Tiger Moth (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) but toughed it out to prevail by a head, with five lengths back to Dawn Patrol (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and another 1 1/4 lengths to Order of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}).

Delivering a 14th renewal to his trainer and a fourth for his personal resume, Heffernan said, “I was always comfortable. He’s a tough horse–I would have liked to have had a better draw and a cleaner slot and I took a gamble in dropping him in, but if you go forward and you get trapped wide he’s a horse that gets competitive. I always wanted to switch him off and ride him for luck, because he’s a generous horse and it worked out. When I put him in gear, he picked up. He had been showing plenty at home, but what he had been showing at home was guts. He’s a lovely horse with a big heart and you can’t ask for any more.”

Santiago had started out with seconds over seven furlongs at Leopardstown and Galway last summer, the latter of which takes on an altogether different light coming behind Alpine Star (Ire) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) at the famed festival. Beating Sunchart (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) over a mile at Listowel in September, he was untried in the top latter-season tests and consequently arrived at Royal Ascot under the radar to all bar those closest to him tackling the Queen’s Vase. After dismissing the solid yardstick Berkshire Rocco (Fr) (Sir Percy {GB}) as the pair pulled clear in that 14-furlong contest, he was thrust into the limelight and then into the heat of this battle with the stable’s leading Galileos diverted to Epsom.

Travelling notably strongly in the final quintet with Heffernan happy to keep tabs on the Jim Bolger runner Fiscal Rules (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) dead ahead, the pace was kept honest courtesy of Iberia (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who was placed on the front to draw the potential sprint out of the race. As the field turned for home, there was a fanning out from the fence which gifted Heffernan the space he needed to emerge into contention and he was at the head of affairs as quickly as he had been at the Royal meeting last week passing the two pole. While everything in his immediate vicinity was instantly covered, out of range to his left was Tiger Moth with Emmet McNamara keeping him wide for his effort. It became a battle in the final furlong and for a brief spell it looked as if the 11-1 shot would provide his rider with a fairytale first Classic, but Santiago drew on that extra dimension to take the glory.

O’Brien, who had saddled the first three in this in 2002, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2014 and 2019, majors in humility at all times and was not breaking the pattern despite this incredible achievement. “They ran good races, so I’m delighted,” was his unassuming response to another milestone in his career. “Santiago is a lovely, straightforward horse who likes to take his time in his races and Seamus got a lovely run through. We thought he could be a Leger horse and I think that looks a lovely race for him, but we are going to look forward to him for next year too. He’s a lovely, clean-winded, honest horse.”

Tiger Moth had beaten Dawn Patrol and Order of Australia as O’Brien also saddled the first four home in a 10-furlong Leopardstown maiden June 9 that in this unusual season takes on the shape of a true Derby trial. Dawn Patrol met interference en route to finishing off strongly here and the Ballydoyle handler was understandably full of hope that they can also emerge as forces later on this term. “The next two are lovely horses and are two babies–they are progressing and in a month’s time we think they will be even better,” he added.

MV Magnier, speaking by Zoom videolink, added, “I’m delighted for Seamus. I didn’t realise that he’s 47, but he’s riding very well and has been working in Ballydoyle for a long time. He deserves it. The Irish Derby is the pinnacle of Irish racing. It is a stallion-making race and many great champions have won it over the years.”

Santiago, who becomes the first Classic winner for his sire, was bought in utero by Robert Nataf of Horse France as he purchased the 4-year-old filly Wadyhatta (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) for €275,000 at Arqana’s 2016 Summer Sale. The listed-placed second dam Thamarat (GB) (Anabaa) produced three black-type performers, including last year’s G1 Prix du Jockey Club third Motamarris (Ire) (Le Havre {Ire}) who looks a potential star this season, and the multiple listed-placed Riqa (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) who is in turn the dam of the G3 Prix de Cabourg, G3 Prix de Meautry and G3 Prix du Petit Couvert scorer Tantheem (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}).

Thamarat is a half-sister to the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois and G1 Prix Jean Prat-winning sire Tamayuz (GB) (Nayef), while the G3 Prix de Flore-winning fourth dam Allez Les Trois (Riverman) produced the G1 Prix du Jockey-Club hero and sire Anabaa Blue (GB) by Thamarat’s sire Anabaa. Allez Les Trois is kin to the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe heroine and incredible producer Urban Sea (Miswaki), which links Santiago back to the 2001 winner of this race, Galileo, as well as to Sea the Stars (Ire) who shares Cape Cross (Ire) as a sire with Santiago’s dam Wadyhatta. This is also the family of the brilliant G1 2000 Guineas hero and sire King’s Best, involving the dam line of the German-bred blue hen Allegretta (GB) (Lombard {Ger}). Wadyhatta’s as-yet unraced 2-year-old filly by Frankel (GB) named La Joconde (Ire) was purchased by the Broadhurst Agency for 850,000gns at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, while she also has a yearling filly by that sire.
