Australia: World’s Best Sprinter Nature Strip Returns At Randwick Friday

The Shorts (G2) – Key Prep for The Everest: Race 8 is a barn-burning renewal of a Group Two sprint named The Shorts, whose nine entrants boast a collective 76 wins from 165 starts. It features no fewer than six confirmed runners for The Everest, the world's richest race on turf, which will be run at Randwick on October 15. The Everest (6 furlongs) has a slot-holder format, and the following entrants for The Shorts (5-1/2 furlongs) have guaranteed berths in The Everest:

#1 Nature Strip (3-2 fav.) was Horse of the Year in the 2019/20 season and is currently the world's highest-ranked sprinter. In his 7-year-old debut two weeks ago, he blistered the last three furlongs in 32.62 seconds, winning a G3 five-furlong race.

#2 Eduardo (7-1), #3 Gytrash (13-1), #4 Masked Crusader (7-2) and #5 Rothfire (9-2) are all Group One winners.

#7 Lost and Running (6-1) has raced only seven times and never at Group level, but created a huge impression while progressing through restricted grades earlier this year.

Early Market Mover: Race 8 #5 Rothfire has been sidelined for a year since sustaining a potentially career-ending injury, when favorite and looking the likely winner mid-stretch of a Group One race. His morning works have been so electric that he was recently “bought” by a slot-holder for The Everest. As much as 7-1 was offered early this week for The Shorts, and Rothfire has been bet down to 9-2 to complete a fairytale comeback this Friday night.

Feature Race: The George Main Stakes, Race 7 at Royal Randwick in Sydney. The George Main is a one-mile Group One race at weight-for-age. Winx set the stakes record of 1.33.65 in 2017, when winning her second of three George Mains.

Star Performer: #7 Verry Elleegant (6-5 favorite). Australia's Horse of the Year for the 2020/21 season made her 6-year-old debut with an excellent 2nd-place finish in the G1 Winx Stakes, at seven furlongs, four weeks ago.

Hold All Tickets: Verry Elleegant has followed the same path from the Winx Stakes the past two years, and failed to win the George Main both times (as favorite last year). In both campaigns, she peaked in the following race of the form cycle when stepping up to 1-1/4miles.

Alternatives:

#1 Kolding (7-1) owns two G1 wins at the Randwick Mile when making his 3rd start from a layoff – including last year's George Main at 9-1. However, he might have “lost a step.” Kolding and Verry Elleegant are both trained by Chris Waller, of Winx fame.

#2 Think It Over (5-1) arrived in the last breath to win a G2 at the Randwick Mile two weeks ago. He might be looking for more distance.

#3 Cascadian (7-1) started favorite when 4th behind Think It Over. Peaked 3rd-up last campaign to win a G1 at the Randwick Mile.

Blowout: #6 Lion's Roar (40-1) did nothing off a layoff, but is 2-for-2 when 2nd-up. Both wins were at a mile – the latest in the G1 Randwick Guineas, at 20-1, when beating subsequent dual-G1 winner Mo'unga.

Selections: 3 Cascadian; 7 Verry Elleegant; 6 Lion's Roar

The Randwick card will be broadcast live on TVG this Friday night (First Post: 9:40pm ET / 6:40pm PT) alongside cards from Kembla Grange, Gold Coast and Eagle Farm. All races will be live-streamed in HD on the new Sky Racing World Appskyracingworld.com and major ADW platforms such as TVG, TwinSpiresXpressbet, NYRABets, WatchandWagerHPIbet, and AmWager. Wagering is also available via these ADW platforms. Fans can get free access to live-streaming, past performances and expert picks on all races at skyracingworld.com.

Four Australian Jockeys Suspended Three Months For Breach Of COVID-19 Protocols

Leading Australian jockey Jamie Kah was issued a three-month suspension on Monday, reports skysports.com, due to a breach in COVID-19 protocols of both state government and racing regulators. Also issued similar suspensions were jockeys Ben Melham, Ethan Brown, and Celine Gaudray.

The group was found to have attended a gathering at an Airbnb on Wednesday evening. Racing Victoria suspended each of the four jockeys through Nov. 25.

“I want to apologize for my recent behavior in breaching the government and racing Covid rules,” Kah wrote on Twitter. “I am deeply embarrassed and disappointed with myself. There is no excuse for what I have done and I have let myself down, my family and friends, the racing industry and all Victorians who are doing the right thing in this lockdown. I deserve the penalty handed down by the stewards and will take time to reflect on my actions and its impact on so many people.”

Australia: Two Arrested After Race-Fixing Probe

Two individuals have been arrested in Australia after a race-fixing probe, reports racing.com. Racing Victoria is among the three racing codes to have assisted the Victoria police's Sporting Integrity Intelligence Unit, whose investigation was focused on “the alleged use of illegal substances in racing and corrupt betting practices, as well as the use, possession and trafficking of cocaine.”

The investigation remains ongoing, and both individuals were released in the afternoon pending further enquiry.

“Victorians are well known for their love of sport but equally they want to know that the playing field is fair and honest,” said Intelligence and Covert Support Command Superintendent Steve White. “I can assure the public that Victoria Police take matters of corruption in sport seriously. We will continue to work with our stakeholders to target, disrupt and apprehend people who commit these offences.”

Australian Star Winx To Visit Pierro For Next Mating

Four-time Australian Horse of the Year Winx will visit Coolmore Australia's Pierro for her next mating, the mare's ownership announced Wednesday.

A statement on the Winx website read:

“The Winx Ownership Group are pleased to announce that Winx will be visiting Pierro for this year's 2021 breeding season.

“Winx has been given a full year to recover from her ordeal and we are pleased to report that the mare has returned in great condition. She has been enjoying life on the farm with some friends while she is preparing to go back to the breeding barn this spring.”

The mating comes after Winx lost what would have been her first foal, a filly by I Am Invincible, in October 2020.

A winner of 37 races (25 Group 1, including four runnings of the Cox Plate) in 43 starts, Winx was victorious in her final 33 outings.Trained by Chris Waller and ridden most often by Hugh Bowman, the daughter of Street Cry retired with earnings in excess of AUS$26 million.

Pierro, a 12-year-old son of Lonhro, stands at Coolmore Australia for an advertised fee of AUS$110,000.

Arguably the best son of top Australian sire Lonhro on the track or at stud, Pierro became the sixth horse to win Australia's 2-Year-Old Triple Crown, sweeping the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes, AJC Sires Produce Stakes, and Champagne Stakes. He came back at three to win five group stakes races, including another pair of Group 1 scores.

Pierro has also sired Australian Derby winner Levendi, and additional Group 1 winners Arcadia Queen, Pierata, Shadow Hero, and Regal Power.

Coolmore Australia noted the mating announcement with the following statement on its website:

“We are so grateful to the connections of the great Winx that she will visit Pierro in 2021. As a graduate of the farm, Winx is a source of immense pride for all of us at Coolmore. It is a great honour that she will visit a stallion at the place where she was raised and grazed.”
