Australia’s Ocean Road Up in Time in Gamely

Irish-bred Ocean Road, making her third start in North America, picked up her first stakes win at the highest level with a last-to-first score in Monday's GI Gamely S. at Santa Anita.

Graduating second out on the Lingfield all-weather in December of 2020, the bay was third in a pair of British stakes before shipping in for Hugo Palmer to run sixth after a slow start in the GI Maker's Mark Filly & Mare Turf before finishing full of run to get up in the last stride of a Keeneland allowance first out for this barn Apr. 15 Pegged as the third choice behind odds-on Going Global in this six-horse group, Ocean Road broke awkwardly under Umberto Rispoli and settled in last behind a loose longshot leader through fractions of :23.49 and :47.81. Picking it up while swinging five wide at the top of the lane started to reel in the leaders at the sixteenth pole and closed determinedly to just tag Going to Vegas in the shadow of the wire.

“I think there's some more improvement in her and I can't see why she wouldn't keep going forward,” said winning trainer Brendan Walsh, who is based in Kentucky and flew in earlier Sunday from Lexington. “Umberto had her in a nice spot and he was able to creep in a little closer going to the [far] turn. There were a couple nice fillies in this race and we knew we weren't going to get by them too easy. She showed a nice kick and it's always good to see that from a horse coming over here to run in this country. The guys that came out with her here to Santa Anita have been telling me all week how good she's been doing, that she's just blossomed out here. Today, she had a bit of a swagger about her. I knew she was going to run a good race, whether it was going to be good enough or not remained to be seen.”

“It's very special,” added Rispoli, who despite relocating in early April to Kentucky, opted to return to Santa Anita recently. “Sheikh Fahad [owner, Qatar Racing] always was a big supporter of mine when I was in France and even overseas a couple of times, he came to run in Hong Kong with a couple of horses and I was always pleased to wear his colors … Coming back and having a Grade I win here makes me very happy.”

Pedigree Notes:
With the win, Ocean Road becomes the fifth Grade I/Group 1 winner, 26th stakes winner and 16th graded stakes winner for Coolmore's Australia. She is the third black-type winner out of her dam, following MGISW Wigmore Hall and German stakes winner Lady Liberty (Ire) (Shirocco {Ger}). Out of a Canadian GSW, Love And Laughter has a yearling colt by Saxon Warrior (Jpn).

Australia’s Tranquil Lady Outclasses Blue Wind Opposition

Six days after the G1 Prix Ganay victory of her half-brother State of Rest (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), Teme Valley Racing's Tranquil Lady (Ire) (Australia {GB}–Repose) kept the family honour well and truly intact with an authoritative success in Naas' G3 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Blue Wind S. Sent off the 3-1 joint-second favourite in what appeared to be a tight contest, the chestnut who had been fourth in Navan's Listed Salsabil S. on her 3-year-old bow Apr. 23 travelled sweetly in third early under Dylan Browne McMonagle. Cruising to Ballydoyle's 11-4 favourite Lily Pond (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) two out, she was sent on into a clear advantage soon after and relished the run to the line to hand that rival a four-length thrashing, with another 5 1/2 lengths back to the winner's stablemate Tosen Lydia (Ire) (The Gurkha {Ire}) in third. Joseph O'Brien admitted he hadn't been considering the G1 Cazoo Oaks for the impressive winner, but could be in for a change of heart. “She popped her head up today as if she should be going there,” he said. “It wasn't the plan, but it's definitely a conversation we'll have with Richard and Jim [Cockburn] now. We kind of had the Curragh in our minds, but we have to certainly talk about it now.”

Tranquil Lady, who had been second to the smart Limiti di Greccio (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}) in The Curragh's Listed Staffordstown Stud S. in October, was paying a compliment to the Salsabil one-two Concert Hall (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Magical Lagoon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) here but her trainer believes she was not seen at her best on that occasion. “I don't know why she didn't really fire in Navan, it wasn't a bad run and it was probably a good race but we were hoping for more and it's nice to see her doing it today,” he revealed. “This was plan b to come here, to be honest, but she came out of Navan well and we thought it was a suitable race. I was a bit worried about the [easy] ground and [Teme Valley racing manager] Richard [Ryan] convinced me to run her. I don't think she wants it too soft, but she handled it well and Dylan gave her a lovely ride.” Of the yard's well-regarded Tosen Lydia, who met with defeat for the first time and was left behind by the front two, he added, “She probably won't go to the Oaks. We think she's a good filly, but I'm not sure if she might be best at a mile.”

Tranquil Lady is the third foal out of the unraced dam, with the second State of Rest already a G1 Cox Plate and GI Saratoga Derby Invitational hero prior to his weekend exploits in ParisLongchamp. The second dam Monaassabaat (Zilzal) took the Listed Virginia S. before producing the listed scorers Prince Alzain (Street Sense) and Echo River (Irish River {Fr}), with the latter also second inn the G3 May Hill S. She is also the second dam of the G2 Royal Lodge S. and G2 Vintage S. runner-up Artigiano (Distorted Humor) and listed-placed Dubai Legacy (Discreet Cat).

The third dam is the 16-times-winning dual GI Vanity H. heroine and champion It's In the Air (Mr. Prospector), whose descendants include the triple group 1-winning Champion S. hero Storming Home (GB) (Machiavellian), the GI American Oaks heroine Music Note (A. P. Indy) and her G1 Dubai World Cup-winning son Mystic Guide (Ghostzapper), plus the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches winner Musical Chimes (In Excess {Ire}). Repose's 2-year-old filly Double Scoop (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) was a €180,000 purchase by Anthony Dutrow at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale.

Bangkok Retired to Chapel Stud

Multiple group winner Bangkok (Ire) (Australia {GB}–Tanaghum {GB}, by Darshaan {GB}) has been retired to Chapel Stud in the UK for 2022. A fee will be announced at a later date for the dual-purpose stallion. The bay, who was bred by Barronstown Stud, will stand at Chapel on behalf of owner/breeder Simon Davies. The deal was brokered by Billy Jackson-Stops of JS Bloodstock Consultancy.

A 500,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling, Bangkok raced in the colours of King Power Racing. Trained by Andrew Balding, his best win was in the 2021 G2 Sky Bet York S., while he also scored in the G3 Bet365 Classic Trial in 2019 and two editions of the Listed Betway Winter Derby Trial (2020/21). The son of the stakes-placed Tanaghum also placed three more times at group level and retires with a mark of 24-6-6-1 and earnings of $926,107.

Chapel Stud Director Roisin Close said, “I am delighted to be standing Bangkok on behalf of Simon Davies, Welsh Marches Stud. He is an exciting addition to both Chapel Stud and the British stallion ranks. Bangkok was a high-class, tough, and consistent multiple stakes winner, and had an excellent career over four seasons. He is undeniably attractive with great presence and conformation, all backed up by an outstanding pedigree.”

Simon Davies added, “We are extremely excited to add Bangkok to stand alongside Planteur (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) at Chapel Stud. He was an immensely tough and sound racehorse and as the only son of Australia to stand in Britain will complement Planteur perfectly and give breeders another quality option next year.”

The April foal is a half-brother to Group 1 winner Matterhorn (Ire) (Raven's Pass), Group 3 winner Tactic (GB), stakes winner Yaazy (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), who also placed twice at the Group 3 level, and the stakes-placed Zahoo (Ire) (Nayef). Another half-sister produced top European miler and four-time Group 1 winner Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}). His second dam Mehthaaf (Nureyev) landed the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas.

Andrew Balding said, “Bangkok has been a pleasure to train for the last four seasons. His class has enabled him to achieve results at a variety of distances and his courage and constitution are second to none.  He has the ability, looks and temperament to be a top-class performer at stud, and we will certainly be supporting him with mares.”

Australia’s Point Lonsdale In Command In The Futurity

Keeping it very simple, Ryan Moore took Saturday's G2 Galileo Irish EBF Futurity S. by the scruff of the neck on the 1-6 favourite Point Lonsdale (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and yet again the TDN Rising Star was able to gallop his rivals into the ground from the front. Returning to The Curragh at which he had made his impressive debut June 2, the 1-6 favourite was kept honest by his chief market rival Maritime Wings (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) who had chased him home in the G3 Tyros S. at Leopardstown July 22. Again stretching that rival beyond his comfort zone with his relentless gallop, the bay hit the line with 4 1/4 lengths to spare as fellow Ballydoyle runner The Acropolis (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) ended up 2 1/4 lengths back in third. On a day when Reach For the Moon (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) advertised the form of his Listed Chesham S. success at Royal Ascot June 19, the full-brother to Broome (Ire) was further enhancing his reputation as he provided Aidan O'Brien with a 14th winner of this seven-furlong staging post. “He's been slowly progressing with every run and, while he always gets a lead at home in his work, there's no point if it's going to become a slow-run race,” he said. “He's a lovely straightforward horse and the plan coming here was the [G1 Dr Vincent O'Brien] National Stakes [over this course and distance Sept. 12]. He's never finished going to the line and gets seven really well. He's very like his dad, who was just beaten in the Guineas and went on to win the Derby and he's probably slicker than his brother, a lower mover who is very genuine and relaxed in every way. He takes everything in his stride and has plenty of class.”

Point Lonsdale's dam Sweepstake (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), whose daughter of Lope de Vega (Ire) is due to sell at the upcoming Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, was successful in the Listed National S. and Bedanken S., runner-up in the GIII Appalachian S. an third in the G3 Princess Margaret S. In the year of the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud success of her 5-year-old son Broome, she looks to have unearthed another leading light in this untested colt by Galileo's Australia. Galileo's influence in this family is felt in the triple group-winning stayer Ernest Hemingway (Ire), while his son Frankel (GB) was responsible for the past Futurity winner and G1 Irish Derby runner-up Rostropovich (Ire) and the G3 Prix d'Aumale winner Toulifaut (Ire). This is also the dynasty of the stable's G1 Phoenix S. hero and proven sire Zoffany (Ire) and last year's G1 St Leger runner-up Berkshire Rocco (Fr) (Sir Percy {GB}). It is not entirely fanciful that the Triple Crown hero Coolmore have waited over 50 years for could spring forth from this family's mix of speed and stamina.
