August Debut for Haras de Beaufay

DEAUVILLE, France — Haras de Beaufay is one of the new names on the list of consignors this August at Arqana and its debut draft of two yearlings is in line with the farm manager's ambition to take things “step by step” as the new team carves out a reputation in a competitive field.

The stud, based near Gace in Normandy, was bought in 2016 by Czech breeder Jiri Travinicek, who set about turning it into a semi-commercial broodmare farm for his own mares and those owned by clients. Three years ago that dream became reality when Haras de Beaufay became fully operational under the management of Emmanuel Talvard, who grew up nearby on his family's famed Haras du Cadran.

“Our main target now is improving the quality of the broodmares and welcoming new clients,” said Talvard during a quick break between showing yearlings at Arqana on Friday. “We have some German, French, and Czech clients. This is just the beginning. We have been in operation for three years but we are taking it step by step.”

From the original farm purchase, Travinicek, has subsequently added two new parcels of lands to expand Haras de Beaufay to 160 hectares spread across two separate farms.

“This is a new place and it is a lovely farm with nice barns and good pasture,” Talvard added. “We have 100 hectares for broodmares and 60 for yearlings. Mr Travinicek has a real passion for it. He visits regularly from Czech and he loves his horses. We are in touch every week.”

Talvard's own education in the thoroughbred business came not just under his father, Pierre, the breeder of dual Group 1 winner Qemah (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), but also at Haras du Logis.

“I worked for my father for 14 years; he was my mentor and he taught me everything I know,” he said. “He's a hard worker so you have to be a hard worker to work for Pierre. I also worked for Julian Ince for three years and it was great to see the stallion side of the business. They were two good schools for me.”

Haras du Cadran is one of the bigger consignors at Arqana, and is selling 25 yearlings over the next three days, but Beaufay will be starting with a more modest draft of two. Lot 80, a colt from the final French-conceived crop of Wootton Bassett (GB), is being sold on behalf of his breeders Gonzague Baijot and Jean-Jacques Rahier and is out of the winning Harbour Watch (Ire) mare Paradise Cove (GB), herself out of a half-sister to the Arc winner Peintre Celebre. The colt's half-brother Sheer Rocks (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}) has added a third win to his tally since the catalogue was printed.

Beaufay is also selling a homebred daughter of Australia (GB), the only yearling by the stallion in the catalogue, as lot 301. A daughter of the listed-placed treble winner Holly Polly (Ger) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}), she is a half-sister to two multiple winners from the mare's trio of racing age offspring, including the twice listed-placed Qaiser (Fr) (Charm Spirit {Ire}).

“The Wootton Bassett colt we have prepped for a client and the filly by Australia is homebred and she has always been my favourite since the beginning,” said Talvard, who foaled the bay filly himself. “They are both really good movers so fingers crossed for both of them. We'll see what happens tomorrow.”

He continued, “Right from Wednesday we have had lots of people looking. I thought that might have been a quieter day but it was not the case. It's really good news though for everybody, and the market is really high at the moment.

“It's a nice challenge and it is good to have been involved with Haras de Beaufay from the beginning. To be here in August after only three years is just very exciting for us. We know we have to find our place. There are so many big consignors here but we have to start somewhere and try to do a good job, and hopefully it will work.”

Breeders’ Cup Mile Hero On Top At The Curragh

Winless in five starts since annexing last year's edition of the Curragh's G2 Romanised Minstrel S., 2020's GI Breeders' Cup Mile hero Order Of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}–Senta's Dream {GB}, by Danehill) repeated the dose with a 3 1/2-length triumph in Sunday's latest renewal of the seven-furlong contest at the Co. Kildare venue. The 5-year-old entire, who also hit the board in last term's G1 Prix Jacques Le Marois and G1 Prix du Moulin, arrived for this defence coming back off a third in last month's G1 Queen Anne S. at Royal Ascot and broke smartly to lead from flagfall. In command until bustled along when tackled by Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) approaching the quarter-mile marker, the 4-5 favourite soon had that rival's measure and was ridden clear in the closing stages to win by a comfortable 3 1/2 lengths. Dr Kempf (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) kept on well to finish a half length adrift in third.

“He's a lovely horse, he has loads of speed, he's tough, genuine and hardy,” said Aidan O'Brien after notching a seventh renewal. “He ran a lovely race first time back at [Royal] Ascot this year and the plan was to come here and go on to the [G1] Sussex [at Goodwood] with him. Obviously he's a Breeders Cup Mile winner so he has plenty of class and, as he's getting older, he's getting quicker and stronger. He was working very well going to Ascot, but it was his first run [of the year] so he had to tire a little bit and that's what he did do. He's very straight forward to ride, he's very sound and we're delighted with him. The plan is to go to the Sussex and finish up at the Breeders Cup and he could go to Hong Kong and do all those races. He's at that great age now that he's seasoned, has experience, and he's quicker this year which is great. That'll be a big help in those big races.”

Pedigree Notes:

Order Of Australia, one of his sire's five top-level winners, is kin to a pair of elite-level scorers, viz multiple Group 1-winning GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf heroine Iridessa (Ire) (Ruler Of The World {Ire}) and last term's GI Belmont Oaks Invitational heroine Santa Barbara (Ire) (Camelot {GB}). Their dam Senta's Dream (GB) (Danehill) is one of only two foals produced by GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare and GI Matriarch S. victrix Starine (Fr) (Mendocino). Starine, in turn, is a half-sister to G3 Prix Minerve third Pearlescence (Pleasantly Perfect), with both being out of a half-sister to the dam of Listed Criterium du Bequet third Weld Elven (Fr) (Kendor {Fr}).

Broome Gallops Hardwicke Rivals Into Submission

With the scene set on the final day of Royal Ascot, Saturday's G2 Hardwicke S. produced the inevitable as Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) conjured a 900th group win for Aidan O'Brien. Ryan Moore was the sorcerer once again, as the meeting's leading rider pulled off a front-running tour de force on the 6-1 shot who had already contributed five to that awe-inspiring tally. In many ways, last year's G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud hero and Breeders' Cup Turf runner-up is a fitting horse to bring up the milestone, typifying the honed resolution and hardiness that is the trainer's great trademark. Kept wide initially before crossing over to head off the rest, he had the 8-11 favourite Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in attendance but by the turn for home Godolphin's re-emerging Irish Derby, St Leger and Grand Prix de Paris hero was in trouble. Striding with zest and purpose to the line, the six-year-old who sports the Masaaki Matsushima silks had 3 1/4 lengths to spare over Mostahdaf (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), with Hurricane Lane perhaps finding this too hot on his comeback 1 1/4 lengths away in third.

“We are so privileged to be in the position we are and are so grateful to everyone at Ballydoyle, to John and Sue, Michael and Doreen, Derrick and Gay and Georg and Emily,” O'Brien said in his time-honoured deferential style, before turning his attention to the jockey. “Ryan has done an incredible job on Broome and it was a brilliant ride,” he added. “He is a six-year-old horse now, but the strange thing is he seems to be coming to the peak of his career. He has a very high cruising speed and does not surrender. We think we will see the best of him this year.”

O'Brien's contention that Broome is reaching an apex is borne out by the fact that most of his recent performances have been in the last 12 months, with a second to Wonderful Tonight (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) in this preceding his Saint-Cloud highlight and his stirring effort at Del Mar, where only Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) could suppress him. Only 11th in the G1 Japan Cup, he was a well-beaten fifth in the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at The Curragh May 22 but his trainer revealed he had excuses. “When he was getting unsaddled after the Japan Cup, a horse walking by kicked him and fractured a shin,” he explained. “He was off for a long time. He just had the comeback run in the Tattersalls Gold Cup and finished fifth behind all those good horses. We will be thinking about something like the King George back here.”

“Broome has been brilliantly prepared–he was a different machine to what I've known before,” Moore said. “He was in a beautiful rhythm and stretched out excellent. He was really good today–he just flowed and lengthened. We always thought a lot of him–he was close to winning a Derby and a few things haven't gone his way. Aidan had him in a place to do that today.”

Mostahdaf was up to this trip for the first time and saw it out strongly, giving John and Thady Gosden options now. Gosden Jr said, “Ryan gave Broome an exceptional ride from the front–probably the best ride I've seen this week. He got loose, but Mostahdaf ran very well. It seems to be the right trip for him now and we'll see where we go from here.”

Charlie Appleby was keen to put Hurricane Lane's reversal in the context of his overall program and said, “We haven't hidden anything about what our thought processes are–we're working back from October, very much so. We feel Hurricane Lane is our Arc horse and, with the ground being as quick as it was, I said to William Buick 'don't forget, if it's not happening for him, look after him round there'. William said he travelled into it well, but his action just shortened a bit and he said he just went through his girths and just got tired. The ground was quick enough for him–he does move better when there's ease in the ground–we all know that. More importantly, he took on two match-fit horses as well. I'm pleased–you're just glad they've still got their enthusiasm.”

If Broome is this good at six, that bodes well for his 3-year-old full-brother Point Lonsdale (Ire) who has already garnered the G2 Futurity S., G3 Tyros S. and Listed Chesham S. here. The dam is the Listed National S. winner and GII Appalachian S. runner-up Sweepstake (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), a daughter of Dust Flicker (GB) (Suave Dancer) who is a full-sister to the G3 Prix de la Nonette scorer Dust Dancer (GB). She is in turn the second dam of the G1 Phoenix S.-winning Zoffany (Ire) and the G3 Bengough S. winner Projection (GB), who shares Acclamation as a sire with Sweepstake. This is the Hesmonds Stud family of the G2 Premio Lydia Tesio winner Claxon (GB) (Caerleon), her GIII Hillsborough S.-winning and G1 Nassau S.-placed daughter Cassydora (GB) (Darshaan {GB}) and the likes of Ernest Hemingway (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Frankel's Rostropovich (Ire) and Toulifaut (Ire). Sweepstake's unraced 2-year-old filly by Lope de Vega (Ire) is named Saadiyat (Ire) purchased by Al Shira'aa Farms for 475,000gns at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, while she also has a yearling colt by Frankel.

Mare Australis In Command In The Grand Prix de Chantilly

Working his way back to the level of his success in last year's G1 Prix Ganay, Gestut Schlenderhan's Mare Australis (Ire) (Australia {GB}) was steered to a cosy win in Sunday's G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly in what amounted to one of Olivier Peslier's masterclasses. Always comfortable on the front end kept company by the pacemaker Soho (Ger) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), the 3-1 shot took command at the top of the straight and had the energy to shy at the advertising boards en route to a two-length verdict over Bubble Gift (Fr) (Nathaniel {Ire}), with Glycon (Fr) (Le Havre {GB}) a further length away in third.

Lightly-campaigned for his age and raced only twice since his career highlight at ParisLongchamp last May, Mare Australis had posted a respectable return when third behind Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) and Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) back at that venue Apr. 10 before finishing fourth in the latest edition of the Ganay there at the start of last month. Trainer Andre Fabre is keen to go where the underfoot conditions suit. “This horse had been away a long time and he needed his two starts this year to reach his top condition,” he explained. “Softer ground today was also a help. If the ground is suitable and the weather not too dry, he might take his chance in the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud. If not we will wait for the autumn to race him again.”

Mare Australis is the last live foal out of the dual listed-placed Miramare (Ger) (Rainbow Quest), whose listed-winning dam Minaccia (Ger) (Platini {Ger}) produced five black-type performers headed by the G2 Prix de Pomone and G3 Prix Allez France winner Macleya (Ger) (Winged Love {Ire}) and the G3 Prix de Barbeville scorer Montclair (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). Also the second dam of the G2 Prix du Muguet-placed Mer et Nuages (Fr) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and the GI United Nations H. hero Tribhuvan (Fr) (Toronado {Ire}), she is connected to the dual Classic-winning German champion Majoritat (Ger) (Konigsstuhl {Ger}) and the legendary Monsun (Ger), while this dam line is also responsible for the G1 Japanese Derby hero Eishin Flash (Jpn) (King's Best).
