Munnings Filly Sprints To Astoria Victory

Closing Act (Munnings) put it all together here to secure the first black-type victory of her young career in the Astoria S. as the 3-5 favorite.

A step slow on debut May 11 beneath the Twin Spires, she showed a good turn of foot in the lane to run down rivals for a neck win over an experienced rival. Brushing with Living Magic after leaving the blocks, she was urged along to keep pace from the outside of rivals and went as far as four wide into the final bend. Gaining ground steadily to launch her bid coming up on the quarter pole, Closing Act took the lead in upper stretch and shook away under a right-hand stick into the final furlong. It was 3 1/4 lengths back to pacesetter Union Suit and Living Magic came on from the back to round out the trifecta.

“She made a few mistakes first time out and we told Irad [Ortiz, Jr.] that we thought she'd be more forwardly placed and more professional, and she was,” said Scott Blasi, Steve Asmussen's assistant. “She got a lot out of her first race. Super proud of her today. She's really gone through a growth spurt this month and she's filling out and looks beautiful.”

A Texas-bred daughter of Munnings, the victress is the most recent to the races thus far for Evening Show, who also counts a yearling filly by Competitive Edge to her tally. That dam hails from the female line of Tuesday Evening (Nodouble), who herself produced GISP Madame Pandit (Wild Again).

Said daughter would go on to tally GISW Mea Domina (Dance Brightly) and GSP Ivory Empress (Seeking the Gold), who would gain her fame via 'TDN Rising Star' MGSW McCraken (Ghostzapper); GISP & MGSW Four Graces (Majesticperfection); 'TDN Rising Star' GSP With Dignity (Declaration of War); and MGSP Bondurant (War Front). This is the extended family of GISP & MGSW Greek Sun. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Lifetime Breeding Right to Girvin Offered at Fasig-Tipton July

Fasig-Tipton has added seven supplemental entries to Monday's July Selected Horses of All Ages sale including a lifetime breeding right to young stallion Girvin (Tale of Ekati-Catch the Moon, by Malibu Moon) as HIP 611. The freshman sire is off to a quick start at stud with his first crop of two-year-olds in 2022, siring five winners from eight runners to date. These include the undefeated Devious Dame, who captured the Astoria S. at Belmont on June 9 in a 5 1/4-length romp. Girvin sired two more maiden special weight winners this past weekend include Damon's Mound, who was named a 'TDN Rising Star' following his 12 1/2-length debut win at Churchill Downs July 2. A debut winner himself as a 2-year-old, Girvin won the GI Haskell, GII Risen Star S., and the GII Louisiana Derby at three on his way to career earnings of more than $1.6 million. He is a half-brother to graded stakes winners Midnight Bourbon (Tiznow), Cocked and Loaded (Colonel John), and Pirate's Punch (Shanghai Bobby).  His immediate family includes Grade I winners Silver Max (Badge of Silver) and Yes It's True (Is It True).

“The lifetime breeding right to Girvin is an exciting, unique addition to this year's sale,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “It offers breeders an opportunity to get in on the ground floor with a stallion with unlimited potential.”

Devious Dame a First Black-Type Winner for Girvin in Astoria

John Oxley's Devious Dame (Girvin) ooked to be making hard work of it while consigned to an imperfect trip in Thursday's $150,000 Astoria S. at Belmont Park, but the 2-5 favorite on the strength of a 5 1/2-length debut success on Churchill debut May 5 leveled off nicely when asked to claim pacesetting Alexis's Storm (Race Day) passing the eighth pole and glided clear to become the first black-type winner for her freshman sire (by Tale of Ekati).

Away only fairly from the five hole, the $240,000 OBS March breezer (:20 4/5) was last for a few strides not long after the start and raced in fourth spot, three wide and busily ridden, through the middle stages. Finding her best stride as they reached the quarter pole, Devious Dame steadily reeled in her front-running rival and cruised under the line to score unextended. Alexis's Storm held second ahead of Girl Bye (Cajun Breeze) in third.

“We came up here with the intention of winning but got to thinking that we'd rather let her settle a bit more than being adamant about just rushing her off her feet,” said winning trainer Norm Casse. “I do think she's a two-turn filly and we need to teach her some of that patience now. Thankfully, it paid off.”

Casse indicated that the 6 1/2-furlong GIII Adirondack S. at Saratoga Aug. 7 could be next for his charge, followed by the GI Darley Alcibiades S. at Keeneland in October.

Devious Dame is out of an unraced half-sister to MSW & MGSP Courtesan (Street Sense) and SW Chary (Montbrook). The extended female family includes GISWs Discreet Cat (Forestry), Discreetly Mine (Mineshaft) and Awesome Maria (Maria's Mon) and SW/MGISP Pretty Wild (Wild Again). The Shady Lady produced colts by Awesome Slew in each of the last two seasons. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.
