Champion Maximum Security Retired To Ashford Stud

Champion Maximum Security has been retired from racing and is now available for inspection at Ashford Stud where he will stand for 2021.

A winner in his only start as a juvenile by 9 3/4 lengths for owner/breeders Gary and Mary West, Maximum Security was first past the post in all of his four Grade 1 starts as a sophomore, winning the Haskell, the Cigar Mile and the Florida Derby and was arguably unlucky to have lost the Kentucky Derby despite having run out an easy winner.

As a 4-year-old, Maximum Security won the lucrative Saudi Cup, defeating eight individual Grade 1 winners, before transferring to Bob Baffert for whom he won the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap and the G1 Pacific Classic Stakes.

The best son of Street Cry's Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner New Year's Day, Maximum Security is a three-parts brother to triple Grade 1 winner Flat Out so he has the pedigree to match his race record and looks.

“Maximum Security was an exceptional racehorse and I have no doubt that he will prove very popular with breeders once they see him,” said Ashford's director of sales Charlie O'Connor. “He's an extremely impressive-looking individual.”

Maximum Security's fee has been set at $20,000.

City of Light Weanlings Clear The Path At Fasig-Tipton November Sale

The first major commercial test for North America's first-crop weanling sires is the Fasig-Tipton November sale, and City of Light has come out fast from the gate, responsible for two of the evening's top three-priced weanlings.

Larry Best's OXO Equine went to $600,000 to secure Hip 129, a City of Light colt who is the first foal out of the winning Into Mischief mare Breaking Beauty.

Bred in Kentucky by Camas Park Stud, the bay colt's second dam is the German Oaks winner Que Belle, whose runners include Grade/Group 3 winners Osidy and Quetsche. Looking further down the page, one will find European champion Bakharoff, among other international graded and group stakes winners.

Hunter Valley Farm consigned the colt, as agent.

The weanling-to-yearling pinhook contingent showed up at the top of market on Sunday as well, with the Brian Graves-led Blue Sky Stables landing a first-crop City of Light colt for $380,000.

The gray or roan colt, offered as Hip 82, is out of the unplaced Unbridled's Song mare Stormy Rhapsody, whose runners include the stakes-placed Arkaan. He was bred in Kentucky by Fred W. Hertrich III and John D. Fielding, and his extended family includes French Horse of the Year Allez France, Grade 1 winner Al Mamoon, La Gueriere, and Icon Project, as well as Grade 2 winners Master Command and Lasting Approval.

Taylor Made Sales Agency consigned the colt, as agent for Hertrich's Watercress Farm.

City of Light, by Quality Road, stands at Lane's End in Versailles, Ky. He has a busy couple weeks ahead of him at the fall mixed sales, with five weanlings cataloged in the Fasig-Tipton November sale and 15 in the book at Keeneland.

The first weanlings by Triple Crown winner Justify were expected to make an impact during their debut mixed sale season this fall, and those high-level returns have already started to roll in on Sunday at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale, led by a $400,000 filly.

Offered as Hip 30, the filly sold to Breeze Easy, and she is out of the placed Sky Mesa mare Lastofthsummerwine, whose five foals to race includes four winners, all of them black type earners. She is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Conquest Panthera, Grade 3 winner Happy Like a Fool, stakes winner Hawaiian Noises, and Grade 2-placed Maniacal.

Bred in Kentucky by Magnolia Bloodstock and Lynch Bages LTD, the filly hails from the family of Grade 1 winners Nine Keys, French Colonial and Silver Voice, Grade 2 winner Clef d'Argent.

Four Star Sales consigned the filly, as agent.

Justify, a son of Scat Daddy who stands at Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky., will also have an busy November sale season ahead of him. He had nine foals cataloged to the Fasig-Tipton November sale to lead all first-crop sires, and he has 16 entered in the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, 11 of which are in the select Book 1.

Grade 1 Winner Bellafina Out Of Breeders’ Cup, To Be Bred To Uncle Mo In 2021

Multiple Grade 1 winner Bellafina was scheduled to have a farewell start in the upcoming Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Keeneland, but trainer Simon Callaghan told the Daily Racing Form that it would not come to be, owing to a “minor issue.”

The 4-year-old daughter of Quality Road will instead prepare for her first mating in 2021 with champion Uncle Mo, a resident of Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky., who has rapidly become one of North America's top commercial sires.

Owned by Kaleem Shah and the Coolmore partnership, Bellafina has won seven of 18 career starts for earnings of $1,617,975. She was one of the top juvenile fillies of 2018, notching victories in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante Stakes and G1 Chandelier Stakes, as well as the G2 Sorrento Stakes.

Bellafina then won her first three starts as a 3-year-old, taking the G2 Santa Ynez Stakes, G2 Las Virgenes Stakes, and G1 Santa Anita Oaks. Later that year, she finished second in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

The filly's 4-year-old campaign included a victory in the G3 Desert Stormer Stakes, and runner-up efforts in the G1 Ballerina Stakes and G2 Great Lady M Stakes.

Uncle Mo, a 12-year-old son of Indian Charlie, stands at Coolmore's Ashford Stud for an advertised fee of $175,000.

His initial crop of runners helped him set the record for progeny earnings by a freshman sire in 2015, led by Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner and champion Nyquist. The same horse won the following year's Kentucky Derby. Since then, Uncle Mo has established himself as one of the breed's most reliable sources for high-level runners and high-dollar auction horses.

Uncle Mo Tops Ashford 2021 Roster on Fee Raise to $175K

Leading Coolmore’s Ashford Stud’s 2021 roster is North America’s leading sire by graded stakes winners, Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie), who will stand for $175,000 in 2021 after being priced at $125,000 for 2020. The Eclipse winner had 19 black-type winner so far this season, led by Girl Daddy, Harvest Moon, Yaupon, Bast.

Ashford’s two Triple Crown winners, Justify (Scat Daddy), whose first foals are weanlings, and American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile), who leads the second-crop sire list by graded stakes winners, will stand for $125,000 and $100,000, respectively. Justify stood for $150,000 in 2020 and the reduction is in keeping with what many farms are doing for the upcoming breeding season in response to the economy’s reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic. American Pharoah was officially listed as private in 2020.

New sires for the Versailles location include champion and multiple Grade I winner Maximum Security (New Year’s Day), as well as Echo Town (Speightstown), who won the GI H. Allen Jerkens S. this summer at Saratoga. Their fees will be determined upon retirement. In addition, Coolmore announced Thursday that popular Ireland-based Caravaggio (Scat Daddy) will relocate to Kentucky for the upcoming breeding season.

“Our established sires have enjoyed great success on the racetrack this year, but in recognition of the challenging times we find ourselves in, we have reduced the fees of all of our sires yet to have runners with the one exception of Mendelssohn, who we have probably under-priced all along,” said Ashford’s Director of Sales Charlie O’Connor. “We have three exciting new additions to our roster and we look forward to watching Echo Town and Maximum Security continue to show their brilliance on the racecourse before they retire.”

Echo Town to Stand at Ashford Stud

Echo Town (Speightstown–Letgomyecho, by Menifee) will take up residence at Ashford Stud upon his retirement from racing.

Purchased by L&N Racing for $100,000 at KEESEP, the ‘TDN Rising Star’ has captured four of his nine starts thus far for earnings of $410,020. The Steve Asmussen trainee scored a career-high this summer when winning the GI Runhappy H. Allen Jerkens S. at Saratoga and was most recently in the GII Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix S. at Keeneland Oct. 2.

“We are delighted that Echo Town will be coming to Ashford. He is a very good-looking horse and Speightstown is making an impression as a sire of sires,” said Coolmore’s Director of Sales Charlie O’Connor. “As one of the best sprinters of his generation we think Echo Town offers a similar profile to our own Munnings, who continues to go from strength to strength.”

“We are extremely excited for Echo Town to stand at Coolmore America,” said L&N’s Michael Levinson. “He has been a star on the racetrack, and we’re confident Coolmore will give him every opportunity to succeed as a stallion, we look forward to seeing his foals hit the ground in 2022.”
