Team Rest Of The World Looking Forward To Shergar Cup

A few days out from the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, five jockeys, including the entire Rest of the World Team, were on hand to answer questions from the media at Ascot Racecourse. Held on Aug. 6, four teams (GB & Ire, Rest of the World, Europe, and Ladies) will compete across eight races gathering points, with awards handed out for the top team and top rider. Rest of the World Team Captain Christophe Lemaire was joined by the Australian-based pair of Kerrin McEvoy and Jason Collett, as well as Japan's Takeshi Yokoyama. Ladies team member Emma-Jayne Wilson (Canada), was also on hand.

Lemaire, a five-time champion jockey in Japan, said, “I think it has been 10 years since I last had a ride at Ascot. I have had a month off and there is no better place to get back in the saddle than here. Every time you race here, there is an excitement because you know it is an important occasion–you are competing against the best horses and the best jockeys in front of a great atmosphere.

“I am really looking forward to the Shergar Cup. We have a strong team made up of experience, with myself and Kerrin, and then the two young guns in Jason and Takeshi. I think it will be a nice combination as we try to win the title, and Kerrin's experience will be very important. He is a top-class jockey and has enjoyed a lot of success in England.”

Formerly Godolphin's number two rider back in the early 2000s, McEvoy is competing in his third Shergar Cup, and said, “It is exciting to be back. I haven't ridden here since 2019, when I did a little stint while William [Buick] was injured. This is a great part of the world to visit, let alone ride horses.”

New Zealander Jason Collett is competing in his first Shergar Cup, and was also experience Ascot Racecourse for the first time. The 31-year-old said, “This is my first time at Ascot and, I have to say, it is something else with the grandstand and everything. This place obviously has a bit of history, so it is pretty awesome to be here.”

Takeshi Yokoyama, who comes from a family of Group 1-winning jockeys, earned five Group 1 victories last year headed by Japanese Classic success on Efforia (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) and Titleholder (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}).

Yokoyama said via translator, “This is my first time at Ascot and my first time in the UK. I am really excited to be here and am appreciative of the invitation. Riding in the Shergar Cup will be a new experience for me. It is a big honour to represent Japan and hopefully I can learn a lot.”

Wilson, the most successful female jockey of all time in Canada, said, “I was supposed to come back for the Shergar Cup in 2020 but obviously the pandemic shut everything down. I think it must be five years since I last rode here, so it feels great to be back.

“I love this event and the novelty of it all. The international element is amazing and it is something you don't find unless you are in a competition like this. The team aspect creates a special camaraderie.”

Teofilo’s Naval Power Outclasses Ascot Rivals By Daylight

Godolphin's hitherto undefeated homebred Naval Power (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}–Emirates Rewards {GB}, by Dubawi {Ire}), who garnered novice events at Great Yarmouth in May and Leicester last month, and is now bound for a seat at the top table after streaking to an impressive success in this black-type bow. Positioned second in the slipstream of the pacesetting Finn's Charm (GB) (Kingman {GB}) through the initial fractions, he eased into an open lane soon after halfway and powered clear once stirred into action at the two pole to easily outclass Waiting All Night (GB) (Rajasinghe {Ire}) by daylight for a career high.

“I was pleased with his first run, confident with him second time and very confident coming here over seven [furlongs],” said trainer Charlie Appleby of the G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. entry. “What we have seen is an exciting horse and my feeling is that when we go up to a mile he will improve again. We will see him at his best in a Group 1 over a mile, maybe in a race like the [G1] Vertem Futurity Trophy at Doncaster. We haven't seen an unbeaten Teofilo for some time now and he couldn't have been more visually impressive.”

Naval Power, who becomes the 110th stakes scorer for his sire (by Galileo {Ire}), is the fourth of five foals and one of three winners for Emirates Rewards (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), herself a multiple-winning daughter of GI Spinster S. heroine Asi Siempre (El Prado {Ire}). Asi Siempre also threw GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf-winning sire Outstrip (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and is kin to the dam of Listed Grand Handicap de Deauville victrix Dubase (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and the dual stakes-placed Avante (GB) (Shamardal). Naval Power's G3 Cherry Hinton S.-winning fourth dam Turkish Treasure (Sir Ivor) has three stakes winners to her credit headed by G2 Norfolk S. winner Magic Mirror (GB) (Nureyev). Emirates Rewards has a yearling filly by Harry Angel (Ire) to come.

Lezoo Notches Landmark Score For Zoustar At Ascot

Marc Chan and Andrew Rosen's 2-year-old filly Lezoo (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}), making a swift return after running second in Newmarket's July 8 G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. last time, notched a landmark score in Saturday's G3 Princess Margaret Keeneland S. at Ascot to become her sire's first Northern Hemisphere pattern-race winner in the six-furlong dash. She had previously posted victories in a June 11 novices' heat over five furlongs at Bath and when upped to six furlongs for Newmarket's June 25 Listed Empress Fillies' S. in her penultimate start. Positioned off the early tempo after a slightly awkward exit from the stands' side stall, the 6-5 favourite made smooth headway from halfway to launch her challenge at the quarter-mile marker and kept on strongly once hitting the front soon after to withstand the late rattle of the hitherto undefeated Kinta (Ire) (Sioux Nation) by a length.

“She's a tough girl, four runs in five weeks, and I wish they were all like her,” commented trainer Ralph Beckett. “She has just thrived on her racing, it is great to get it done and now we will think about the [G1] Cheveley Park. I really didn't intend to run her here after Newmarket, I thought we would go to the [G2] Lowther as I felt York would really suit her as a racecourse, as a track as well. Andrew Rosen, her part-owner, has had horses in England for 15 years and he has never seen one of them win. He's here today, so it is a good day for all concerned. We will go to the Lowther next, probably. We will keep running her and, if she keeps going like this, we will keep running her and won't stand in her way. When the ball is at your feet, it is a good idea to kick it.”

Pedigree Notes

Lezoo, already the first Northern Hemisphere-bred stakes winner for her reverse shuttle sire, is now the first at group level, as well. Zoustar began shuttling to Tweenhills Stud in 2019. He is the sire of 30 black-type winners–22 group–after Lezou's victory, and already owns Champion First-Season, Second-Season, and Third-Season sire titles from his Widden Stud base in New South Wales. His best progeny include Group 1 winners Sunlight (Aus), Zoutori (Aus), and Mizzy (Aus), while his dual Group 2-winning son and young sire Lean Mean Machine (Aus) was also third in the G1 Coolmore Stud S. to Sunlight and G2 Champagne Classic hero Zousain (Aus), also a sire.

The sixth foal from her G3 Firth Of Clyde S.-winning dam, Lezoo is bred on a similar cross to Zoustar's G3 Maribyrnong Plate winner Brereton (Aus), who is out of a Red Ransom mare. Roger Sez (Ire) is by Red Clubs (Ire), who scored his greatest victory in the G1 Betfred Sprint Cup in 2007, and is a son of Red Ransom. Her latest foal is a yearling filly by Territories (Ire).

Affair Of State (Ire) (Tate Gallery), the third dam of Lezoo, won at the listed level, and is also the dam of stakes winner Bibury Flyer (GB) (Zafonic), as well as the group-placed Hello Glory (GB) (Zamindar) and the stakes-placed Statesman (GB) (Doyoun {Ire}). Another of her daughters, the winning Star Now (GB) (Librettist), is the dam of G3 Polar Cup victor Tinnitus (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}).

Six Declared For Ascot’s King George

All six contenders stood their ground for Saturday's G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Qipco S. at Ascot as final declarations were confirmed Thursday morning. Juddmonte's G1 Irish Derby hero Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB} and G1 Oaks runner-up Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), set to make her first start in the Watership Down silks, will take on their elders with the advantage of a sizeable weight allowance afforded the Classic generation in the £1.25 million 12-furlong test. They have drawn gates six and three, respectively. Prince Faisal's globetrotting Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}), runner-up last year and a fast-finishing second in Sandown's G1 Coral-Eclipse earlier in the month, is set to be partnered by James Doyle for the first time and has been allocated box two for his bid to register a first win of the campaign. Gestut Auenquelle's G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe hero Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) regained the winning thread in Hamburg's G2 Grosser Hansa Preis during this month's Deutsches Derby meeting and will exit stall five. Last year's fourth Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and last month's G1 Coronation Cup second Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) complete the set and have been allocated posts one and four, respectively.
