Lope de Vega’s New Science Gets Up at Ascot

Godolphin's €260,000 Arqana Select yearling New Science (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) backed up a May 28 debut success going a shade over seven furlongs at Great Yarmouth with a seventh-of-10 effort when contesting a stellar renewal of Royal Ascot's June 19 Listed Chesham S. last time. He was sent postward with crowd support for Saturday's Listed Pat Eddery S. tackling the Berkshire venue's same seven-furlong strip and delivered a game display to register a career high. Steadied to settle off the pace in fifth until taking closer order approaching the quarter-mile marker, the 2-1 pick was shaken up for his bid with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and kept on strongly under continued rousting to subdue Angel Bleu (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) by a length nearing the line.

“He pleased us the first day at [Great] Yarmouth, which turned out to be a half-decent race, and then he just didn't handle the ground at Royal Ascot,” said assistant trainer Alex Merriam of the Sept. 12 G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National S. entry. “William [Buick] knew he wasn't handling it on the way to the start [last time] and we've just written that one off. He jumped nicely here, he travelled well and that was very pleasing. We'll be looking to step him up in grade now and something like the [G3] Solario [at Sandown] could be a possibility. His pedigree screams a mile and it's a staying pedigree, but we'll stick to seven [furlongs] for the time being.”

New Science is the latest of four foals and one of two scorers produced by G2 Park Hill S. and G3 Lillie Langtry S. placegetter Alta Lilea (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), herself a half-sister to the dual stakes-placed Mistress Quickly (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) and Listed Feilden S. runner-up Fighter Boy (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}). Descendants of his G2 Prix de l'Opera-winning third dam Mona Stella (Nureyev), herself kin to MG1SW G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Dancing Maid (Fr) (Lyphard), include G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud-winning sire Special Quest (Fr) (Rainbow Quest).

High-Class Field Of Six Remain For Saturday’s King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes

The 2021 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes at Ascot looks set to provide a memorable battle of the generations as a high-class field of six is headlined by the star 4-year-old filly Love (Aidan O'Brien), who will take on this year's Derby winner Adayar (Charlie Appleby).

The Group 1 contest offers the winner an expenses-paid berth to the Breeders' Cup Longines Turf this fall at Del Mar.

A dual-Classic winner last year, Love returned to action this season by winning the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot. She will be joined by her Group 1 winning stablemate Broome.

Wonderful Tonight (David Menuisier) is also declared for the race, having gotten the better of Broome when winning the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes at the Royal Meeting in June.

Further intrigue is provided by Mishriff (John & Thady Gosden), who has recorded international success this year in Saudi Arabia and Dubai and steps up to a mile and a half in this country for the first time.

Completing the line-up is Lone Eagle (Martyn Meade), the other 3-year-old runner in the race who was second in the Irish Derby, form which has already been franked by the winner Hurricane Lane.

Ahead of the race, Adayar's trainer Charlie Appleby, said: “I'm delighted with his preparation; he looks a million dollars. It's going to be a fantastic race to watch hopefully and whoever wins it will be top of the mile and a half division.

“It looks at the moment as if it was a good Derby. It [winning the King George and the Derby] hasn't been done since Galileo so for Adayar to turn up here is a huge occasion for everybody.

“It's a challenge and now we're stepping up into the big boy division so it's going to be a fascinating race. We're looking forward to it and excited to see what Adayar does.”

First Defence’s Tilsit Wins The Summer Mile

There was very little on form between the main protagonists for Saturday's G2 Summer Mile at Ascot, but one who did have some play in his profile was Tilsit (First Defence) and the Juddmonte homebred duly made that class edge tell to prevail for a career-best success. Last seen finishing a head second to Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) in the G1 Prix d'Ispahan over an extra furlong and 55 yards at ParisLongchamp May 30, the 4-1 favourite followed Century Dream (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) wide of the other runners throughout the early stages and stuck close as that stalwart kicked for home at the top of the straight. Taking until the furlong pole to master his veteran rival, the homebred who had won last year's G3 Thoroughbred S. at this trip was driven out by Kieran Shoemark to score by a 3/4 of a length, with Al Suhail (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) a length behind in third. “I felt we won quite cosily and he possibly wasn't doing a whole lot in front, but that's just him–he doesn't show much at home,” the jockey said. “Even cantering to the start, he was looking at everything. He's still relatively unexposed, so I think he can continue to progress.”

Despite the substandard nature of the opposition, very few horses can win a novice race by 19 lengths as Tilsit did on Newcastle's Tapeta last June and his next start saw him beat My Oberon (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in Goodwood's Thoroughbred S. at the end of July. Fourth on his 3-year-old finale in the G2 Joel S. at Newmarket in September, the homebred was sent to Riyadh for the Feb. 20 Neom Turf Cup but could manage only fifth in that 10 1/2-furlong contest prior to his European comeback when again in front of My Oberon but behind Skalleti in the Prix d'Ispahan. This puts the winner in the mix for the July 28 G1 Sussex S. and Shoemark thinks the race could suit. “When they set off into group 1 company again, I think the tempo of races are just run that little bit quicker and you can ride a little bit more efficient race,” he said. “He's won at Goodwood before last year and I do think he's better on quick ground too. He's an exciting prospect.” Charlie Hills's assistant Jamie Insole told the Racing Post, “You'd have to face Palace Pier, but every horse is beatable and Tilsit won at Glorious Goodwood last year, so likes the track.”

Tilsit is the first foal out of the once-raced Multilingual (GB) (Dansili {GB}), who hails from one of the finest families in the world of breeding. She is out of the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Zenda (GB) (Zamindar), responsible for the brilliant four-times group 1-winning Irish 2000 Guineas hero and prominent sire Kingman (GB), the G3 Tercentenary S.-winning Remote (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and the G3 Cumberland Lodge S. third First Eleven (GB) (Frankel {GB}). Also the second dam of the Listed Carnarvon S. winner and G2 Gimcrack S. third Repartee (Ire) by Kingman's sire Invincible Spirit (Ire), the G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen runner-up Fajjaj (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) and the G3 Musidora S. third Ricetta (GB) (Camelot {GB}), Zenda is a half to the triple group 1-winning July Cup hero and leading sire Oasis Dream (GB) whose son Native Trail (GB) was flying his flag in the G2 Superlative S. on the big sprint's undercard on this afternoon.

The fourth dam is the matriarch Bahamian (Ire) (Mill Reef), producer of the G1 Irish Oaks winner Wemyss Bight (GB) who was in turn responsible for the four-times top-level winner Beat Hollow (GB) (Sadler's Wells). Also connected to the G1 Prix du Jockey Club-winning sire New Bay (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and the star stayers Reefscape (GB) (Linamix {Fr}), Coastal Path (GB) (Halling) and Martaline (GB) (Linamix {Fr}), Multilingual has the unraced 3-year-old gelding Bilingual (English Channel), a 2-year-old colt by Kitten's Joy named Polyglot, a yearling filly by Noble Mission (GB) and a filly foal by No Nay Never.

Provision Made For Champions Day Course Switch

A provision has been made that will allow officials to move races on the round course to the inner track at Ascot on British Champions Day should the ground have 'heavy' in the going description at morning inspection. The previous rule stated that the inner course, which is normally used only for jumps races, could only be considered in an abandonment situation.

The course will be inspected by Clerk of the Course Chris Stickels as per usual on the morning of the race. If he gives “heavy” in the going description or indeed chooses not to do so in a marginal call, an independent panel will also assess the ground. The panel will decide whether there is heavy anywhere on the outer course, which would trigger the switch.

The inner track was used for the fixture in 2019, but went ahead as planned on the outer course last year despite conditions being very soft.

Nick Smith, director of racing and public affairs at Ascot, said, “Using the cambered outer course with wider bends is obviously the ideal on Qipco British Champions Day. However, following discussions with the BHA, there is agreement that racing on heavy ground, if it can be avoided, is best for the day as a whole. Importantly, we are not setting out to penalise horses that prefer cut in the ground, which more often than not will be the prevailing conditions in autumn. In all likelihood, when heavy is in the going description on the outer course, the inner course will still be predominantly soft. Given the potential sensitivity around a switch of surfaces in a marginal situation, Chris has recommended that an independent panel verifies his assessment on the day.”
