Wootton Bassett’s Midlife Crisis Another Rising Star in France

Following the precedent set by Petricor (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the previous race, Shigeo Nomura’s Midlife Crisis (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) posted a more straightforward display to earn a ‘TDN Rising Star‘ badge of his own in Tuesday’s Prix Le Bougnat, a 7 1/2-furlong newcomers’ test for colts and geldings, at Deauville. The 46-5 chance was away in second and quickly asserted for an early lead. Comfortably holding sway thereafter, he was shaken up in front passing the quarter-mile marker and powered ever clear under mild coaxing in the closing stages to easily outclass Bouttemont (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) by a geared-down five lengths.

“Midlife Crisis is a horse who I hold in very high esteem,” revealed winning trainer Hiroo Shimizu. “In my opinion, he has plenty of room for improvement and is capable of much more. I very much see him as a [G1] Prix du Jockey club horse for next year and the [Oct. 4 G1] Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere [over seven furlongs at ParisLongchamp] will be his target this season. He may have another race beforehand, but I keep in mind that he is ground dependent and needs it good or faster.”

Midlife Crisis, half-brother to a yearling filly by Siyouni (Fr), is the second foal and scorer out of a winning full-sister to G3 Geelong Cup victor and G1 South Australian Derby placegetter Runaway (Aus) (Manhattan Rain {Aus}). His dam The Hunt Is On (Aus) (Manhattan Rain {Aus}) is also half to G1 AJC Australian Oaks heroine Absolutely (Aus) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}), G1 Australasian Oaks victress Abbey Marie (Aus) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}) and to the dam of G2 S A Nursery winner Mount Pleasant (Aus) (Vancouver {Aus}) and Listed Adelaide Guineas third Quantum Mechanic (Aus) (Deep Field {Aus}). His second dam Catshaan (Aus) (Catrail) is a half-sister to MG1SW dual Japanese champion Kinshasa No Kiseki (Aus) (Fuki Kiseki {Jpn}) out of an unraced half-sister to G1 Prix Lupin-winning sire Groom Dancer (Blushing Groom {Fr}).

Olympic Glory’s Watch Me Wins the Rothschild

Alexander Tamagni-Bodmer and Regula Vannod’s Watch Me (Fr) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) had the obvious form claims for Sunday’s G1 Prix Rothschild at Deauville and all went to script for last year’s G1 Coronation S. winner as she outbattled Half Light (Ire) (Shamardal) and Know It All (GB) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) for the win. Tracking Godolphin’s Summer Romance (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) throughout the early stages, the 7-10 favourite got the split on the rail to edge ahead approaching the 300-metre marker and stayed on to score by 3/4 of a length from Half Light, who denied Know It All for second by a short head. “It was not easy today and we’ve been lucky the gap opened on the inside so we could save every inch of ground,” a relieved winning rider Pierre-Charles Boudot explained. “If I’d had to come around them, it might have been a very different outcome as she was struggling bit at the end. Maybe she needs further now.”

Watch Me came to the fore with success in the G3 Prix Imprudence over seven furlongs at Maisons-Laffitte last April and may have been unlucky when subsequently sixth in the G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches at ParisLongchamp the following month. Taken to the G1 Coronation S. in a daring move which demonstrated the regard in which she was held by Francis-Henri Graffard, she justified that bravery by upsetting Hermosa (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the Royal Ascot feature before earning a break. Back with a fourth in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois over this track and trip in August, the chestnut was trying 10 furlongs for the first time when beaten just under a length in third in the G1 Prix de l’Opera back at ParisLongchamp on Arc day.

Finely-tuned for this with a win in the course-and-distance Listed Prix de la Calonne July 12, she may have been fortunate that the rail opened up when it did as Summer Romance tired quickly but there were no excuses in behind and it would be hard to argue that she was not the best on the day. “She deserved this–it’s very hard to win two of these but she proved in the Opera in October that she was not finished,” Graffard commented. “She stays 10 furlongs, which gives her more options and we’ll see how she comes out of this. She can run in the Jacques le Marois, the [G1] Jean Romanet or the Opera. Every time she has been beaten, she has had a sound excuse and it’s a great credit to the team.”

Godolphin’s Lisa-Jane Graffard said of the up-and-coming runner-up, who was stepping up off a win in the G3 Hamburger Stutenmeile, “Half Light produced another fantastic performance and we are thrilled with her. She never runs a bad race and it was excellent work by her trainer to bring her back from Germany and get her fresh and ready for this. We will see how she comes out of today before deciding where we go from here, but everything she has done so far has been brilliant. She is by Shamardal and from the family of Galileo and Sea the Stars, so she has really exciting breeding potential for Godolphin.”

The dam Watchful (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is a half-sister to the group and grade 3-placed Rabi (Ire) (Alzao) and the G3 Coventry S.-placed Kawagino (Ire) (Perugino). The third dam Sharaya (Youth) landed the G1 Prix Vermeille and is also the ancestress of the G2 Centaur S. winner Sans Adieu (Jpn) (French Deputy), as well as of the listed scorer and G1 Nunthorpe S. runner-up Hamish McGonagall (GB) (Namid {GB}). Also connected to the G1 Irish Oaks heroine Shawanda (Ire) (Sinndar {Ire}) and the G1 Yorkshire Oaks and Vermeille heroine Shareta (Ire) (Sinndar {Ire}), her 2-year-old colt by the same sire named Watch Him (Fr) (Elvstroem {Aus}) was bought by Amanda Skiffington for €100,000 at the Arqana Deauville October Yearling Sale. Her yearling colt is again by Elvstroem.

Kendargent Filly Perfect in Deauville’s Prix Six Perfections

Andre Fabre incumbent See The Rose (Ire) (Kendargent {Fr}) got up late to prevail by a nose when posting a June 19 debut score tackling 5 1/2 furlongs at Chantilly, doubling up in a July 12 conditions heat over six at Deauville last time, and she made it a perfect three-for-three in Saturday’s G3 Prix Six Perfections Sky Sports Racing back at the Normandy venue. Stalking the pace set by Wedding Dance (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) after an alert getaway in this first try at seven furlongs, the 7-5 favourite was nudged along to launch her challenge off the home turn and kept on well under mild coaxing once gaining a slender advantage at the eighth pole to deny that rival by 3/4-of-a-length for a first black-type rosette. Coeursamba (Fr) (The Wow Signal {Ire}) ran on well from off the pace to finish a neck adrift in third.

“See The Rose is a lovely filly, she is sweet to be around and easy to train,” said trainer Andre Fabre, who saddled stablemate and subsequent G1 Cheveley Park S. third Tropbeau (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) to win this event last year. “She has class and will return here in the [G2] Prix du Calvados. So far she is the carbon copy of [subsquent Calvados winner] Tropbeau.”

See The Rose, a daughter of the dual stakes-placed Xaarienne (GB) (Xaar {GB}), is the sixth of seven foals and one of four winners from as many runners for her dam. She hails from the family of MG1SW G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains-winning champion L’Emigrant (The Minstrel) and G1SP G2 Great Voltigeur S. victor Zalazl (Roberto) and the February-foaled bay becomes the third stakes performer for Xaarienne. She is a full-sister to Listed Prix Francois Boutin victor Xaarino (Fr) and G3 Prix de Cabourg placegetter Mont Kiara (Fr) and half to a yearling filly by Lope de Vega (Ire). Xaarienne in herself kin to Sablonniere (Fr) (Verglas {Ire}), who in turn produced G3 Prix de Ris-Orangis victor King Malpic (Fr) (King’s Best) and last month’s Listed Prix Ridgway winner Dream Works (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}).

Siblings to 22 G1SWs Catalogued for Deauville Select Sale

The Arqana Deauville Select Sale, which contains full- or half-siblings to 22 Group 1 winners among its 492-strong catalogue, will take place in Deauville on Sept. 24-26. Graduates of the rescheduled sale-which is usually held as the Arqana August Sale–have made an impact on the international stage, with French Classic hero Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Ire}), G1SW Magic Wand (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and three-time American Grade I winner Uni (GB) (More Than Ready) among their number. Despite the difficulties presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, a total of 98 stallions are represented, while there are also 96 yearlings out of black-type winners.

Perennial champion sire Galileo has seven yearlings set to go under the hammer, including Ecurie des Monceaux colts out of G3 Prix Minerve heroine Golden Valentine (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}) (lot 103) from the family of Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa); a full-brother to Group 1 winner Magic Wand (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) as lot 199; and lot 230, out of a Cape Cross (Ire) half-sister to G1SW Plumania (GB) (Anabaa). La Motteraye Consignment brings a colt and filly, respectively, to the Deauville ring-lot 4 from GSP Zut Alors (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) and thus a half-brother to Classic heroine Precieuse (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}); and the first foal out of MGSW Realtra (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) (lot 203). He also is represented by a half-sister to G1SW Biz the Nurse (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}) (lot 34) from Allevamento Le Gi.

During the 2019 Arqana August Yearling Sale, 228 yearlings sold of 304 offered (75%), with an average of €187,671 and a median of €125,000. The aggregate was €42,789,000. Topping last year’s sale was the Dubawi (Ire)-Prudenzia (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) filly Philomene (Ire), who sold to Godolphin for €1,625,000 from the Ecurie des Monceaux draft.

Part 1 of the sale will take place on Sept. 24-25 beginning at 2 p.m. each day, while Part 2 of the sale will begin at 11 a.m. on Sept. 26.
