Gleneagles Colt Takes the Greffulhe

Fit from an Apr. 3 10 1/2-furlong conditions heat triumph at Saint-Cloud, Jean-Louis Bouchard's 3-year-old colt Baby Rider (Fr) (Gleneagles {Ire}) was back over that course and distance to win Saturday's G2 Prix Greffulhe. He had earlier bettered a Sept. 3 debut second tackling one mile at ParisLongchamp with an Oct. 16 maiden score back over that trip at Fontainebleau in his only other starts. Settled second early by Stephane Pasquier–in this staging post for Chantilly's June 6 G1 Prix du Jockey Club won by Study of Man (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in 2018–the Pascal Bary-trained 3-1 second choice began to get the upper hand over the long-time leader Smile Makers (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) from the furlong pole and battled to a neck success, with 11-10 pick Martial Eagle (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}) 2 1/2 lengths behind in third.

“His debut second last year, behind a future Group 3 winner, was very good indeed,” said trainer Pascal Bary. “I was slightly disappointed by his second start, which I thought he would win more easily, but he didn't handle the course too well at Fontainebleau. He had come on a lot on for his first win of the year when he won a conditions race here. He is easy to train, he has a lovely temperament and I think there is more improvement to come. He is a legitimate contender for the [June 6 G1] Prix du Jockey Club [at Chantilly].” Owner Jean-Louis Bouchard added, “All credit goes to Pascal Bary and to Gerard Larrieu, who selected him at the sales, and the jockey put the last touch nicely. It was a perfect team effort and the dream is still alive.”

Baby Rider, half-brother to a yearling filly by Cracksman (GB), becomes the fifth pattern-race winner for his sire (by Galileo {Ire}) and marks the first black-type scorer for Listed Prix Ceres third Gyrella (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), herself one of four stakes performers out of G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches placegetter Ysoldina (Fr) (Kendor {Fr}). Ysoldina, whose leading performer is G1 Epsom Derby hero Wings of Eagles (Fr) (Pour Moi {Ire}), is herself kin to G1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Belle et Celebre (Fr) (Peintre Celebre), MGSW Scandinavian champion and three-time G3 Stockholm Cup victor Appel Au Maitre (Fr) (Starborough {GB}) and MGSW G2 Premio Lydia Tesio and G2 Prix Jean Romanet victrix Whortleberry (Fr) (Starborough {GB}).

Haras de Bouquetot-Arqana Criterium Re-formatted

The Haras de Bouquetot-Arqana October Yearling Sale Criterium has been renamed the Haras de Bouquetot-Arqana Criterium, the sales company announced. Worth at least €200,000, the race, which was inaugurated in 2016, is now open to all 2-year-olds that were offered at the 2020 Arqana yealing sales-the Select Sale, October Yearling Sale, and Autumn Sale-Flat Yearlings. Open to 2-year-old colts, fillies and geldings, the race will be conducted over a mile at ParisLongchamp on Oct. 2, the day before the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

To register, owners must pay €650 prior to June 7, 2021, with entries for the race being made automatically by France Galop in September. It costs an additional €500 if a horse is declared to run. Prize money will be paid out to eighth place, with the purse of €200,000 being made up of a minimum sponsorship amount of €100,000 from Arqana to which the registrations are added. If the total sum of registrations exceeds €100,000, the overall prize money will be automatically increased. If not, Arqana will increase its sponsorship amount. In addition, Haras du Bouquetot will offer a covering by one of its stallions to the breeders of the first three past the post. For more information, please click here.

Arqana Breeze-Up Moved To Doncaster

For the second straight year, the Arqana Breeze-Up Sale will be staged at Goffs UK's Doncaster sales complex in light of coronavirus-inflicted travel restrictions. The sale was originally slated for Deauville on May 13 and 14, and will now take place at Doncaster on May 28, with the breeze show on May 26.

The decision to move the sale was prompted by the fact that 80% of the 2-year-olds catalogued are based in Ireland, and thus the personnel accompanying them to France would have had to undertake a strict two-week hotel quarantine. As has become customary since the pandemic began more than a year ago, telephone and internet bidding will also be available.

Arqana President Eric Hoyeau said, “First of all, we would like to acknowledge the flexibility and understanding of all our vendors in this situation. We were looking forward to a return of the Breeze Up to Deauville but in the current context and after having looked at all the possible solutions, the organisation of the sale at Doncaster will be much simpler for a large majority of them. We would also like to thank Goffs, whose entire UK team has adapted to accommodate our sale. As with last year, we will do everything possible to welcome everyone in the best possible conditions. We will also continue to offer many opportunities for buyers to bid who could not make the trip. The entire Arqana team remains at the disposal of both buyers and vendors to answer any questions and to help with their organisation.”

Siyouni’s Policy Of Truth Takes the Fontainebleau

Last year's G3 Prix des Chenes winner Policy of Truth (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) was giving another nod to Van Gogh (American Pharoah) on Sunday as he captured ParisLongchamp's G3 Prix de Fontainebleau. Last seen trailing that Ballydoyle blueblood when fourth in Saint-Cloud's G1 Criterium International in October, the imposing bay who races for Haras du Logis Saint Germain and trainer Pia Brandt tracked the leaders but needed room two out. Angled wide for his run by the G3 Prix la Grotte-winning jockey Maxime Guyon, the 9-1 shot overwhelmed the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere hero Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) at the furlong pole en route to a half-length success, with Summiter (Ire) (Bated Breath {GB}) 3/4 of a length away in third.
