Auctav To Offer Purplepay

Purplepay (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}), winner of the Haras de Bouquetot – Criterium Arqana on Saturday, will be offered as part of an Auctav Flash Sale on Friday, Oct. 8.

Trained by Cedric Rossi for Jean-Pierre-Joseph Dubois, Purplepay broke her maiden at third asking on Sept. 4 at Marseille Borely before following up in the race for graduates of the Arqana October Yearling Sale.

Arnaud Angeliaume, managing director of Auctav, said, “We thank Jean-Pierre Dubois for his trust. Our Auctav Flash Sale offers quality horses such as Purplepay a chance to be auctioned less than a week after her extraordinary performance. She will be part of the flash sale alongside Icone d'Aubrelle, a very

promising National Hunt 3-year-old gelding entrusted to us by Augustin Adeline de Boisbrunet and Frederic Boistier.”

Millionaire Penja Leads Arc Sale

A Group 3 winner and Group 2-placed, 3-year-old filly Penja (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) (lot 11) brought star quality to Saturday night's Arqana Arc Sale at Saint-Cloud Racecourse, and she duly topped proceedings at €1.2 million when Stuart Boman of Blandford Bloodstock prevailed over a remote bidder on Arqana's online platform. Boman noted Penja had been bought for German owner Jurgen Satori.

“We're very happy with the purchase,” Boman said. “She's an exceptional filly with a fantastic acceleration. We had to fight to get her but she's worth it. We're delighted.”

Penja remains engaged in Sunday's G1 Prix de l'Opera at ParisLongchamp.

Purchased by trainer Jean-Claude Rouget for €90,000 at Arqana October in 2019, Penja carried the colours of Daniel Yves-Treves to a victory at Marseille Borely last October. She won conditions races over a mile and two and a mile and one this season before stepping up to take the G3 Prix de Psyche at Deauville in August. She was a nose second in the G2 Prix de la Nonette back at that course on Aug. 21. She is a half-sister to the Listed Derby du Midi victor Taos (Fr) (Toronado {Ire}), while her dam, the unraced Just With You (Ire) (Sunday Break {Jpn}) is a full-sister to Dubai Group 2 winner Frankyfourfingers (Ire).

Arqana annually engages a select offering of horses in training with good current form for its boutique Arc sale on the eve of ParisLongchamp's flagship event. This time around, 34 horses offered. Nineteen sold for €4,975,000. The average was €261,842, and the median €160,000. Last year, 11 were sold from 19 offered for €3,050,000. The average was €277,273, and the median €260,000.

It was another 3-year-old from the Rouget yard, this time a colt, that generated the sale's second top price: Aga Khan Studs homebred Saiydabad (Blame) (lot 32) was knocked down to Emmanuel de Seroux's Narvick International for €575,000 and is bound for Saudi Arabia. The fourth foal out of the G3 Prix de Lieurey victress Sarkiyla (Fr) (Oasis Dream {GB}), Saiyabad won his first three starts this year before finishing fourth behind St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club and ninth in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris. Returning from a summer break on Sept. 5 and back down to 2000 metres, Saiydabad won the G3 Prix du Prince d'Orange, and the horse that has displayed an affinity for good going was sold off a seventh-place finish in Saturday's G2 Prix Dollar over the very soft ground.

As can generally be the case at a sale of this kind, there were a handful of high-profile buybacks, headed by progressive 3-year-old Partenit (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who was unsold at €775,000. Bellharbour Music (Mshawish), who had headed Partentit in the G3 Prix Daphnis on Aug. 21, similarly failed to find a new home at €550,000, while the Daphnis fifth Colosseo (Street Boss) was unsold at €575,000. Wildcard entry Lady Day (Fr) (Motivator {GB}), a listed winner this summer, was a €500,000 buyback.

Featuring among the 2-year-old offerings was Scherzo (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) (lot 24). The half-brother to group winners Calvados Blues (Fr) (Lando {Ger}) and Volta (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) won his first two races this summer for Yann Barberot and owner Malcolm Parrish, and was offered by Barberot off a recent second in the G3 Prix des Chenes. The €70,000 yearling was picked up by Charlie Gordon-Watson for €420,000.

German-based filly Tabera (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}) (lot 33) built on a pair of stakes victories last year at three when taking Baden-Baden's G3 Preis der Sparkassen Finanzgruppe by 3 3/4 lengths in August, and the 100,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling was picked up by Oceanic Bloodstock–on behalf of a syndicate of breeders managed by Haras des Capucines–on Saturday for €400,000.

Stakes Form On Offer At Arc Sale

The Arqana Arc Sale, staged each year on the evening preceding ParisLongchamp's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe card, has become a market leader among horses in training sales that offer a quick return on investment, and on Saturday horsepeople in Paris for the Arc will have the opportunity to head to Saint-Cloud Racecourse and make a bid on 40 horses with proven form, some of which have entries on Sunday's big card. Buyers have a chance, then, to source the next Lily's Candle (Fr); bought by Martin Schwartz through Oceanic Bloodstock for €390,000 at the 2018 Arc Sale, Lily's Candle defied odds of 28-1 to win the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac the very next day, and two months later was sold on once again to Katsumi Yoshida for €1.1-million at Arqana's December Sale. And even if the return isn't quite so immediate, horses like Coeursamba (Fr) (The Wow Signal {Ire})-bought for €400,000 at last year's sale before winning the 2021 G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches-show why owners have to have the Arc Sale on their radar. Sourced even more affordably from the Arc Sale were Devamani (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Stunning Spirit (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who each sold for €65,000 before going on to graded/group race success.

The catalogue boasts a particularly strong offering of 3-year-olds, and among those with Sunday entries at Longchamp are Penja (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) (lot 11) and Colosseo (Street Boss) (lot 38). Penja won conditions races at Deauville and Chantilly this season before returning to Deauville to take the 2000 metre G3 Prix de Psyche in August for trainer Jean-Claude Rouget, and she finished second by a nose in the Aug. 21 Prix de la Nonette. She has been declared for the G1 Prix de l'Opera.

Colosseo finished second to St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains before finishing fifth in the G1 Prix Jean Prat and G3 Prix Daphnis. He holds an entry in Sunday's G1 Prix de la Foret.

The top three finishers of the one-mile Prix Daphnis are in fact catalogued for the Arc Sale, including the progressive winner Bellharbour Music (Mshawish) (lot 37), and the runner-up Partenit (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) (lot 26), who was making just his second start at Deauville.

The Aga Khan Studs sold Devamani at this sale, and they bring what will be a coveted offering in 3-year-old colt Saiyabad (Blame) (lot 32). Rated 111, Saiyabad won his first three starts this spring before finishing fourth in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club. After a summer holiday, he won the G3 Prix du Prince d'Orange on Sept. 5 and could have a major update by Saturday evening, as he is set to contest Saturday's G2 Prix Dollar at ParisLongchamp. Adhamo (Ire) (Intello {Ger}) (lot 4) won the G3 Prix la Force over a mile and one in the spring and has since been placed in the G2 Prix Eugene Adam. This year's G3 Premio Parioli (Italian 2000 Guineas) winner Fayathaan (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) is offered as (lot 41)

Three-year-old filly Lady Day (Fr) (Motivator {GB}) (lot 15) is a wildcard entry; she won the Listed Prix La Sorellina in July before finishing fourth in the G3 Prix de Lieurey and the G3 Prix Bertrand de Tarragon.

Tabera (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}) (lot 33) is an intriguing offering among the older horses, the 4-year-old filly having won the Aug. 29 G3 Preis der Sparkassen Finanzgruppe after finishing fifth in the G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis-Bayerisches Zuchtrennen. Four-year-old Kaspar (Ger) (Pivotal {GB}) (lot 12) won the G2 Grosser Preis der RP Gruppe in June, and was most recently fifth in the G1 Preis von Europa.

Among the 2-year-olds that look to have plenty of upside are G3 Renate und Albrecht Woeste Zukunftsrennen S. runner-up Arnis Master (Ger) (Tai Chi {Ger}) (lot 36), who has been declared for Sunday's G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere; G3 Premio Primi Passi and G2 Prix Robert Papin second Baghed (GB) (Twilight Son {GB}) (lot 45); and Scherzo (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) (lot 24), runner-up in the G3 Prix des Chenes and a half to classy middle-distance runner Calvados Blues (Fr) (Lando {Ger}) and G2 Prix de Sandringham winner Volta (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}).

Selling gets underway at Saint-Cloud at 6:30 p.m.
