Lope de Vega’s Sweet Lady On Top in the Prix Corrida

Gemini Stud's Sweet Lady (Fr) (Lope de Vega {Ire}–High Heel Sneakers {GB}, by Dansili {GB}) posted a career high in October's G3 Prix de Flore at Saint-Cloud and lined up for Tuesday's G3 Prix Corrida back over the same 10 1/2-furlong distance at the Paris venue returning off a second in April's Listed Prix Lord Seymour at ParisLongchamp. The 5-2 second favourite adopted her usual patient tactics and was positioned off the tempo in fifth for the most part. Nudged along to close with 500 metres remaining, she quickened in smart fashion to launch her challenge entering the final furlong and was ridden out in the closing stages to assert superiority. Last term's Listed Prix La Camargo victrix and G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches fourth hit the line with a half-length advantage from Burgarita (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}).

“She is a very smart filly who is much more mature than she was last season,” explained trainer Francis-Henri Graffard. “We did well to run her over one-and-a-half miles last time to teach her more about how to settle and the experience did her a lot of good. We also we made the right decision to pass on the G3 Prix d'Hedouville and wait for this race. If only because we avoided fast ground and hot temperatures. The softer it is, the better it is for her and we are convinced that the second half of the season will give her more opportunities.  She will be entered in the [G1] Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud here and the [G1 Prix] Jean Romanet at Deauville, but there will be no rush to run if conditions are not suitable. The [G1] Yorshire Oaks are also a possibility and of course she is entered in the [G1] Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. We will take the time we need to decide what is next and, for the time being, she has enriched her resume and we're delighted.”

Sweet Lady is the last reported foal produced by Listed River Eden S. victrix and G2 May Hill S. runner-up High Heel Sneakers (GB) (Dansili {GB}), who also produced Listed Oaks Trial winner Toujours L'Amour (GB) (Authorized {Ire}). Sweet Lady's third dam Charmie Carmie (Lyphard) is the dam of MG1SW Peruvian champion Faaz (Fappiano) and her descendants also include G1 SA Fillies' Classic heroine Zaitoon (SAf) (Count Dubois {GB}). Charmie Carmie is kin to MGISW American Fillies' Triple Crown heroine Chris Evert (Swoon's Son), whose own descendants are headed by Belmont S.-winning sire Chief's Crown (Danzig), GI Frizette S. and GI Gazelle S. heroine Classic Crown (Mr. Prospector) and MGISW dual GI Beldame S. victrix Sightseek (Distant View). Charmie Carmie is also kin to stakes-winning GI Delaware Oaks third All Rainbows (Bold Hour), herself the dam of GI Kentucky Derby heroine and MGISW US champion Winning Colors (Caro {Ire}).

Just A Princess Tops Arqana Grand Steeple Sale

Arqana's Grand Steeple Sale at Saint-Cloud Racecourse grossed €2,313,000 with 29 lots sold from 35 (83%) through the ring. The Magdalen Bryant Dispersal accounted for €1,043,000 of that total, which consisted of the first 21 lots in the catalogue. The average was €79,759 and the median was €55,000.

An even 10 lots made six figures or better, and it was the AQPS Just A Princess (Fr) (Ivanhowe {Ger}) (lot 5), a member of trainer David Cottin's consignment and part of that dispersal, that topped the sale. The sophomore was knocked down for €260,000 on a bid from Anthony Bromley's Highflyer Bloodstock. She holds an entry into the G3 Prix Sagan at Saint-Cloud on Saturday.

Bromley was also in action for the second-highest lot on the day, the €200,000 Zarak The Brave (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) (lot 8). Offered by Stephane Wattel, the bay is already a winner on the Flat and will be sent to Willie Mullins to further his career in the National Hunt sphere.

After the sale, Bryant's daughter KC Graham said, “This is a very special day for us, full of emotion. What can I say, we are very happy with the results of this sale. The horses sold well, they were eagerly awaited and it's a great tribute to our mother and to David Powell. We loved David's genius, to whom we owe today's results.”

Outstrip’s Nadette Annexes ParisLongchamp’s Listed Prix Finlande

Team Valor International and Marco Saviozzi's 3-year-old filly Nadette (Fr) (Outstrip {GB}–Ciboulette {Ire}, by Pivotal {GB}) was two places behind subsequent G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Mangoustine (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) when fifth going one mile at ParisLongchamp in last month's G3 Prix de la Grotte and stepped forward to collect a career high in Thursday's Listed Prix Finlande upped to nine furlongs back at the Bois de Boulogne venue. The 32-5 chance, who also ran fifth in last term's G3 Prix des Reservoirs at Deauville, found a smooth rhythm off the pace in sixth after the initial exchanges. Rowed along in early straight with 500 metres remaining, she quickened smartly for control entering the final furlong and was not for catching under mild urging in the closing stages, keeping on strongly to easily hold Bahasa (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) by 1 1/2 lengths. The hitherto undefeated Yukata (Ire) (Galileo {Ire} was a head away in third, a short head in front of 'TDN Rising Star' Raclette (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in fourth.

“She ran a good race in the [G3] Prix de la Grotte and that is good form as we saw this last Sunday in the [G1 Poule d'Essai des] Pouliches,” said winning trainer Romain Le Dren Doleuze. “I was confident beforehand as I knew that she would love the extra furlong and the faster ground. She has an entry for next month's [G1] Prix de Diane and I have an idea as to what we should do next, but I will talk with the owners before revealing any future plans.”

Nadette is the second of four foals and lone scorer produced by a multiple-winning half-sister to Listed Lure S. victor Kencumin (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}). Her second dam Cumin (Fusaichi Pegasus), herself a full-sister to dual Grade III placegetter Obsequious, ran third in the G3 Prestige S. and is a granddaughter of MG1SW European Horse of the Year User Friendly (GB) (Slip Anchor {GB}). The April-foaled bay is kin to a 2-year-old colt by Kendargent (Fr) and a yearling filly by Al Wukair (Ire).
