New Bay’s Claymore Wins The Hampton Court

There was so much focus on The Queen's Reach For the Moon (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in the build-up to Thursday's G3 Hampton Court S., it had almost assumed the air of a foregone conclusion but in the final analysis the Royal runner was second-best to the G3 Craven S. runner-up Claymore (Fr) (New Bay {GB}). With Frankie's day about to get even worse, Adam Kirby set off in front on Mary Slack's 7-1 second favourite and refused to let the Gosden runner past when it came down to a straight fight in the final two furlongs. At the line, there was a 1 3/4-length margin back to the 2-5 favourite, who looked not to see out the 10-furlong trip, with Kingmax (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) a length behind in third.

Claymore, who had impressed with an emphatic debut win over seven at Newmarket in October in which My Prospero (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) was third, had returned with a second to Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) in the Craven which continues to grow in stature with each passing week. The third Hoo Ya Mal (GB) (Territories {Ire}) is now a well-known name following his Derby second, Kingmax was in fourth, the fifth-placed Star of India (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) took the Listed Dee S. and the one who was last of the six was Zechariah (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}) who went so close in Wednesday's G2 Queen's Vase here. For all the promise of his performance in that Newmarket contest, it seemed to be undone by Claymore's rank display from a coffin-box draw in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains at ParisLongchamp May 15 so it was a relief that he was able to pull it all together again.

Trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam is now on two winners for the week, which in terms of string size is nothing short of a remarkable tally. She said, “Claymore is in his comfort zone when he is up there bowling along in front. He has got a huge stride. Stepping up to 10 furlongs has helped him. It is lovely that Mary Slack has come over from South Africa for today and he will be able to stand at one of her studs. There is no plan at the moment. Wherever Mary wants to go, I'll send him.” The owner added, “We thought he would run well in the French Guineas, but he was hopeless from a terrible draw. This was the return. I have never been to these heights before.”

John Gosden suggested that a drop in trip could be next for Reach For the Moon. “The mother was very, very fast, so perhaps we've run him beyond his trip,” he commented. “I'm not sure he quite stayed it out, but we'll see–it could well be a possibility. He's never run over that trip before. He ran a great race first time back in the Heron Stakes and My Prospero franked the form in the St James's Palace, so we may well be dealing with a horse who only stays a stiff mile. I don't know.”

Claymore is out of the unraced Brit Wit (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}), who is a daughter of the Listed Harvest S. winner and G2 Park Hill S.-placed Brisk Breeze (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}). The third dam Bela-M (Ire) (Ela-Mana-Mou {Ire}) took the Listed Nereide-Rennen and was third in the G3 Prix Fille de l'Air. The dam's unraced 2-year-old filly Uniqa (Fr) (Cloth of Stars {Ire}) is followed by a yearling filly by Amaron (GB) named Baroness von Aesch (Ger) and a filly foal by Areion (Ger).

No Nay Never’s Little Big Bear Best In The Windsor Castle

The subject of a momentous gamble in Wednesday's Listed Windsor Castle S., Ballydoyle's Little Big Bear (Ire) (No Nay Never–Adventure Seeker {Fr}, by Bering {GB}) duly delivered to maintain the 100% record of the TDN Rising Stars in Royal Ascot's two-year-old contests. Hammered into 6-5 favouritism to get Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore off the mark for the week, the impressive Naas maiden winner raced near the pace far side before being sent forward with hands and heels passing halfway. In the end, the imposing bay had to fight to fend off the stand's-side winner Rocket Rodney (GB) (Dandy Man {Ire}) but was equal to the task to score by a neck, with Eddie's Boy (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) 1 3/4 lengths back in third. “It was a good performance from a horse who is still learning,” Moore said. “He was out on the wing and the horses in the middle were ahead–he got a bit lonely, but he has plenty of ability. He is a big horse and I thought he did that comfortably. I know he didn't win by far, but there was more in the locker.”

Runner-up by a short head to the subsequent G3 Marble Hill S. runner-up Tough Talk (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) and ahead of future winner Shartash (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) on debut at The Curragh Apr. 10, Little Big Bear dealt with the drop to this trip without fuss when dominating his maiden from the well-regarded Joseph O'Brien-trained Alexis Zorba (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}) at Naas May 7. The extent of the money flow in his direction leading up to the off spoke volumes about the expectation surrounding him and he was carrying that weight looking to provide Aidan O'Brien with the Royal Ascot winner the form of his juveniles seemed to suggest was a formality this Spring.

Rosegreen's two-year-olds are never hard-baked for this meeting and there were a few moments when Little Big Bear needed encouragement from Moore before halfway as several appeared to be travelling sweeter across the track. It was only as he approached the furlong marker that the sizeable colt began to emerge as one of the chief protagonists and by the time he had got to half a furlong out he had the measure of Rocket Rodney who was a few horse-widths out of range. “He was drawn a little away from the pace, but we were delighted with him,” O'Brien said. “He should get further in the future and is in the Phoenix Stakes. He is a big horse. It is obviously a very fast race and horses need to know a lot in it and be very educated. He had only had the two runs, so we were a bit worried about that, but we're delighted really.”

Little Big Bear is bred to stay much further on the dam's side, with the Listed Prix de Liancourt winner, G3 Prix Cleopatre runner-up and GI E P Taylor S. fourth Adventure Seeker being a granddaughter of the legendary All Along (Fr), the French champion and US Horse of the Year in 1983 courtesy of her G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, GI Turf Classic, G1 Rothmans International and GI Washington D. C. International victories. A half to the precocious but ill-fated G3 Princess Margaret S. third Along Again (Ire) (Elusive City), she produced Andrea Mantegna (Giant's Causeway) who was second in the 12-furlong G3 Hobart Cup. Also connected to the G3 Prix du Muguet winner and G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains-placed Art Francais (Lyphard's Wish {Fr}), the dam's yearling is a full-brother to Little Big Bear.

Dubawi’s Eldar Eldarov Edges The Queen’s Vase

Wednesday's G2 Queen's Vase was staged over 14 furlongs, but it took a pixel study for the judge to call it as TDN Rising Star Eldar Eldarov (GB) inched out Zechariah (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}) to continue the fine week for Dubawi (Ire). KHK Racing's unbeaten colt had launched his season with a win over 10 furlongs on Newcastle's Tapeta May 24, but Roger Varian had plumped for this staying test of all the options here and ultimately was fully justified as the £480,000 Arqana Breeze Up graduate needed every yard to get in front. Anchored towards the rear of mid-division early by David Egan, the 5-2 favourite had plenty of ground to make up on Zechariah from the top of the straight as Colin Keane struck for home, but his stirring finale saw him take it from that rival on the line. While the official nose margin seemed too vast a measurement, there was a relatively gaping neck back to Hafit (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in third as they drew clear of the remainder. “I have never hit the line so strong in a mile and six-furlong race and ended up by the St James's Palace Stakes start,” Egan said. “He was full of running. Stamina is his biggest attribute–we always thought he was a horse who would also like ease in the ground, so there is a lot more to come.”

Roger Varian, who had introduced the winner over an extended mile at Nottingham in October, had also been worried about the fast conditions and commented, “The ground was a concern because Eldar Eldarov is so inexperienced and I thought, on fast ground, he looks like a horse laden with lots of stamina so let's go the distance. There was a lot of chat about him in the winter because he'd won at Nottingham in a similar style to the Derby winner and of course we were excited about him and hoping to get him to a Derby trial, but the horse just didn't thrive in the spring. We went to Newcastle, where I think he was only 90% and that was a strong novice.”

“There is a lot to come from this horse and I think his best days are ahead of him. He put in one hell of a performance and you would think looking down the road that he could develop into a St Leger horse. Even looking to next year, hopefully he can keep improving. I'm delighted for KHK, Sheikh Khalid [ bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa] and everyone involved. They are supporting the industry very strongly, they are supporting me. Days like this are very special to all of us and to get the horse home in front with a lot of expectations is very satisfying.”

Trainer Martyn Meade had to suffer the agony of losing out in the bobber and said of Zechariah, “A mile and six furlongs and you think crikey, I don't need to lose by that! That's racing for you! We have been waiting to run him over this sort of distance and have been building up to this. The betting did not show it, but we had a lot of faith coming into this and he looked as though he'd been well placed at one stage. Today was a bit of an experiment to see if our judgment had been right and he would get the trip. It opens up a whole new array of opportunities. He could have Cup hopes in time. Travelling to Australia could be an option with Aquis involved. They have horses with us to run them here, but he might be better there in time.”

Eldar Eldarov is the third of five foals and the second scorer out of Kirsten Rausing's Listed Prix de Liancourt, Listed Prix Zarkava and Listed Prix de la Pepiniere winner All At Sea (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}). Also responsible for the Listed Rothesay S.-placed A La Voile (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), she is one of five black-type performers produced by the G1 Deutschlandpreis, G1 Rheinland-Pokal and G1 Preis von Europa heroine Albanova (GB) (Alzao), who is a full-sister to the dual G1 Champion S. heroine Alborada (GB) and a half to the dam of Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}) who brought up her own German group 1 treble last term in the Grosser Preis von Berlin, Grosser Preis von Bayern and Preis von Europa. All At Sea's 2-year-old colt Kingswood (GB) (Roaring Lion) was bought by Glyn Davies for €130,000 at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale, while she also has a yearling filly by Study of Man (Ire).

Nine Wild Cards Added To Arqana Summer Sale

The Arqana Summer Sale grew by nine lots, as more wild cards were added on Tuesday. One of the new lots, the Bated Breath (GB) horse Makaloun (Fr) (lot 236a), will be offered by The Aga Khan Studs. The dual Group 3 winner was also third in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud. Haras des Capucines will send Tosia (Ger) (Big Shuffle) (lot 295A) through the ring. She is already the dam of listed winner Think of Me (Ger) (So You Think {NZ}) and the 14-year-old is in foal to Zelzal (Fr). Another wild card is the Listed Prix Isonomy runner-up Saving Grace (Fr) (Almanzor {Fr}) (lot 440) from the Fabrice Chappet yard. Rounding out the Flat lots is Style Beauty (Fr) (Style Vendome {Fr}) (lot 441), who was second in the Listed Prix Caravelle. Consigned by Satoshi Kobayashi, she is from the family of Grade I winner A P Valentine (A.P. Indy).
