Areion’s Calif Too Good In The Oettingen-Rennen

Stall Hanse's Calif (Ger) (Areion {Ger}–Cherry Danon {Ire}, by Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}), who ran sixth in two Group 3 starts after annexing May's G3 45th Kronimus Badener Meile at Baden-Baden, returned over the same one-mile strip of that stakes breakthrough to double his pattern-race tally in Sunday's G2 90th Brunner Oettingen-Rennen at the Iffezheim venue.

The 17-2 chance occupied a slot in rear after a slightly tardy getaway and remained there through halfway. Shaken up when sent wide into the straight, he made relentless headway from the two pole to launch his challenge entering the final furlong and surged clear in style thereafter to ward off British raider Brave Emperor (Ire) (Sioux Nation) by 2 1/2 lengths.

“We had a great trip throughout the race and were able to bide our time for as long as necessary,” winning rider Rene Piechulek told GaloppOnline. “Even though it may have not appeared that way, it was never close for us and he just makes a huge effort on that ground.”

Pedigree Notes
Calif is a son of G3 Hamburger Stutenmeile victrix and G2 German 1000 Guineas runner-up Cherry Danon (Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}) and thus kin to the stakes-winning trio Celebrity (Ger) (Shamardal), Chilly Filly (Ger) (Makfi {GB}) and Cherry Lady (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}). One of his sire's 31 pattern-race winners, he is also a half-brother to the unraced 2-year-old filly Cherry Lou (Ger) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and a weanling filly by Mehmas (Ire). The April-foaled dark bay's second dam Sherifa (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) is a full-sister to the stakes-winning dam of three black-type winners headed by MGSW sire Sommerabend (GB) (Shamardal). From the dam line of legendary champion Schwarzgold (Ger) (Alchimist {Ger}), this is a family which includes GI Hollywood Turf Cup hero Sanagas (Ger) (Lomitas {GB}) and G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin winner Sirius (Ger) (Dashing Blade {GB}).

A Ghaiyyath (Ire) half-brother to 2022 G1 Deutsches Derby hero Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) arrived on Tuesday.

Rubaiyat To Stand At Gestut Ohlerweiherhof In 2023

Rubaiyat (Fr) (Areion {Ger}–Representera {GB}, by Lomitas {GB}), a group winner at two, three, four, and five years, will stand at Gestut Ohlerweiherhof in Germany next year, Jour de Galop reported. His fee will be €4,500.

Bred by Gestut Karlshof, he was a €26,000 BBAG August yearling. In the colours of Darius Racing, the Henk Grewe trainee was a multiple group winner in both France and Italy. As a juvenile, he won the G2 Gran Criterium and the G3 Preis des Winterfavoriten, and the G3 Dr. Busch-Memorial went his way as a sophomore. In 2021, he scored in the G2 Premio di Capua Vittorio, and this year, he signed off his 25-start career in the G3 Premio Ribot last month. Earning north of $650,000, Rubaiyat placed in another 10 group races throughout his racing days.

A half-brother to French listed winner Rose Flower (Ger) (Dabirsim {Fr}), the 5-year-old counts G3 Prix d'Aumale heroine Joyeuse Entree (GB) (Kendor {Fr}) as his second dam. Besides foaling his winning dam Representera, she also produced G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains hero Tin Horse (Ire) (Sakhee) and the listed winner and group-placed Becomes You (GB) (Lomitas {GB}). Two-time group winner Jadoomi (Fr) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), also placed twice at the highest level, is out of a winning full-sister to Tin Horse.

Group 3 Winner By Areion Tops The BBAG Spring Sale at €52,000

Friday's BBAG Mixed Breeze-Up Sale featured 89 lots, and it was the 2021 G3 Kalkmann Fruhjahrs-Meile hero Zavaro (Ger) (Areion {Ger}) (lot 64) who took top honours at €52,000. Knocked down to Stall Villa Medici, he was a member of the Gestut Ohlerweiherhof draft. From the extended family of Group 1 winners Intense Focus (Giant's Causeway) and Skitter Scatter (Scat Daddy), the 5-year-old was most recently seen running second in Thursday's G2 Kronimus Badener Meile.

Second on the buyers' sheets was the Gestut Brummerhof-consigned Promised (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) (lot 89). HFTB Racing shelled out €38,000 for the daughter of listed winner Promesse de l'Aube (Fr) (Galileo {Ire}), who herself is a foal of Preis de Diane-placed White Rose (Ger) (Platini {Ger}).

A juvenile filly by Cloth of Stars (Ire) led the way in the 2-year-old portion of the sale, catching the eye of Laetitia Domenig for €32,000. Lot 79, from the Renello Bloodstock Agency, is out of Lightning Debut (Pivotal {GB}).

Overall, 56 sold from 76 offered (73%) for a gross of €586,500. The average improved 26% to €10,473 and the median was $10,111 (+19%).
