Leading French Sophomore Sealiway Prepares To Take On Arc De Triomphe

The 3-year-old Sealiway will tackle the Group 1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Paris-Longchamp on Sunday, Oct. 2. The Arc is a “Win and You're In” for the Breeders' Cup Turf at Del Mar; Sealiway competed at the 2020 Breeders' Cup at Keeneland, finishing fifth in the Juvenile Turf.

He will be making his comeback in the race, having not been out since his second place in the Qatar Prix du Jockey Club (Group 1), the French Derby, on June 6 at Chantilly.

The best French 3-year-old, Sealiway carries the colors of the Haras de la Gousserie, who race him in partnership with Guy Pariente, his breeder. He is trained in the South-East, at Calas, by Cédric Rossi.

“Sealiway is going to go to the Arc, if all goes well between now and the big day,” said Pauline Chehboub, communications director for Haras de la Gousserie. “So far we are happy with his preparation. It looks like we are heading for an Arc with few runners. His morning rider has a good feeling: and thinks he's good, if not better than before the Jockey-Club. Sealiway did a gallop at Salon-de-Provence last Friday, where race conditions were replicated, and he was also schooled in the paddock. That put him back in the zone. He is in good condition. The choice of his jockey has not yet been made.”

Sealiway will be the first Gousserie runner in the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, which also applies to his trainer, Cédric Rossi. The colt was the best French 2-year-old in 2020: as on the day of the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, he excelled in the Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère (Group 1), which traditionally crowns the best French juvenile. He gave the Chehboub family their first French Group 1 win that day. The Chehboub family had already won at the highest level, but in the US: in 2008, when their representative Spirit One won one of the most coveted races of the US calendar: the Arlington Million.

Alenquer’s Connections ‘Keen’ To Enter Colt In Arc De Triomphe

The connections of the British 3-year-old colt Alenquer have been toying with the idea of a crack at the Group 1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe since the spring. Armando Duarte, the racing manager of the colt's owners, MM Stables, has subsequently confirmed, via the Racing Post, that the colt will line-up at ParisLongchamp on Sunday, Oct. 3.

He said: “The owners, Mubarak Alarou and Mussad Almutari, are keen to have a crack at the Arc as Alenquer is a mile-and-a-half horse, and he will handle any eventual cut in the ground. He's been in good shape since York. Obviously, it's a tough assignment but we're hopeful that he'll run a nice race.”

Alenquer is a colt with an international dimension. As his owners hail from Kuwait and he is trained in Britain, or Newmarket to be precise, by William Haggas. Furthermore, his breeders, the Gestüt Romerhof, are German. He was born and reared in France, and notably in Normandy, as he bears the hallmark of the La Motteraye Consignment.

Alenquer is unraced since his second place in the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes at York on Aug. 18, when he finished six lengths adrift of Mishriff. The latter is a possible Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe contender. He had previously finished third in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris over 12 furlongs at ParisLongchamp, won by one of the leading fancies for this year's Arc, Hurricane Lane.

Another formline also ties Alenquer in with another leading Arc fancy: as he beat Adayar in the Group 3 Classic Trial at Sandown in April. Adayar has since franked the form by winning both the Epsom Derby and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (both G1s). The latter race also rejoices in the reputation of being the British equivalent of the Arc.

Alenquer is quoted at odds varying from 25-1 to 40-1 by the bookmakers for the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Snowfall Dominates Yorkshire Oaks En Route To Arc De Triomphe

Aidan O'Brien looks to have racing's next superstar in his ranks – as Snowfall made light work of Thursday's Group 1 Darley Yorkshire Oaks. The daughter of Deep Impact will receive an automatic berth into the US$2 million Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) through the international Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.

Having demolished her rivals in both the Cazoo Oaks and the Irish Oaks, O'Brien's filly was sent out a heavy favorite for Darley Yorkshire Oaks. And she certainly did not disappoint.

Ryan Moore kept Snowfall at the back, ridden quietly throughout the race. Stable companion La Joconde ensuring there was a good gallop throughout the race under Hollie Doyle. Turning the corner the runners came back to stands, and push came to shove on La Joconde, with Wonderful Tonight beginning to make her move.

Gasps from the York crowd rang out, as Snowfall, with consummate ease breezed her way through the field. In a matter of moments she was upside and past Wonderful Tonight – seemingly in third gear.

Ryan Moore then nudged her to press on and put the race to bed before easing her way to the line with all the dangers long behind her.

It was a special performance from a filly who looks set to go on to big things.

After the race Aidan O'Brien was in buoyant mood as he spoke about the next stage in the filly's career, he said: “She's gone very laid-back, putting on weight and starting to thrive. She's ready for the autumn. She could have another race before the Arc, if the lads want to do that.”

Breeders’ Cup Winner Tarnawa Remains In Training, To Target 2021 Arc De Triomphe

The Aga Khan's 4-year-old Breeders' Cup Turf winner Tarnawa will remaining in training through her 5-year-old season, according to the Irish Times. The daughter of Shamardal gave trainer Dermot Weld his first Cup winner this year, and the trainer hopes to target the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 2021.

“The plan is for Tarnawa to stay in training next year, which is good news,” Weld told the Irish Times. “We will look forward to training her for [an] autumn campaign again which will hopefully include the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.”

An eight-time winner from 14 career starts, Tarnawa has three G1 wins to her name.
