America’s Day At The Races Telecast Features Sunday Racing From Aqueduct, Oaklawn

America's Day at the Races, the acclaimed national telecast produced by the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) in partnership with FOX Sports, will air coverage on Sunday featuring live racing action from Aqueduct Racetrack and Oaklawn Park.

Presented by America's Best Racing and Claiborne Farm, America's Day at the Races will broadcast Sunday from 2-6:30 p.m. Eastern, with coverage on FS2 from 2-2:30 p.m. and four hours of coverage – 2:30-6:30 p.m. – on FS1.

Sunday at Oaklawn will feature a 10-race card, starting at 2 p.m. Eastern time at the Hot Springs, Arkansas-based track. A $62,500 allowance contest for 3-year-olds going six furlongs in Race 9 at 6:10 p.m will see an eight-horse field, including a pair of contenders for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen in Molto Vivace, who broke his maiden last out on February 27 at Oaklawn, and Saffa's Day, a $125,000 purchase at the 2020 Ocala Breeders' Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. Fellow Hall of Fame conditioner D. Wayne Lukas will saddle Cold as Hell, who broke his maiden at third asking over the same track on February 26.

Aqueduct's Sunday card, which features a first post of 1:20 p.m. for the eight-race program, will offer an $80,000 six-furlong maiden sprint for sophomores in Race 4 at 2:50 p.m. Four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown will send out two challengers in Take a Chance and Secret Potion, while King James will make his debut for trainer Jimmy Jerkens.

In Race 5, a field of six New York-bred fillies and mares 3-years-old and up will challenge in a $74,000 six-furlong allowance optional-claiming sprint at 3:20 p.m. Trainer Bruce Levine will saddle Quality Stones and Impazible Donna, while Rudy Rodriguez will see Baby Boss look for success in drawing the inside post.

America's Day at the Races is also broadcast on NYRA's YouTube channel which boasts more than 65,000 subscribers. Aqueduct, Oaklawn Team Up For Cross Country Pick 5 On Saturday

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday featuring racing action from Aqueduct Racetrack and Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

A field of maiden fillies competing with a $50,000 tag at Oaklawn Park begins the sequence. Carded as Race 6 with a 4:42 p.m. Eastern post, the six-furlong event features Danny Caldwell's Northern Diamond, who is coming off a career-best effort when second as the beaten favorite. She will be making her first start for new connections after being claimed for $40,000 last out.

Action shifts to Aqueduct for the second leg in Race 8 at 4:55 p.m. with a six-furlong state-bred optional-claiming tilt. Roddy Valente's Bustin Timberlake seeks a second straight victory against New York-breds over the Big A main track. Trained by Charlton Baker, the son of Bustin Stones was an emphatic 6 ¾-length winner last out, earning a career-best 99 Beyer Speed Figure. The Players Group's Steam Engine will be seeking his third straight triumph for trainer Antonio Arriaga.

Oaklawn will host the middle leg when an 11-horse field assembles for a six-furlong claiming sprint in Race 7 at 5:15 p.m. Hansens Mischief was made the 7-2 lukewarm favorite for the event and arrives off a fourth-place finish against starter allowance company at the Arkansas oval. Heisfancy also seeks to regain form for trainer Karl Broberg, seeking his first triumph since a score over the all-weather surface at Arlington Park four starts back.

Irresistible Girl will hope the third time is the charm in Aqueduct's ninth-race finale at 5:26 p.m. The daughter of Tapiture will compete as part of a nine-horse field of sophomore filly New York-bred maidens going six furlongs. Trained by Brad Cox and owned by Madaket Stable, Wonder Stable and Robert LaPenta, Irresistible Girl was third, beaten a length last out going a one-turn mile at the Aqueduct.

Summer Brew will attempt to add a victory to a consistent record of 6-0-3-1. Owned by NY Final Furlong Racing Stable and Maspeth Stable and trained by Jorge Abreu, the daughter of Summer Front has kept classy company in the maiden ranks finishing behind subsequent stakes winners Samborella, Make Mischief and Party At Page's as well as stakes-placed Rossa Veloce.

Oaklawn Park hosts the Cross Country Pick 5's finale, when an overflow field of sophomores chase their first career win for a $50,000 tag. Winchell Thoroughbreds' Megatap sports blinkers after two close runner-up placings for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. Highland Yard's Lazaretto takes a drop in class for trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. after finishing tenth off a slow start in hia February 27 debut over a sloppy track at Oaklawn Park. The six-furlong event will go off at 5:47 p.m. in Race 8.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country. O’Neill Believes Distance Should Help Wipe The Slate In Saturday’s Gotham

Navigating the competitive Kentucky Derby trail will force any 3-year-old to eventually branch beyond an established comfort zone, as steeper competition, expanded race distances and more extensive travel becomes necessary as the first Saturday in May approaches.

Reddam Racing's Wipe the Slate will look to embrace those challenges, shipping across the country from his base at Santa Anita in California to compete in Saturday's Grade 3, $300,000 Gotham at Aqueduct Racetrack.

The one-turn mile will offer 50-20-10-5 Derby qualifying points to the top-four finishers and will mark Wipe the Slate's first race outside of the Golden State. The Doug O'Neill trainee ran second in his debut going 6 1/2 furlongs on Nov. 22 at Del Mar before breaking his maiden with an impressive 3 ¼-length score in a seven-furlong sprint on Dec. 26 at Santa Anita to cap his juvenile campaign.

Making his sophomore – and graded stakes debut – Wipe the Slate was stretched out to 1 1/16 miles for his first career route. After bumping a rival, he underwent a wide trip before tiring late, finishing sixth in the Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis on Jan. 30 at Santa Anita.

Wipe the Slate has continued to train forwardly since that effort, including a six-furlong work in 1:11.60 on Saturday over the Santa Anita main track. A son of Nyquist, O'Neill's 2016 Kentucky Derby winner, Wipe the Slate will look to benefit from a five-week gap between starts. O'Neill said he expects the Kentucky-bred to handle shipping to the Empire State with aplomb and likes how cutting back to a mile could play to his strength.

“He's always been an impressive colt,” said O'Neill. “I think he'll travel well and I love the one-turn mile for him. We're excited for days ahead.”

O'Neill said Kendrick Carmouche, the current Aqueduct winter meet-leading rider, will pick up the mount for the Gotham.

The Gotham, which will have its 69th running this coming weekend, has historical strong connections to the “Run for the Roses,” with Secretariat winning it in 1973, tying the track record in an effort that helped propel him to one of the most famous Triple Crown runs in the sport's history. Other highlights include Easy Goer setting a track record in the 1989 edition, setting a mark of 1:32.40 that still stands.

While both Secretariat and Easy Goer are Hall of Famers, O'Neill has the potential to join them among the inductees, as the veteran conditioner was named one of 11 finalists for the 2021 National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame class on Wednesday.

O'Neill, primarily based in California, is one of three trainers among the finalists, along with NYRA mainstays Todd Pletcher and Christophe Clement. The 52-year-old O'Neill is a two-time Derby winner in tandem with Reddam Racing, saddling I'll Have Another [who also won the Preakness] in 2012 and following four years later with Nyquist, who ran third in the 2016 Preakness.

O'Neill, who trained his first winner in 1989, has five Breeders' Cup victories to his credit, bolstering a strong resume that features more than 2,500 career wins, including 132 graded stakes. Among his other notable winners was Hall of Famer Lava Man, who won the Hollywood Gold Cup three times and twice both the Santa Anita Handicap and Pacific Classic. Five of his horses have won Eclipse Awards. In addition to his dozens of stakes victories in this country, O'Neill has also tallied international victories in the Godolphin Mile and Japan Cup Dirt.

“The Hall of Fame nomination is a result of working alongside a bunch of amazing horsemen and amazing owners and, of course, amazing horses,” said O'Neill.

‘Acting Like He’s Three’: Ageless Mr. Buff Returns In Saturday’s Stymie

Chester and Mary Broman's New York-bred legend Mr. Buff will attempt to notch his 11th career stakes victory in Saturday's 65th running of the $125,000 Stymie contested at a one-turn mile at Aqueduct Racetrack.

The 7-year-old son of Friend Or Foe has put together a notable resume, which includes back-to-back wins in the Alex M. Robb at Aqueduct in 2018-19 and Empire Classic at Belmont Park in 2019-20 as well as victories in the 2019 Saginaw and Evan Shipman and the 2020 Haynesfield at the Big A, which he won by an astounding 20 lengths while recording a 106 Beyer Speed Figure.

Mr. Buff arrives at the Stymie off a seven-length romp in the nine-furlong Jazil on Jan. 23, which he won for the third straight year in a stellar 2021 bow. The sizable homebred, who sports a 43-16-8-4 lifetime record, has banked $1,295,786 in earnings while boasting a highly consistent 16-9-4-0 ledger at Aqueduct.

Mr. Buff has trained forwardly for conditioner John Kimmel since earning a 102 Beyer for his Jazil score. He has breezed three times over the Belmont training track, most recently a half-mile move in :48.40 on February 20.

“He's doing fine and even though he's seven he's acting like he's three. He's handling everything really well right now,” said Kimmel, who won the 2001 Stymie with Windrush.

Kimmel said that Mr. Buff's optimal conditions include the freedom to get into his own rhythm and avoid being forced into speed duels.

“He's got good tactical speed, but the times he's gotten in trouble is when he's been pushed past his comfort zone and intent on going to the lead,” Kimmel said. “As he has shown in races past, he has been able to sit behind horses that have shown a little more speed. That's key to this race being an eighth of a mile shorter. There might be a little more pace in there. He's always been a good gate horse. The most important thing is getting him to find his rhythm in the first part of the race.”

Jockey Manny Franco will ride Mr. Buff from post 3.

Runnymoore Racing's Alwaysmining ships to New York from Laurel Park for trainer Austin Trites, who saddled the son of Stay Thirsty to a one-mile optional-claiming score on January 30 at Laurel Park. The 10-time winner of 24 starts has won at least two stakes races in his last three seasons, which began with a pair of juvenile victories in the Maryland Juvenile Futurity and the Heft in December 2018 at Laurel while under the care of trainer Kelly Rubley.

Alwaysmining's sophomore campaign encompassed victories in the 2019 Miracle Wood, Private Terms and the Federico Tesio at the Maryland oval before a distant 11th in the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico.

In 2020, Alwaysmining kicked off his 4-year-old campaign with two more stakes victories, beating fellow Maryland-breds in the Jennings before stepping to open company in the John Campbell, where he garnered a career-best 101 Beyer.

Despite capturing most of his stakes wins in frontrunning fashion, Alwaysmining registered his most recent victory coming from fifth, four lengths off the pace, and was in command inside the eighth pole kicking clear to a three-length win last month.

Jorge Vargas, Jr. has the mount from post 5.

Michael Dubb's Musical Heart will try and build on stakes black type from his last two efforts for trainer Rob Atras.

The 6-year-old Maclean's Music chestnut was claimed by Atras for $62,500 following a close second to Backsideofthemoon going nine furlongs on November 13 over a sloppy and sealed Aqueduct main track. He followed up with a more distant second to his familiar foe in the Queens County on December 19 before finishing third in the Jazil behind winner Mr. Buff.

Musical Heart, who has placed in seven of his last eight starts, will break from post 2 under Dylan Davis.

Completing the field are Brian and Kerry Novak Inc.'s Limonite [post 4, Eric Cancel], who is fresh off a five-length allowance score going nine furlongs at Aqueduct for trainer Amira Chichakly; and John O'Connor's Tintoretto [post 1, Trevor McCarthy], a German-bred who seeks his first triumph in North America for trainer Tom Albertrani.

The Stymie is slated as Race 3 on Saturday's nine-race card. First post is 1:05 p.m. Eastern.

The race honors Ethel D. Jacobs' 1945 Champion Older Horse, who captured some of New York's marquee events such as the Whitney, the Metropolitan Handicap and the Manhattan. Campaigned by Hall of Famer Hirsch Jacobs during his prosperous years, Stymie retired with $918,475 in earnings and a record of 131-35-33-28. He was elected to the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in 1975.
