NYRA Extends Belmont Park Fall Meet Through November 7

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) today announced that the fall meet at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., originally scheduled to conclude on October 31, will be extended to include three additional dates from Friday, November 5 through Sunday, November 7. These dates were originally scheduled to be run at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, N.Y., as the opening weekend of the Aqueduct fall meet.

New York State is continuing to operate a COVID-19 mass vaccination site throughout the first floor of Aqueduct. As a result, the facility remains closed to the public. In order to accommodate racing fans who would ordinarily experience the Breeders' Cup World Championships – slated for November 5-6 at Del Mar – via simulcast at Aqueduct, NYRA will shift the first three days of the Aqueduct fall meet to Belmont Park.

“NYRA is committed to supporting the ongoing effort to vaccinate New York, and Aqueduct Racetrack is an important piece of that puzzle,” said NYRA President & CEO Dave O'Rourke. “This schedule adjustment provides our fans the opportunity to experience world-class racing on-track while enjoying Breeders' Cup weekend at Belmont Park.”

Belmont Park will host five stakes originally scheduled for Aqueduct, beginning with the $150,000 Tempted and $100,000 Atlantic Beach on Friday, November 5. On Saturday, November 6, the stakes action will include the $150,000 Grade 3 Turnback the Alarm Handicap and the $100,000 Stewart Manor. The extended Belmont fall meet will now conclude on Sunday, November 7 with the $150,000 Grade 3 Nashua.

The 15-day Aqueduct fall meet will now begin on Thursday, November 11, and continue through Sunday, December 5. A limited number of licensed owners, trainers, and staff will be permitted on-site at Aqueduct. NYRA will provide updates with regard to fan access to Aqueduct Racetrack as new information becomes available.

NYRA Releases Aqueduct’s Fall Stakes Schedule Worth $4.9 Million

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) today announced the stakes schedule for the 18-day fall meet at Aqueduct Racetrack that will include 26 total stakes, including 10 graded contests, which will run from Friday, November 5 through Sunday, December 5.

Offering total stakes purses of $4.9 million, the fall meet will be highlighted by a four graded-stakes card on Saturday, December 4, headlined by the Grade 1, $750,000 Cigar Mile Handicap for 3-year-olds and up.

The stacked Cigar Mile undercard will also include the Grade 2, $250,000 Remsen for juveniles going 1 1/8 miles with 10-4-2-1 qualifying points to the 2022 Grade 1 Kentucky Derby on the line. Its counterpart for 2-year-old fillies, the Grade 2, $250,000 Demoiselle, will offer 10-4-2-1 points towards the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks. Also on tap for the December 4 card is the Grade 3, $250,000 Go For Wand Handicap for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up competing at one mile.

The Big A fall meet stakes action begins on Opening Day, November 5, with the $150,000 Tempted for juvenile fillies going one mile and the $100,000 Atlantic Beach for 2-year-olds at six furlongs on the turf. Opening weekend at the Big A continues on Saturday, November 6, with the Grade 3, $150,000 Turnback the Alarm Handicap for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up at 1 1/8 miles and the $100,000 Stewart Manor for juvenile fillies at six furlongs on the grass. The Grade 3, $150,000 Nashua will bookend the Opening Weekend stakes offerings.

Following the $150,000 Artie Schiller and $150,000 Winter Memories on November 13-14, the Grade 2, $200,000 Red Smith highlights a strong weekend on November 20-21, which will include the $100,000 Key Cents and $100,000 Notebook on Sunday, November 21.

Thanksgiving weekend will offer ten stakes over three days beginning Friday, November 26 with the Grade 3, $200,000 Comely for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/8 miles; the $150,000 Gio Ponti for sophomores at 1 1/16 miles on the turf; and the $150,000 Forever Together for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up at 1 1/16 miles on the grass.

Four stakes will be contested on Saturday, November 21 including the Grade 3, $400,000 Long Island for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up in a marathon 1 1/2 miles on the turf; the $150,000 Aqueduct Turf Sprint Championship for 3-year-olds and up sprinting six furlongs; the $150,000 Discovery for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles on the main track; and the $100,000 Central Park for juveniles at 1 1/16 miles on the turf.

Thanksgiving weekend racing at the Big A will close with three stakes on Sunday, November 28, including the Grade 3, $200,000 Fall Highweight Handicap for 3-years-olds and up at six furlongs; the $150,000 Autumn Days for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up at six furlongs on the turf; and the $100,000 Tepin for juvenile fillies going 1 1/16 miles on the grass.

The Big A fall meet will conclude on Sunday, December 5 with a pair of $150,000 New York Stallion Stakes Series races going seven furlongs on the main track, with the Thunder Rumble for 3-year-olds and up and the Staten Island for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up.

The Aqueduct winter meet will commence on Thursday, December 9, with seven stakes carded through the end of the calendar year. The first stakes of the winter meet will be the $100,000 Garland of Roses for fillies and mares 3-and-up at six furlongs on Saturday, December 11.

The following Saturday will again showcase a pair of NYSSS contests with half-million dollar purses for juveniles competing at seven furlongs, with the $500,000 Great White Way for males and the Fifth Avenue for fillies.

The next day, Sunday, December 19, will offer the $125,000 Queens County for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles and the $100,000 Gravesend for 3-years-old and up sprinting six furlongs in the final stakes action before a 10-day holiday break.

Live racing will resume Thursday, December 30 with the $100,000 Bay Ridge for New York-bred fillies and mares 3-years-old and up at 1 1/8 miles. New Year's Eve will feature the $100,000 Alex M. Robb for state-bred 3-years-old and up at 1 1/8 miles.

Kantarmaci on Top Again in NYRA Claiming Challenge

Trainer Mertkan Kantarmaci won his fourth straight title in the New York Racing Association's “Under 20s Claiming Challenge” at the recently concluded winter/spring meet at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Launched in 2018, the challenge is open to local trainers with 20 or fewer horses nationwide. Kantarmaci topped the standings, racking up 133 points in the unique contest that highlighted horses' performances in winners' claiming races on the main track. Randi Persaud was second with 83 points, with Edward Barker [68] and A.C. Avila [65] rounding out the quartet who cracked the 60-point threshold.

The top eight trainers in the contest shared a prize pool of $80,000, with Kantarmaci earning the first-place prize of $16,000.

“It's a great feeling and to get a title like this racing in New York, I'm really delighted with that,” Kantarmaci said. “It shows we can have consistent success with the claiming horses, and most of them have improved from when they were claimed, and some of them have gone on to allowance races. I couldn't get points with those, but of course, I made money with them by moving them up.”

When the winter and spring meets are factored in, Kantarmaci compiled a 10-12-9 record with 74 starters, finishing in the money 41.89% of the time and winning at a 13.51% clip, with his horses earning $600,617.

“I think I'm one of the best claiming trainers in New York right now,” Kantarmaci said. “I've won a few at Aqueduct and one at Belmont. So, it shows we can do well at Belmont and at Aqueduct, which has a long winter meet. There aren't many young trainers in New York; just a few. It's hard to win that much with just claiming horses. But it's gotten people's attention and some owners have asked us if we're available to train their horses, so a claiming title like this in New York has been really helpful.”

The Under 20's Claiming Challenge continues into the current spring/summer meet at Belmont Park, which started Apr. 22 and runs through July 11. This contest encompasses both main track and turf contests.

Dylan Davis, Jorge Vargas On The Mend After Saturday’s Spill At Aqueduct

Jockeys Dylan Davis and Jorge Vargas, Jr. are on the road to recovery after being unseated from their mounts in Saturday's ninth race, a six-furlong maiden special weight sprint for New York-bred 3-year-old fillies at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Vargas, Jr. was unseated when his mount, Kiss Me Dave, fell entering the turn. Davis was unseated when Tellaperfecttale fell over Kiss Me Dave, while jockey Nik Juarez was unseated by Maybe I Know, who maneuvered to evade the spill.

Tellaperfecttale and Maybe I Know walked off the track under their own power. Kiss Me Dave, a bay daughter of Palace, collapsed and died on track, according to Dr. Anthony Verderosa, director of NYRA veterinarians.

Juarez was transported to first aid for evaluation and immediately cleared, while Davis and Vargas, Jr. were transported to local area hospital for further evaluation.

Davis, a 26-year-old native of Manhasset, New York, incurred a broken clavicle. He will have surgery on Monday and be out for a period of 6-to-8 weeks according to agent Mike Migliore.

Vargas, Jr. will need 4-to-6 weeks to recover from a lumbar fracture per agent Jimmy Riccio, Jr., who said the rider is pointing to a long-term goal of riding at the Monmouth Park summer meet.

Davis was in the midst of a strong Big A winter meet with 44 wins, good for fourth in the jockey standings, including stakes wins with Capo Kane [Jerome], Mrs. Orb [La Verdad] and Just Read It in Saturday's $100,000 Cicada.

Vargas, Jr., a 26-year-old native of Caguas, Puerto Rico, sits seventh in the jockey standings with 28 wins. He notched a pair of stakes wins at the Aqueduct winter meet with Pete's Play Call [Gravesend] and Bella Aurora [Interborough].
