Gun Runner Colt Breaks Through in Smarty Jones

Il Miracolo (c, 3, Gun RunnerTapit's World, by Tapit), a longshot second in Saratoga's Curlin S. July 21, broke through with a career high in Tuesday's GIII Smarty Jones S. at Parx.

Drawn widest of all in post eight, the 7-2 chance was hustled from his outside draw and raced three wide around the clubhouse turn. He sat a perfect, stalking trip from an outside third, made his move on the far turn, kicked for home as the one to catch, and, despite drifting out badly down the lane,  was never in any serious danger late. It was three lengths back to Cagliostro (Upstart) in second; Daydreaming Boy (Goldencents) was third.

A well-beaten sixth in both the GII Fountain of Youth S. Mar. 4 and GI Curlin Florida Derby Apr. 1, Il Miracolo followed an optional claiming win at Gulfstream Park May 11 with a seventh-place finish in the GI Belmont S. June 10. He finished 3 1/4 lengths behind the GI Travers S.-bound Scotland (Good Magic) in the Curlin.

Pedigree Notes:

Il Miracolo becomes the 14th graded/20th stakes winner for leading young sire Gun Runner. The Gun Runner over Tapit cross is also responsible for GISW Society and GSWs Wicked Halo, Red Route One and Disarm. The winner's dam Tapit's World, a $175,000 purchase by Willow Oaks Farm at the 2015 FTKNOV sale, is also responsible for the 2-year-old colt Mister Cruiser (Catalina Cruiser) and a Vekoma filly of this year. She was bred back to Vekoma for 2024.

Vino Rosso Colt Skips Home First at Saratoga

2nd-Saratoga, $105,000, Msw, 8-19, 2yo, 1m (off turf), 1:39.24, ft, 5 lengths.
DANCING GROOM (c, 2, Vino Rosso–Snow Dancer, by Bernardini) skipped clear down the lane to become the sixth winner for his freshman sire (by Curlin). A 9-2 shot in this off-turf stretch-out to a mile, the chestnut colt was hustled to keep pace with the early leaders, but was shuffled back to midpack down the backstretch. He rolled into contention with a three-wide move on the far turn, took charge at the top of the lane and strolled home a five-length winner. Houlton (American Pharoah) was second and Divine Empire (Classic Empire) was third. A well-beaten sixth in his six-furlong debut over the Saratoga main track July 22, Dancing Groom was a $37,000 KEESEP yearling and a $60,000 OBS March graduate. Snow Dancer produced a filly by Mo Town last year and was barren this year before being bred back to Enticed. The winner's third dam, Snowflake (Ire) (Caerleon), produced multiple graded winner Upperline (Maria's Mon). Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by FanDuel TV. Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-0, $58,380.

Il Miracolo Finalizes Belmont Prep At Gulfstream

Alexandres LLC's Il Miracolo (Gun Runner) breezed five furlongs at Gulfstream Park Friday morning in preparation for a scheduled start in next Saturday's GI Belmont Stakes.

He was timed in 1:00.88, the fastest clocking of four recorded at the distance. The Antonio Sano trainee is coming off a front-running score at Gulfstream in an optional claiming allowance at a mile May 11 in his first start since finishing sixth to 'TDN Rising Star' Forte in the GI Curlin Florida Derby.

“The horse wants distance and is doing really good, so we'll try,” Sano said.

Marcos Meneses will have the return mount aboard Il Miracolo who is scheduled to ship to Belmont Park Saturday.

Tapit Trice, Il Miracolo Work Towards Belmont

'TDN Rising Star' Tapit Trice (Tapit), a latest seventh to Mage (Good Magic) in the GI Kentucky Derby May 6, went five furlongs in 1:00.22 over a fast Belmont main track Friday morning in his penultimate work ahead of the GI Belmont S. at Big Sandy June 10. He galloped out three-quarters of a mile in a strong 1:12.60 and was up seven furlongs in 1:25.

“Super breeze, big gallop out,” trainer Todd Pletcher said following the work. “He seems to really like the main track here. I'm very, very happy with the way he's been training. He hasn't missed a beat since the Derby. He's settled in well. He's been galloping over the main track. He had a breeze last week [half-mile in :49.04 May 19] and a more serious breeze today. It was a major piece of work today, we'll come back for a maintenance- type breeze next week. We always thought the mile and a half would suit him.”

A win would make Tapit Trice the fifth son of Tapit to take the Belmont, adding to the previous successes of Tonalist (2014), Creator (2016), Tapwrit (2017) and Essential Quality (2021). Pletcher likes the colt's chances of seeing out the 12 furlongs.

“He's out of a Dunkirk (Unbridled's Song) mare who I trained and ran second [to Summer Bird] in the [2009] Belmont. From a pedigree standpoint, you would think he's capable,” Pletcher said. “He's got that big, long galloping stride. I think the main thing is making sure that he gets into that comfortable rhythm and doesn't give himself too much to do early on. The Belmont is not necessarily a closer's race, but it seems like he's really coming up to it the right way.”

Would-be Derby favorite and 'TDN Rising Star' Forte (Violence) and Kingsbarns (Uncle Mo) were scheduled to breeze Friday, but the former will now work Saturday morning at 8:45. Pletcher was unsure when Kingsbarns would return to the tab.

“He's got a little bit of a bellyache today, so we weren't able to breeze him,” Pletcher said of Kingsbarns.

At Gulfstream Park Friday morning, trainer Antonio Sano sent out Il Miracolo (Gun Runner) for a five-furlong move over a sloppy main track that was clocked in 1:01.06.

“He had a very good work. He leaves for Belmont next Saturday,” Sano said. “It's a very strong race and the horse is a little green right now, but I hope he can run well and run a strong race.”

Sixth and well-beaten behind Forte in the GII Fountain of Youth S. and again in the GI Curlin Florida Derby, Il Miracolo was the wire-to-wire winner of a one-mile allowance/optional claimer at Gulfstream May 11.
