Adayar Back In Style In The Gordon Richards

Waylaid for much of last year, Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) showed he is in a good place this Spring with a smooth winning return in the rescheduled G3 Gordon Richards S. very much a marker of his current wellbeing. Travelling strongly but always under William Buick's control tracking stablemate Highland Avenue (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the early stages of the 10-furlong staging post moved to Newmarket from Sandown, the 2021 Derby and King George hero moved to the front passing two out and forged ahead to score by 2 1/2 lengths from the penalised Anmaat (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}) who ousted Highland Avenue late by half a length.

“He'd been settled at home and they've done a great job with him over the winter,” Buick said of the 5-6 favourite. “He was perfect there and this is a lovely stepping stone race. The ground is hard work and tacky and you need to stay on it.” Charlie Appleby added, “You always like to see those good horses win with authority and William said he got tired in that ground so there is a nice bit of progression to come. I would imagine now it will be the Prince of Wales's, as Hurricane Lane is going to the Coronation Cup now he is back on track. It was always the aim in the first half of the year to go for a group 1 over a mile and a quarter with Adayar.”

Pedigree Notes
Adayar's dam, the G3 Prix de la Grotte winner and G1 Irish 1000 Guineas runner-up Anna Salai (Dubawi {Ire}), is also responsible for the stable's dual winner Military Order (Ire) by Frankel who currently sits near the top of the Derby market. The second dam is the G3 Prix d'Aumale winner Anna Palariva (Ire) (Caerleon), who produced three other black-type performers and also the dam of the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere-winning sire National Defense (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).

Anna Palariva is the leading performer for the G3 Park Hill S. winner Anna Of Saxony (GB) (Ela-Mana-Mou {Ire}), whose descendants include the GI Flower Bowl Invitational heroine Ave (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and the G2 Diana-Trial heroine Amazing Grace (Ger) (Protectionist {Ger}). They descend from the G2 Preis der Diana-winning champion and blue hen Anna Paola (Ger) (Prince Ippi {Ger}), also the ancestress of the sires Epaulette (Aus) and Helmet (Aus). Anna Salai's 2-year-old filly is by Exceed And Excel (Aus).

Burrows Update On Return Of Shadwell Talent

Shadwell's Anmaat (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}), winner of the G2 Prix Dollar at ParisLongchamp last out on Oct. 1, is due to make his first start of his 5-year-old campaign soon, trainer Owen Burrows confirmed on Wednesday.

“He's good, he's in strong work. I've made an entry for him in the [G1] Tattersalls Gold Cup and he'll also have an entry for those two group races in France–the [G1 Prix] Ganay and the [G1] Prix d'Ispahan. One is at the end of April and one's at the end of May.”

The gelding began last year with a half-length success in the John Smith's Cup on July 9 at York and then landed a win in the G3 Betfred Rose Of Lancaster S. by four lengths at Haydock on Aug. 6.

Burrows went on to say, “You've got Group 3s at Sandown–Gordon Richards and the Brigadier Gerard–but he'd have a Group 2 penalty in those, so I think if we're happy and he's showing all the right signs at home, then why not have a crack?”

As for other members of the Shadwell lineup in his care, plans for the return of Hukum (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who won the G1 Coronation Cup over Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) last June, are also under advisement. A hind leg injury ended the full-brother to Baaeed (GB)'s year, but after a successful operation, he began the rehabilitation process. A bid later this year for the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe could be feasible.

“I was speaking to Angus [Gold, Shadwell racing manager] about a month ago about whether we'd be brave enough to go back to Epsom first time out, but we're probably not,” said Burrows.

“We'll probably have a prep run somewhere in May, with a view to the main target being the [G2] Hardwicke S. at Royal Ascot and then the races are all pretty mapped out for him. The good thing with him is that he's shown a preference for going on soft ground, so it's lovely to think he'd be turning up in France in October. He's rehabbed well and Sheikha Hissa was quite keen to give him another chance.”

Burrows also provided an update on Alflaila (GB) Dark Angel {Ire}), who scored a trio of listed and Group 3 victories at the end of last season before sustaining a fracture to his left fetlock. That ruled him out for a Bahrain run in November, but he is making strides with his recovery and is expected back soon.

“Alflaila is still back at Shadwell, I had an update a few weeks ago and he was back cantering,” he said. “I'm hoping he'll be back with me next week or the week after at the latest.”

Awtaad’s Anmaat Wins Dollar War

Sent off the 5-2 favourite for Saturday's G2 Qatar Prix Dollar at ParisLongchamp, Shadwell's Anmaat (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}) justified that confidence to prevail in a battle with Junko (GB) (Intello {Ger}) in the 10-furlong contest. Brought along steadily by Owen Burrows last term and this, the 4-year-old had sprung to prominence last time when taking Haydock's G3 Rose of Lancaster S. by four lengths Aug. 6 and after taking cover in mid-pack looked the winner in early straight with Jim Crowley motionless. Sent to the front a furlong out, the bay had Junko immediately on his case and while it looked briefly as if that Wertheimer representative had the momentum it was Anmaat who had his head down where it mattered. A head was the winning margin, with four lengths back to TDN Rising Star West Wind Blows (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) in third.
