John Gosden Earns Third Straight Champion Trainer Title

John Gosden was on Monday named Britain's champion flat trainer for the third year running and fifth time overall. Gosden's runners earned £3,114,226 (US$3.8 million) on the racecourse in 2020, more than £650,000 (US$793,500) ahead of Aidan O'Brien.

Gosden's stable took home seven Group 1 trophies this year, including a third win in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. for Enable (Nathaniel) and for Stradivarius (Sea The Stars) in the G1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot.

“I would like to thank all of my staff for all of their endeavors in this most difficult of years,” Gosden told Great British Racing. “My thanks to our owners, who have been so supportive, and to the whole racing industry for pulling together so effectively.”

Sheikh Hamdan was named champion owner, his flagbearers including the Gosden-trained G1 Falmouth S. and G1 Sun Chariot S. scorer Nazeef (Invincible Spirit), G1 King's Stand S. and G1 Nunthorpe S. winner Battaash (Dark Angel) and G1 Sussex S. scorer Mohaather (Showcasing). Sheikh Hamdan's prizemoney total in 2020 was £2,309,194 (US$2.8 million) from 112 wins.

Sheikh Hamdan's racing manager Angus Gold said: “To win the champion owner title is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved, it's what we all work hard for and strive to achieve. It's been a difficult year for everyone, but we have been blessed on the track this year with some amazing horses. While it was sad for Sheikh Hamdan not being able to come over to the likes of Royal Ascot to see them in the flesh, he is incredibly enthusiastic, and winning the champion owner title means the world to him and all the team.”

Ben Curtis took the 2020 annual flat jockeys' title with 170 wins. Curtis won a pair of Group 3s in June before a career high with Dandalla (Dandy Man) in the G3 Albany S. at Royal Ascot, on whom he also won the G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. the following month.

“Given the lockdown in March, I set out to pass the 100 winners mark, so to have surpassed that along with the many other talented jockeys in the weighing room at the moment, such as Hollie [Doyle] and Tom [Marquand], is a great achievement,” he said. “For us to have reached those figures, all things considered, is fantastic for British racing.”

Enbihaar Retired After Sustaining a Minor Injury

MGSW & G1SP Enbihaar (Ire) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}– Chanterelle {Fr}, by Trempolino) has been retired due to injury, Shadwell’s Racing Manager Angus Gold announced on Tuesday. The John Gosden trainee and 2019 English Highweighted Older Mare at 14 furlongs and above was pointing for this weekend’s G1 Qatar Prix de Royallieu.

“Enbihaar will miss the Royallieu as she is currently at Shadwell Stud,” said Gold of the €500,000 Arqana August yearling. “She had a minor injury, and as a result has been retired–very sadly. She’s been an absolute star, and I wish we had a few more like her–with her enthusiasm and ability.

“It was sad not to win a Group One. But she did very well to win what she did, and she was a real torch-bearer for us for the last few years. She was beautifully trained–I must say that. It’s very sad, but it was fantastic to keep her in training this year to win a couple more group races. She’s given us a lot of fun, and obviously we’ll give her a proper chance at stud.”

A winner of the G2 Lancashire Oaks, G2 Lillie Langtry S. and Doncaster’s G2 Park Hill S. as a sophomore, the Haras du Mezeray-bred ran third in the 2019 Prix de Royallieu. A rare returning 4-year-old in these colours, she duplicated a victory in the Lillie Langtry S. and, in her final start, won York’s G2 Lonsdale Cup on Aug. 21. She retires with a mark of 12-7-1-2 and $636,973 in earnings.

Her dam is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Amonita (GB) (Anabaa), and a full to MGSW Cox Orange (Trempolino), herself the dam of G1 1000 Guineas third Vista Bella (GB) (Diktat {GB}). Besides Enbhihaar, Chanterelle has also thrown GSP Silent Attack (GB) (Dream Ahead) and SP King Bolete (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}).

Mohaather Retired From Racing

Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}-Roodeye {GB}, by Inchinor {GB}), a group winner at two, three and four who earned his first Group 1 victory last out in the Sussex S., has been retired to stud due to bone bruising in his near hind fetlock joint.

“Towards the end of last week it was noticed that Mohaather was not moving as well as he had been immediately after the Sussex S.,” said Angus Gold, racing manager to owner Sheikh Hamdan. “Precautionary x-rays were taken over the weekend which have revealed significant bone bruising in his near hind fetlock joint. Unfortunately this will put paid to the rest of his campaign, and as a result Sheikh Hamdan has taken the decision to retire the colt to stud.

“Mohaather won group races as a 2-, 3- and 4-year-old and reserved his best effort for his last outing, where he beat the winners of this year’s English and Irish 2000 Guineas, together with dual Group 1 Royal Ascot winner Circus Maximus, quickening from an impossible position inside the last two furlongs in the manner of a top-class miler. While it is sad that he will not get the chance to take on the best of the milers in the Queen Elizabeth II at Ascot and the Breeders’ Cup at the end of this year, he retires at the top of his game, and on behalf of HH Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum I would like to thank Marcus Tregoning and his team for the outstanding job they did with him.”

Bred by Gaie Johnson Houghton, Mohaather was bought by Shadwell for 110,000gns during Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2017. Sent to Marcus Tregoning, he was spotted three times at two, winning twice including the G3 Horris Hill S. He showed promise on debut at three with a victory in the G3 Greenham S., but was not seen again until running fifth in the Queen Elizabeth II S. on Champions Day. Seventh behind Circus Maximus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Queen Anne S. at Royal Ascot first up this year, he then took the G2 Summer Mile by 3 3/4 lengths prior to the Sussex.

Mohaather is a full-brother to Prize Exhibit (GB), winner of four graded stakes in the U.S., and is a half to the dam of Johnson Houghton’s G1 Queen Anne S. winner Accidental Agent (GB) (Delegator {GB}).

A Glorious Send-Off

Goodwood’s Qatar Festival has lived up to its “Glorious” tag all week and Saturday sees the culmination with the G2 Qatar Lillie Langtry S. the key race for the staying fillies and mares. Despite there being only four participants, they are all notable performers in the category and last year’s winner Enbihaar (Ire) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}) will have to be at or near her best to bring up the repeat. Twelve months ago, the Shadwell representative gave a stone and a five-length beating to Manuela de Vega (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), defying the anchor of a combination of weight-for-age and a penalty here prior to adding Doncaster’s G2 Park Hill S. to her tally. Perhaps undone by testing ground when third in the G1 Prix de Royallieu at ParisLongchamp and fourth in the 12-furlong G2 Princess of Wales’s S. on her seasonal bow at Newmarket July 9, she has ideal conditions again here.

Shadwell’s racing manager Angus Gold is looking for improvement from her comeback effort.

“I thought she stayed on well in the last part of the race at Newmarket,” he explained. “It was her first run of the year, the trip was a bit short and the ground was soft enough for her as well. Hopefully, the ground will be on the quick side on Saturday, which will certainly help her. She is showing incredible enthusiasm and has this extraordinary action. You can never take anything for granted, but I would hope she’ll put her best foot forward.”

Since her heavy defeat in this last year, Manuela de Vega has come back at four a different proposition but had soft ground to suit when taking Haydock’s G3 Pinnacle S. June 7 and G2 Lancashire Oaks July 5 over a mile and a half. She gets the three-pound penalty as a result this time, which makes it all the harder for her to deal with Enbihaar but trainer Ralph Beckett is willing to give it a go.

“She’s in very good shape and we’re hoping she can go one better than last year,” he said. “We think she’s pretty adaptable ground-wise–I don’t think it makes too much difference to her. It won’t be easy giving the penalty away, but it’s feasible.”

Aside from that duo, the 3-year-olds Snow (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Cabaletta (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) are worthy of respect with the former coming in on the back of a fifth in the G1 Irish Oaks at The Curragh a fortnight ago and Cheveley Park Stud’s TDN Rising Star Cabaletta also backing up quickly having won Newbury’s Listed Aphrodite S. over a mile and a half on the same day.

Deauville ramps up the action as the August Festival gets underway in earnest, with the G3 Prix Six Perfections Sky Sports Racing and G3 Prix de Psyche Sky Sports Racing enjoying a share of the focus. In the former for 2-year-old fillies, Sean Mulryan, Linda Shanahan and Susan Magnier’s unbeaten See The Rose (Ire) (Kendargent {Fr}) returns to the scene of her smooth six-furlong conditions success July 12. She has to deal with Godolphin’s Wedding Dance (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), a member of Charlie Appleby’s academy which always does well here and she impressed with a 3 1/4-length success in a Newmarket maiden over this seven-furlong trip July 11.

“We were very pleased with Wedding Dance last time out, when she won nicely and she came out of the race well. This looks a nice opportunity for her to step up in grade,” her trainer said.

In the Psyche over a mile and a quarter, Shadwell’s Raabihah (Sea the Stars {Ire}) will be a warm order, having finished a short neck and two head margins behind the subsequent G1 Nassau S. winner Fancy Blue (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) when fourth in the G1 Prix de Diane over 10 1/2 furlongs at Chantilly July 5. Again, Godolphin are at the fore with the Andre Fabre-trained Alkandora (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), who took ParisLongchamp’s Listed Prix Melisande also over 10 1/2 furlongs last time July 2.

“Alkandora is in good form and has done really well since her last race,” Godolphin’s Lisa-Jane Graffard said. “She will appreciate a step up in trip in time, but Andre is very happy with her condition and she deserves a try at this level.”

Also in the mix is Tweenhills Fillies and Meridian International’s impressive June 7 Listed Pretty Polly Fillies’ S. winner Run Wild (Ger) (Amaron {GB}), who will be more at home back at that trip having finished last in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot June 20.
