Darby Dan’s Klimt Has First Winner After 5 1/2-Length Score By Loveherheart

Loveherheart ran her rivals off their feet in a Santa Anita maiden special weight on Friday, becoming the first winner for Darby Dan Farm's freshman sire Klimt.

Ridden by Juan Hernandez, Loveherheart took command at the start of the five-furlong event. She widened her advantage throughout, romping to a 5 ½-length score for owners Alydom Racing, Rudy Barragan, Ross Lerner, and Craig and Ellie Russell, and trainer Andrew Lerner.

The bay filly, who is produced from the Yonaguska mare Lustful, was bred in Kentucky by Lee McMillin and Anita Cauley. She was a $50,000 graduate of this year's OBS March sale where she was bought by Nick Hines, agent.

Klimt was a top 2-year-old of 2016. Named a TDN Rising Star, he captured the Best Pal Stakes (G2) by 2 ¾ lengths in just his third career start, before rolling to a dominant 4 ½- length victory in the Del Mar Futurity (G1), where he ran seven furlongs in 1:21.80. By Quality Road, Klimt is out of the stakes-placed Dixie Union mare Inventive and hails from the immediate family of Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner Concern.

Graded Stakes Winner Multiplier Euthanized After Injuries Sustained In Tokyo City Cup

A Grade 3 winner with graded stakes placings on both dirt and turf, 7-year-old Multiplier had to be euthanized Monday due to injuries he sustained in the Sunday's G3 Tokyo City Cup at Santa Anita Park. According to the LA Times, the son of The Factor was at the rear of the five-horse field when appearing to struggle around the far turn, and was pulled up by jockey Ruben Fuentes. Diagnostics showed fractures in his right front ankle, which were later revealed to be worse than originally thought.

Multiplier's biggest win came for Brendan Walsh in the G3 Illinois Derby in 2017. After running off the board in both the Preakness and Belmont Stakes, Multiplier was moved to the West Coast with trainer Peter Miller. He finished third in the G2 Del Mar Handicap (turf) in 2018 and second in the G1 Santa Anita Handicap (dirt) in 2020.

Dropped in for a $50,000 tag in February of 2021, Multiplier was claimed by trainer Andrew Lerner on behalf of Biggleague Racing, LLC. The Tokyo City Cup was the gelding's third start off the claim.

Overall, Multiplier ran out a record of 4-6-4 from 37 career starts, earning just shy of $600,000 on the track.

Multiplier is the eighth racing or training death at Santa Anita since the racing season began Dec. 26, and the third during racing on the dirt course.

Newlywed Lerner Says Uncle Boogie Not In Sham Stakes ‘Just To Fill The Race’

Andrew Lerner didn't go on a honeymoon after he got married last Sunday. The 31-year-old trainer will celebrate later, but he could get an early start if longshot Uncle Boogie wins Saturday's Grade 3 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

It will take some doing, however. Uncle Boogie, at 12-1 on Jon White's morning line, is the longest shot in the one-mile Kentucky Derby prep. He faces two promising colts trained by John Shirreffs and two by Bob Baffert, including 2-5 morning line favorite Life Is Good, already earmarked for the Hall of Fame in the opinion of some insiders, although he has had only one race.

Lerner and his bride, Katie, will have a “mini-honeymoon” at Cabo San Lucas in a couple weeks, since training requires a 24/7 commitment and “it's really tough to get away,” Lerner noted.

“Uncle Boogie is a longshot, but he's done nothing wrong so far and he definitely deserves a chance. He broke his maiden first out (by 6 ¼ lengths in a $32,000 claimer at Santa Anita last Oct. 12), then ran two seconds. He had trouble at the start in the (G3) Bob Hope and was too far back … so we're not in the Sham just to fill the race.”

Uncle Boogie is owned by Eric Homme, who “got into the game two years ago taking fractional percentages of horses. Uncle Boogie is the first horse he owns solely,” Lerner said.

Lerner already has had one winner this meet but it came while he was getting married, so he didn't have a chance to enjoy it. Octopus, of which Lerner owns a share along with Alydom Racing LLC, won Sunday's sixth race by a length and a quarter as the 4-5 favorite under Joel Rosario.

“I didn't get to watch it,” Lerner said, “My best man was giving his speech but my Dad (Ross) was behind him watching it on his phone simultaneously, and no one knew. But he gave me a signal that we won, so I knew what was going on.

“I was under the chuppah at the time but we were in the reception area kind of doing dinner and speeches with the best man and the bridesmaids. I didn't have my phone. I lost my phone privileges for the day, but my Dad came through like he always does.”

The field for the Sham, race eight of nine with a 12:30 p.m. first post time: Medina Spirit, Abel Cedillo, 6-1; Waspirant, Umberto Rispoli, 15-1; Parnelli, Drayden Van Dyke, 5-2; Uncle Boogie, Flavien Prat, 12-1; and Life Is Good, Mike Smith, 2-5.

Wedding Vows, Sham Stakes Highlight Busy Week For Lerner

Andrew Lerner is looking forward to next Saturday when he runs Uncle Boogie in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif., but he has greater anticipation at stake on Sunday. The 31-year-old trainer is getting married to his long-time love, Katie.

“We've been together for seven years and we were going to get married in June,” Lerner said Saturday morning after working Uncle Boogie four furlongs under Flavian Prat, who rides the Florida-bred son of the Curlin sire Ride the Curlin in the $100,000 Sham for 3-year-olds at one mile.

“We expected to have a bigger wedding with about 200 people back then but the venue in Malibu called us and said if we want it with dancing and no masks, no social distancing, we're going to have to wait until 2022.

“We didn't want to do that so we decided on Dec. 27 which is tomorrow with just immediate family, so it will be a small wedding with about 19 people.”

Meanwhile, back on the track, Uncle Boogie breezed this morning “and Flavien liked his work,” Lerner said. “The horse went well in company sitting outside Miss Glorious. I got him in 48 and change and he galloped out nicely. Provided he comes out of the work good we plan to run.”

Otherwise, Lerner is “trying to reload for the upcoming meet with some incoming two-year-olds coming and recycling our stock a bit.”

Uncle Boogie won his debut race, a $32,000 maiden claimer on Oct. 12 at Santa Anita, by 6 ¼ lengths, and was second in his last two including the G3 Bob Hope going seven furlongs at Del Mar on Nov. 15.

His running style indicates he should like the added distances of the Sham, a starting point on the Triple Crown trail which offers 10 Kentucky Derby qualifying points to the winner, four to the runner-up, two to the third-place finisher, and one to the fourth.

The colt is owned by Eric Homme, “a good owner and a really nice guy,” Lerner said. “He got into the game two years ago taking fractional percentages of horses. Uncle Boogie is the first horse he owns solely.”

Seems like congratulations are in order all around.
