All Systems Go For Chaldean In Guineas

Group 1 winner Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who races for Juddmonte, is reportedly in good order ahead of a start in the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas on Saturday, according to trainer Andrew Balding.

The colt, who dislodged Frankie Dettori at the start of the G3 Craven S. before completing a circuit of the course, worked “extremely well” on Saturday, Balding noted.

“We will only know on Saturday what we missed out on at Newbury and the benefits of having a run as obviously it would have been far more of a benefit for him to have had a jockey on board and have a proper race,” he said.

“At the same time, it wasn't totally lost as he had to go through the preliminary tests of saddling, walking around the paddock and cantering down to the start, which are the extras that go with a run and not just a gallop at home. Thankfully he didn't go and do another circuit loose. He was fairly sensible.

“I couldn't be happier with him at the moment and Frankie rode him on Saturday and he worked extremely well. It was a very solid piece and his fitness levels are as good as we could hope for in the circumstances.”

Chaldean won the G3 Acomb S., G2 Champagne S., and G1 Dewhurst S. in succession as a juvenile. The Craven was his 3-year-old bow. Dettori, who has won the Guineas three times, will be aboard on Saturday, and the duo face a stiff challenge, especially from Ireland, in the form of the Coolmore partners' Group 1 winners Little Big Bear (Ire) (No Nay Never) and Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).

Freshman Sire Phoenix Of Spain Off The Mark At Leicester

Irish National Stud resident Phoenix Of Spain (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) became Europe's latest first-crop sire to get off the mark when Spanish Phoenix (Ire) (Phoenix Of Spain {Ire}–Freedom March {GB}, by Oasis Dream {GB}) graduated at the second time of asking in Saturday's £8,000 Atlantic Pale Ale Maiden S. over five furlongs at Leicester.

The even-money favourite, who ran fourth in his Apr. 10 debut at Kempton, raced on the front end after a slick getaway and extended clear under mild urging once shaken up approaching the final furlong to easily outpoint Too Much Trevor (GB) (Magna Grecia {Ire}) by 6 1/2 lengths.

Spanish Phoenix, half-brother to a yearling filly by Ribchester (Ire) from the family of MG1SW distaffer Pride (Fr) (Peintre Celebre), is the second foal and scorer produced by a winning half-sister to the dual Group 3-placed Bell Rock (GB) (Kingman {GB}). The February-foaled bay's GSP second dam Literally (Ire) (Statue Of Liberty) is kin to three black-type winners, headed by G1 1000 Guineas heroine Speciosa (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), and to the dam of G1 Prix Marcel Boussac vixtrix Zellie (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}).

Noble Style Set For Mouthwatering Greenham Clash With Chaldean

A mouthwatering early-season clash could be on between G1 2000 Guineas hopefuls Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Noble Style (GB) (Kingman {GB}) after Charlie Appleby confirmed the latter to be on course for the G3 Greenham S. at Newbury in April.

Andrew Balding had already told TDN Europe that Chaldean, the highest-rated juvenile in Britain last season, would run in next month's Greenham en route to Newmarket.

Noble Style, impressive in the G2 Gimcrack S. last year, will tackle seven furlongs for the first time at Newbury with Appleby keen to test the water over that trip before the Guineas.

Appleby said, “He has done well from two to three and the plan is to go for the Greenham, because I didn't want to step him up from six furlongs to a mile in the Craven.

“The seven and how he gets on will give me an indication of what we are going to be doing, whether that is dropping back to six for the Commonwealth Cup or going forward in distance to the Guineas.”

The trainer added, “He was very impressive in the Gimcrack when he gave the impression there's a lot of speed in that family. His maiden at Ascot is also very strong form, and he's delighted me through the winter.”

“I have a few to run in the trials, and while there is no standout individual they have all done well and will not look out of place physically. Others will run in maidens and let's see what transpires.”

Chaldean is a general 8-1 chance for Guineas glory while Noble Style can be backed at odds of 10-1.
