German Derby Hero Laccario Retired to Haras d’Annebault

German champion Laccario (Ger) (Scalo {GB}–Laccata {GB}, by Lomitas {GB}) will retire to Haras d'Annebault as a dual-purpose stallion in 2022, Galopponline.de reported. A winner of the 2019 G1 Deutsches Derby for Manfred Ostermann who also bred the 5-year-old under his Gestut Hof Ittlingen banner, Laccario's fee will be €3,000. The deal was brokered by Richard Venn.

A winner at second asking at Cologne at three, the Andreas Wohler trainee took the Listed Aengevelt Derby-Trial in May of 2019 and followed up in the G2 Sparkasse Union-Rennen a month later. The colt ran out a 1 1/4-length winner of the German Derby that July and returned to take third in the Sept. 1 G1 Grosser Preis von Baden. Second in the G3 Preis der Deutschen Einheit at Hoppegarten that October, the bay was given almost a year on the sidelines. Unplaced in the 2020 G1 Preis von Europa, he traveled Stateside and ran second in the GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic S. that October and filled the same position in the GII Hollywood Turf Cup S. in his final start on Nov. 27. Originally transferred from Wohler to Graham Motion for another U.S. campaign, he returned to Germany in July for stallion duties after a tendon injury. His record stands at 10-4-4-1, and $634,228 in earnings.

Laccario, whose second dam was G2 German Oaks second La Donna (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}), will be available to view during the “Route des Etalons” in January. La Donna is a half-sister to German Derby winners Lando (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}) and Laroche (Ger) (Nebos {Ger}).

Lord of England’s Palmas Routs German Oaks Rivals

Gestut Etzean's unbeaten 3-year-old filly Palmas (Ger) (Lord of England {Ger}) posted a half-length success in her May 16 debut going one mile at Hannover and doubled her tally when upped to 10 1/2 furlongs for Dusseldorf's June 19 Listed Diana-Trial in her only other start. Sent postward as the 9-2 second favourite back over the same strip for Sunday's 163rd Henkel Preis der Diana – German Oaks, she simply outclassed her rivals to win by daylight for a career high. The homebred bay maintained a rail berth through the early fractions and lobbed along in fourth until improving one spot at halfway. Shaken up to force an opening for her challenge passing the quarter-mile marker, Palmas was soon in command and lengthened clear in impressive fashion to hit the line six lengths ahead of G2 Derby Italiano fourth Isfahani (Ger) (Isfahan {Ger}). Last term's G3 Preis der Winterkonigin victrix Noble Heidi (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) was a length adrift in third.

“This is really overwhelming and I really do not know what to say,” said Gestut Etzean owner Marc Sonnenburg. “We are just so thankful for her.” Etzean manager Ralf Kredel added, “That was a really great performance considering it was only her third outing. She is her dam's last and best foal and this was the fourth Group 1 German Oaks victory for Gestut Etzean in the past 11 years.”

Palmas become the third Classic and Group 1 winner for her sire (by Dashing Blade {GB}), who is also the grandsire of this year's G1 Deutsches Derby hero Sisfahan (Ger) (Isfahan {Ger}). She is her dam's latest foal and one of four black-type winners for the stakes-placed Peace Time (Ger) (Surumu {Ger}). Siblings include her Listed Prix des Sablonnets-winning full-sister Penny Lane (Ger) and G3 Fahrhofer Stutenpreis victrix Peaceful Love (Ger) (Dashing Blade {GB}). Palmas is also kin to MGSW distaffer Peace Royale (Ger) (Sholokhov {Ire}) and to the multiple-winning dam of last year's Listed Winterkonigin Trial winner Peaches (Ger) (Lord of England {Ger}). Peaceful Love produced last term's G3 Prix La Force victor Pao Alto (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) and Peace Royale is the dam of GSW G2 German 1000 Guineas second Peace In Motion (Hat Trick {Jpn}) and two-time stakes scorer Peace Society (Iffraaj {GB}). Peace Time, who is the leading performer for the stakes-placed Princess of Spain (GB) (King of Spain {GB}), hails from the family of Scandinavian champion Dalby Jaguar (GB) (Sharp Edge {Ire}).

Del Mar’s Hollywood Turf Cup Could Have East Coast Flavor

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club racing secretary David Jerkens reports there is serious interest from several eastern trainers with likely runners for Del Mar's Grade 2 Hollywood Turf Cup scheduled for Friday, Nov. 27. The $200,000 race will be contested at a mile and one-half on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course.

Trainer Brad Cox has indicated his multiple-stakes winner Arklow, most recently seen running sixth in the G1 Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland, might be on board for the marathon. Trainer Mike Maker is considering two of his route runners in Big Agenda and Aquaphobia. The latter was a Grade 1 winner on the grass this year.

Also possible for the seventh local edition of the stakes is the German stakes winner Laccario for trainer Andreas Wohler, as well as trainer Graham Motion's Ziyad, a European import who ran third in the G3 Sycamore Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 15 in his initial U.S. start.

The Hollywood Turf Cup will be part of a seven-stakes-all-on-the-grass bonanza that starts on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 26) and runs through the track's closing afternoon on Sunday, Nov. 29.
