Cologne Poised For Winterfavoriten

Germany gets ready to crown its leading 2-year-old on Sunday, with Cologne's G3 Preis des Winterfavoriten aiming to do exactly that; to unveil the ante-post Deutsches Derby favourite to keep the purists warm during the cold months. Sarah Steinberg saddles Liberty Racing 2021's exciting Fantastic Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}), who starred on debut over seven furlongs at Munich Sept. 12, while Gestut Ebbesloh's Peter Schiergen-trained Arcandi (Ger) (Zarak {Fr}) shares a similar profile having scored on debut at this mile trip at Hoppegarten Sept. 16. Cometica AG's See Paris (Ger) (Counterattack {Aus}) found only TDN Rising Star Habana (Ger) (Kingman {GB}) too strong in the seven-furlong G3 Zukunfts-Rennen at Baden-Baden at the end of August and the full-brother to this year's G3 Premio Parioli (Italian 2000 Guineas) winner See Hector (Ger) may have a speed edge on his rivals.

Kingman’s 50th Stakes Winner As Habana Strikes At Baden-Baden

Labelled a TDN Rising Star following her emphatic winning debut over 6 1/2 furlongs at Cologne July 10, Gestut Fahrhof's homebred Habana (Ger) (Kingman {GB}) justified all the hype with an impressive follow-up in Wednesday's G3 149th Renate & Albrecht Woeste Zukunfts-Rennen at Baden-Baden. Held up in last early by a confident Eduardo Pedroza, the Andreas Wohler-trained 8-5 favourite was unleashed turning for home and her sustained effort saw her take command passing the furlong pole en route to a two-length success from See Paris (Ger) (Counterattack {Aus}).

Habana, who holds an entry in the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac, becomes the 50th stakes winner for her sire and is the second foal out of the G3 Premio Primi Passi heroine Hargeisa (Speightstown), whose dam is the Omnibus S. winner Hasay (GB) (Lomitas {GB}) who is in turn out of the Listed Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage winner and GIII Matchmaker S. runner-up Saralea (Fr) (Sillery). From the family of the Hong Kong Gold Cup hero Deauville (Fr) (Groom Dancer), Hargeisa also has the promising 3-year-old colt by Frankel (GB) named Huancayo (Ger) and a filly foal by Pinatubo (Ire).

Diana Glory For Shamalgan’s Toskana Belle

There was an upset in Sunday's G1 Henkel Preis der Diana at Dusseldorf as Kerrin McEvoy steered the 16-1 shot Toskana Belle (Fr) (Shamalgan {Fr}) to an all-the-way win for Australian Bloodstock Stable. Successful in the Listed Henkel-Stutenpreis over a mile here May 14, the chestnut had joined Andreas Wohler from the Marian Falk Weissmeier stable following her latest third in the 10-furlong G3 Diana Trial at Hoppegarten June 5. Always comfortable setting moderate fractions on the front end at this sharp turning circuit, she was tackled late by Wagnis (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) but held on to prevail by a head, with Mylady (Ger) (The Grey Gatsby {Ire}) 3/4 of a length away in third. Toy (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the 29-10 favourite, blew the first turn and failed to figure thereafter, ending up seventh.

Kingman’s Habana Impresses For TDN Rising Star Tag In Germany

Led out unsold at 140,000gns when attending last year's Tattersalls October Book 1 fixture, Gestut Fahrhof's hitherto untried homebred 2-year-old filly Habana (Ger) (Kingman {GB}–Hargeisa {GSW-Ity, MGSP-Fr & GSP-Ger}, by Speightstown) instead illuminated Cologne's Weidenpescher venue with a scintillating performance over 6 1/2 furlongs in Sunday's HSBS Catering Maiden Preis. Her year-older half-brother Huancayo (Ger) (Frankel {GB}) had provided a telling clue with a three-length debut triumph at Hannover just two days before. Habana was the lone filly in a field of five and was under a firm hold behind all four rivals through the early strides before tanking forward at halfway. Powering to the fore hard on the steel with 350 metres remaining, the well-backed 13-10 favourite settled the contest in an instant when quickening clear passing the furlong marker and accelerated again before gearing down to easily outclass Muhalif (Ger) (Lawman {Fr}) by an impressive 4 3/4 lengths.

“I actually wanted to wait a bit longer before committing and, if anything, we were in front a bit too soon, but she did that very well indeed,” said winning jockey Eddy Pedroza. Habana holds an eyecatching entry in Baden-Baden's G3 Zukunftsrennen, over seven furlongs at the end of August, and connections will take time to ponder options according to Gestut Fahrhof's Simon Stokes, who added, “We already have a high opinion of her and we're now going to discuss plans on how to proceed in a considered manner.”

Habana is the second of three foals produced by G3 Premio Primi Passi victrix Hargeisa (Speightstown), herself the leading representative of Listed Omnibus S. winner Hasay (GB) (Lomitas {GB}). Hasay, in turn, is the leading performer out of Listed Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage victrix and GIII Matchmaker S. runner-up Saralea (Fr) (Sillery), herself a half-sister to the stakes-winning trio Deauville (Fr) (Groom Dancer), La Kaldoun (Fr) (Kaldoun {Fr}) and Solidoun (Fr) (Kaldoun {Fr}). Saralea is also kin to the dam of G3 Prix de la Jonchere-winning sire Kaldou Star (GB) (Kaldoun {Fr}) (Caro {Ire}). Hargeisa has a weanling filly by Pinatubo (Ire) to come.
